The movie is also known as "Krakatoa: Volcano of Destruction" and aired on Discovery Channel. The movie brings to life the journals and recollections of four witnesses who survived the cataclysmic eruption of Krakatoa in August of 1883. This segment features the Beijerinck (Beyerinck) family in the village of Ketimbang, Sumatra. Controller Willem Beijerinck was one of seven assigned to oversee the growth and development of the Dutch colonies. Krakatoa had been building up activity, sending forth little explosions and a column of smoke from May to July. Many viewed this phenomenon as spectacular yet harmless. But to a few, such as Johanna Beijerinck, Willem's wife, this was an ominous sign of terrible things to come. This is her account from her journal. On August 26, 1883, Krakatoa entered into its paroxysmal phase, with eruptions on a virtually continuous basis and explosions heard every 10 minutes. A black cloud of ash arose from its depths to 17 miles (27km) high. The combined result of such heavy volcanic activity birthed the first of the tsunami that would destroy the coastal villages surrounding the volcano. On 27th August 1883 the uninhabited island of Krakatoa blew itself out of existence with an explosion the equivalent power of 150 million tonnes of TNT. The eruption was so loud that the sound was heard over a twelfth of the Earth’s surface, the shockwaves reverberated around the entire planet, seven times. This explosion also caused giant tsunami, the largest of them twice the height of those of 2004. These enormous waves wiped out 165 Indonesian towns and villages killing over 36,000 people. Within hours news of the disaster was transmitted around the globe, and scientists of the time struggled to comprehend the geological forces that caused the tragedy. Indonesia has so many volcanoes and earthquakes because of its geographical position. The archipelago that starts in Northern Sumatra stretches over 3,000 miles south. It has been created by the forces where two of the tectonic plates that make up the Earth’s surface, meet. The ocean floor of the Indo-Australian Plate and the Asian landmass of the Burma Plate are in collision. As they push against each other the heavier ocean floor is forced underneath the lighter continental rock. Krakatoa lies directly above this subduction zone. This film reconstructs the true stories of survivors from their accounts and diaries, to piece together what happened in the months leading up to the most famous eruption of all time.

Instead of what should have been prime and mild autumn conditions, Dawes, Maritime, Suckers, Christopher Denny and the Natives, Snowblink, Paleo, and Brooks Strause were greeted with frigid temperatures, some 30 degrees below normal, with highs never getting out of the low 40s. Bands played in these open-air barns wearing as much as they possibly could, drinking whiskey and hot cocoa faster than they normally would have. We started the 6-day tour in Milwaukee, Wisc., at the Turner Hall Ballroom, the only non-barn, but the result of a kind offer from our friend Ryan Matteson of Muzzle of Bees. It was one of only two nights in warmth, though the show happened on a rainy evening. Night two saw the caravan take us to Lodi, Wisc., and the Treinen Farm Pumpkin Patch, which was a playground of fall delights, including a corn maze, pumpkin launches and plenty of goats and horses. Night three took us back to Maquoketa, Iowa, where the Biehl family had erected a stage for Barnstormer. There was an ice cream cake and crock pot after crock pot of soup and chili to eat the morning after. Then it was a short drive north to Bellevue for a return to the Mooney Hollow Saloon, where heat was had once again and the bed & breakfast was fantastic. We returned to West Liberty on the following day and ended the tour in Johnston, Iowa, with an ice storm closing out the night.

