James Hart Dyke - Whymper's Mountains 150 Years On
A video from James Hart Dyke's recent expedition across the Alps for his latest exhibition ‘Whymper’s Alps 150 years'.
During August 2015 James trekked and climbed across the Alps, following, as far as was possible, in the footsteps of Edward Whymper, a nineteenth century artist and climber. In just 31 days in 1865 Whymper and his guides climbed five mountains and eleven passes. Four of those s

Film showing the lure of the Matterhorn for climbers. Mountaineers include a blind man and Sir John Hunt and his wife. Good adventurous feel to the film. Narrator speaks of the history of climbers on the mountain including Edward Whymper.
Lots of good shots of climbers on various stages of the ascent. C/Us of walking boots, of hands grabbing on to rock, feet slipping etc. Aerial views of the mountain. Lone men walking through the snowy, rocky landscape.
We also see the Swiss village of Zermatt at the base of the mountain. C/Us of tombstones of graves of walkers who have met their death on the mountain. Climbing equipment shop. Walkers with knapsacks and walking equipment walk through the village. Mules are loaded up with supplies for the climb. Zermatt is seen in the rain - narrator observes that rain in the village means snow on the mountain. A group of children and women shoppers walk through the village.
Footage of a walking group in snow on the mountain.
Dawn over the mountain. Walkers prepare to continue their journey. Sir John Hunt of Everest fame is joining Pathe for the ascent. The party start their walk. Lady Hunt joins them. Shots of the guide - Theodore Kronig. He is 64 and this will be his last ascent. Mountain cameraman Otto Karminski is in charge of filming. A blind man is seen being helped on the ascent. Views of the icy landscape as Kronig clambers up the side of the mountain. Crampons are attached to boots. Slow motion aerial views of the mountain. Men use ropes to aid them in their climb. Climber (probably Theodore) reaches the summit and waves to the camera. More views of the mountain.
Note: unfortunately there is a rather large scratch on the print - no neg available. Cuts exist - see other record.

Leo Dickinson’s film recreates Edward Whymper’s subsequent ascent followed by the worst mountaineering disaster of the century when the rope breaks and four of his team fall to their deaths. This stunning opening sequence is followed by even more drama as Leo’s team climbs the North Wall in winter haunted by the music of Tubular Bells.

Scrambles Amongst the Alps in the Years 1860-69
Edward WHYMPER (1840 - 1911)
Scrambles Amongst the Alps is one the great classics (some would say the greatest) of early mountaineering literature, and Edward Whymper (1840-1911) one of the leading figures of the early years of Alpine climbing. He is best known, of course, for his many attempts on the Matterhorn, and for the loss of four members of his climbing party after the successful first ascent of the peak in July, 1865. Although the Matterhorn stands in ways in the center of his book, there are descriptions of many other ascents as well, in the Alps of France and Italy, as well as those of Switzerland. His book, incidentally, has many of his drawings in it (he was originally an illustrator by profession), and listeners might wish to call up the .pdf file from which it is read, to have the benefit of the illustrations.
Four of those summits were first ascents including the Matterhorn, where four of his climbing partners died during the descent. James was accompanied by a climber who acted as his guide. Using a specially designed lightweight painting set he made studies of the mountains that Whymper climbed.
The paintings will be shown at John Mitchell Fine Paintings, 44 Old Bond Street, London W1S 4GB | 12th -25th November 2015.

On 14 July 1865 Englishman Edward Whymper successfully completed the first ascent of the Matterhorn.
However, his triumph ended in tragedy, with four of the seven men in the party of first ascenders plunging to their death after the rope broke during the descent.
The sensational amount of media interest that followed the first ascent resulted in more and more tourists travelling to Zermatt, launching a tourism trend that has lasted 150 years.
Today the Zermatt-Matterhorn destination is the best known destination in the Swiss Alps -- car-free and set among 38 peaks of 4,000 m and more.
365 days a year guests are able to enjoy every kind of winter sport at the highest ski resort anywhere in the Alps.
In summer 400 km of hiking trails and mountain excursions await.