Sorry!!!!!} A Look the city of Louisville Kentucky just after the American Civil War, and it growth into the 1960's. 1883 - tornadoes was one measuring F4 on the Fujita scale, which visited Louisville, Kentucky. The tornado carved a path from the Parkland neighborhood all the way to Crescent Hill, destroying 766 buildings ($2½ million worth of property) and killing an estimated 76 to 120 people. At least 55 of those deaths occurred when the Falls City Hall collapsed. This is one of the highest death tolls due to a single building collapse from a tornado in U.S. history. In addition, it was one of the 25 most deadly tornadoes in U.S. history until May 22, 2011. It was relegated to 26th when the May 22, 2011, tornado in Joplin, Missouri, killed 158. 1875 The First Kentucky Derby The 1875 Kentucky Derby was the 1st running of the Kentucky Derby. The race took place on May 17, 1875.[1] The first Kentucky Derby was a 1.5 mile race, and the traditional distance of 1.25 miles was not established until the 1896 Derby.[2] Thirteen of the fifteen jockeys in the race, including winner Oliver Lewis, were African-American. Won by an African-American jockey Oliver Lewis (1856--1924) was an African-American jockey in Thoroughbred horse racing. In 1875, Lewis rode in the very first Kentucky Derby on the winning horse, Aristides. Lewis and Aristides took second place in the Belmont Stakes, which is now the third race of the Triple Crown 1917 Camp Taylor is a neighborhood and former military base six miles southeast of downtown Louisville, Kentucky, USA. First announced on June 11 it was originally a military camp named for former president Zachary Taylor. For a time it was America's largest military training camp, housing 47,500 men at one time, and spurred development in an area that was previously dominated by farmland. 1920s The extension towards the river west of the city creating the city's history westend. Disenfranchised African American residents of Little Africa it included several hundred homes as well as businesses and schools. In the 1870s, Joseph S. Cotter, Sr. became the first African American resident in the Homestead settlement. 1927 Jim Brown President of The First National Bank Of Louisville. •October 28, 1929 (Black Monday): The rally ends. Panic selling resumes. The Dow drops almost 40 points (nearly 13 percent) to close 260.64. October 29, 1929 (Black Tuesday): The Dow drops another 30 points (nearly 12 percent) to close at 230.07 on trading of 16 million shares. July 8, 1932: The Dow closes at 41.22, an 89 percent drop from its pre-crash high. 1937, intense rains drenched Louisville and continued falling for days. The Ohio River rose to levels never recorded before or since.The result was the "Great Flood of 1937"For residents of the Louisville area, it was a "massive" life-changing experience for 27 days. 200 Louisville residents died in the flood, according to the Encyclopedia of Louisville. In Louisville, the river crested about 30 feet above flood stage Jan. 27, and about 175,000 people were evacuated. While The Westend hit the hardest the Ohio rose up 50ft.a long Broadway. Le 06 février 2011, l'émission “Une vie, une oeuvre”, dirigée par Matthieu Garrigou-Lagrange et diffusée tous les samedis sur les ondes de France Culture, était consacrée à la vie et l'oeuvre du compositeur allemand, Richard Wagner (1813-1883). Par Christine Lecerf et Jean-Christophe Francis « C’est l’effet d’un venin, d’un poison, d’une ingestion mortelle. » Friedrich Nietzsche « C’est le triomphe absolu de la germanité anticivilisatrice. » Thomas Mann « Musique très belle, tu élèves ma haine et mon envie. » Paul Valéry « On ne peut aimer Wagner que “malgré”. » Julien Gracq Aucun artiste n’a été autant admiré et haï. Et aucun musicien, hormis peut-être Mozart, n’a autant déclenché de fantasmagories sur sa vie. Richard Wagner a sans doute contribué à sa légende en stylisant sa propre existence par le biais de son autobiographie “Ma vie” - et de son “Journal” pris en note par sa femme, Cosima Wagner, la fille de son ami Franz Liszt. À la fois, artiste maudit au béret noir, prince de l’art total en peignoir de soie sur sa colline de Bayreuth et génie archétype de la mort à Venise, Wagner, dès sa mort, en 1883, cesse d’être un personnage réel pour devenir un « masque élastique » (Timothée Picard) que chacun remodèle à sa façon. Mais l’oeuvre de Wagner est elle aussi un lieu indécidable, capable d’engendrer le meilleur comme le pire. Si Proust en son temps peut écrire qu’en entendant un thème de Tristan, « la mort a quelque chose de moins amer, de moins inglorieux, peut-être de moins probable », une telle conception rédemptrice de la musique devient totalement impensable après Auschwitz. Les propos antisémites de Richard Wagner, notamment dans son essai de 1850, Le judaïsme dans la musique, et la récupération politique de son oeuvre par les nazis, font qu’il est encore aujourd’hui impossible de jouer la musique de Wagner « sans savoir qu’elle va blesser des gens » (Oswald Sallaberger). Prônant l’utopie d’une fusion entre les arts et la communauté, exigeant l’impossible de ses musiciens comme de son public, portant le chant à des confins inexplorés, l’opéra de Wagner est une « aventure que tout musicien rêve d’avoir vécu au moins une fois dans sa vie » (Florent Audibert). Mais une telle rupture avec la tradition constitue également un défi artistique que l’artiste s’est lancé à lui-même. Pour André Tubeuf, c’est sans doute à Wotan que Wagner s’est le plus profondément identifié, cette figure dans la Tétralogie du Dieu triste, qui boit la coupe amère de ce qu’il a commis jusqu’à la lie. Elevé dans une famille d’acteurs, passionné de théâtre, Wagner apparaît finalement comme celui qui a porté « la tragédie du vouloir » jusqu’à son paroxysme.