July 14th, 2015, will mark the 150th anniversary of the dramatic first ascent of Matterhorn.
But on Tuesday (September 16) one of the world's most photographed mountains occupied centre stage in the prelude to the anniversary celebrations.
Mountain guides from Zermatt retraced the world-famous Hörnligrat mountain route with a chain of lights to pay tribute to British climber Edward Whymper's rope team who did the very first ascent back in 1865, the event organisers said in a press release.
"I think it is a great idea to light up the Hoernli ridge, I mean that's the way the first ascent they made it, it's a great idea to do that and especially for next year for the 150th anniversary of the first ascent," said alpinist David Fasel.
The guides set up a temporary chain of lights at the famous Helvetian mountain. The event was photographed by well-known Swiss mountain sports photographer Robert Bösch.
The lights followed the route from Hörnligrat to the summit.
In many parts of the chain, the climbers wore headlamps at their helmets. In other places, local mountain guides had pre-installed the lamps.
The mountain guides are set to illuminate the route for a whole month in the anniversary year, according to event organisers.
The first ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865, by British climber Edward Whymper, is closely linked to the birth of alpinism and the rise of tourism in the Swiss Alps. The dramatic peak is scaled by thousands of climbers annually.

The first ascent of the Matterhorn was made by Edward Whymper, Lord Francis Douglas, Charles Hudson, Douglas Hadow, Michel Croz, and the two Zermatt guides, Peter Taugwalder father and son, on 14 July 1865. Douglas, Hudson, Hadow and Croz were killed on the descent when Hadow slipped and pulled the other three with him down the north face. Whymper and the Taugwalder guides, who survived, were later accused of having cut the rope below to ensure that they were not dragged down with the others, but the subsequent inquiry found no proof of this and they were acquitted.
The ascent followed a long series of attempts by Edward Whymper and Jean-Antoine Carrel to reach the summit. The first successful expedition was followed shortly after by an Italian expedition that ascended the Italian ridge on the other side of the mountain. The Matterhorn was the last great Alpine peak to be climbed and its first ascent marked the end of the golden age of alpinism.

wn.com/La Recherche De La Vérité Première Ascension Du Cervin – 150 Ans Plus Tard

Today's Highlight in History:
On July 14, 1865, the Matterhorn, straddling Italy and Switzerland, was summited as a seven-member rope party led by British climber Edward Whymper reached the peak. (Four members of the party fell to their deaths during their descent; Whymper and two guides survived.)
On this date:
In 1789, in an event symbolizing the start of the French Revolution, citizens of Paris stormed the Bastille prison and released the seven prisoners inside.
In 1881, outlaw William H. Bonney Jr., alias "Billy the Kid," was shot and killed by Sheriff Pat Garrett in Fort Sumner in present-day New Mexico.
In 1913, Gerald Rudolph Ford Jr., the 38th president of the United States, was born Leslie Lynch King Jr. in Omaha, Nebraska.
In 1921, Italian-born anarchists Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti were convicted in Dedham, Massachusetts, of murdering a shoe company paymaster and his guard. (Sacco and Vanzetti were executed six years later.)
In 1933, all German political parties, except the Nazi Party, were outlawed. Cartoon character Popeye the Sailor made his movie debut in the Fleischer Studios animated short, "Popeye the Sailor."
In 1943, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed a measure providing funds for a national monument honoring scientist George Washington Carver; the monument was built at Carver's birthplace near Diamond, Missouri.
In 1958, the army of Iraq overthrew the monarchy.
In 1965, the American space probe Mariner 4 flew by Mars, sending back photographs of the red planet. United Nations Ambassador Adlai E. Stevenson II died in London at age 65.
In 1966, eight student nurses were murdered by Richard Speck in a Chicago dormitory.
In 1976, Jimmy Carter won the Democratic presidential nomination at the party's convention in New York.
In 1980, the Republican national convention opened in Detroit, where nominee-apparent Ronald Reagan told a welcoming rally he and his supporters were determined to "make America great again."
In 1999, race-based school busing in Boston came to an end after 25 years.
Ten years ago: Chief U.S. Justice William H. Rehnquist, ending a two-day stay in the hospital, pledged to continue working as long as his health permitted. (Rehnquist died in September 2005.)
Five years ago: An Iranian nuclear scientist who'd disappeared a year earlier headed back to Tehran, telling Iranian state media that he'd been abducted by CIA agents. (The U.S. said Shahram Amiri was a willing defector who'd changed his mind.)
One year ago: Citigroup agreed to pay $7 billion to settle a federal investigation into its handling of risky subprime mortgages. The Church of England voted overwhelmingly in favor of allowing women to become bishops.

In recent years more Taiwanese have taken up skiing. While many head to the slopes of Hokkaido, Japan, there is also a wide range of resorts to choose from in Europe. FTV’s Jinny Chang spoke with the Swiss representative to Taipei, Rolf Frei, to learn more about the popular resorts and tourist amenities his country offers. The southwestern town of Zermatt, located near Switzerland’s border with Italy, is at the foothills of the Matterhorn, one of the most iconic mountains in the Alps. Home to the highest elevation ski resorts in Europe, Zermatt has a maximum lift elevation of 3,883 meters. Skiing from here is like starting a run at the top of Yushan. No wonder the region is known for its long ski runs.Rolf FreiSwiss Representative We have in Switzerland around 30 ski resorts, which are on high altitudes, over 2,800 meters. That means you’re sure to have snow. Compared to resorts in the United States and Japan, those in Switzerland offer wide vantages. Few trees block your line of vision to the peaks that wrap around the resorts. The majestic scenery is one of the highlights of skiing in Switzerland. Records from a ski association in Taiwan show that more people are traveling abroad each year to ski. In 2013, 8,000 skiing trips were made, and in 2014 the total exceeded 10,000. To compete in this market, travel agencies are introducing a variety of itineraries. Rolf Frei, who began serving as Switzerland’s representative to Taipei over two months ago, starting skiing at age 3. By the time Frei was a teenager, he had received a coaching license. Frei says that coaches today must not only be adept at skiing but also at languages.Rolf FreiSwiss Representative Now what is also happening in Switzerland, when you compare them to other countries, is that they trained Chinese-speaking instructors. To attract more Asian tourists, ski resorts provide diverse peripheral facilities. Taiwanese tourists can be found at resort hot springs that source clean, mineral-rich water from the Alps. The hot springs experience in Switzerland differs from the experience in Japan that Taiwanese are most familiar with. Hot springs excursions last several hours and feel more like hydrotherapy. They involve switching between indoor and outdoor pools.Rolf FreiSwiss Representative There is one hot spring I really like. It’s in the eastern corner of Switzerland. It’s a place called Scuol. It’s just the scenery there. You have the hot spring pool, you’re outside and you have Jacuzzi there. Tourism is one of the most important sectors in Switzerland. With more than 150,000 full-time jobs, it contributes about 3 percent of GDP. Rolf FreiSwiss Representative Actually Switzerland is the origin of winter tourism. So this year, 150 years ago, the first tourist came in from England. In 1865, a group that included English mountaineer Edward Whymper became the first to ascend Matterhorn. From this time forward, adventurers from around the world came to Zermatt to emulate the route this group followed. This helped kick start Switzerland’s tourism industry.July 14 this year marks the 150th year since the first ascent of the Matterhorn, and Zermatt will stage traditional events and outdoor activities to celebrate. For those who would also like to have a taste of Switzerland during the summer season this may be a time to visit.

Josephine Elizabeth Butler was a Victorian era British feminist who was strongly committed to liberal reforms. As a result of her efforts, international organisations including the International Abolitionist Federation were set up to campaign against state regulation of prostitution and the trafficking in women and children. This book reflects her abhorrence of slavery in all its forms and is particularly pertinent in our world of today. (Summary by Wikipedia)

Training for the New Alpinism: A Manual for the Climber as Athlete by Steve House, Scott Johnston and Mark Twigh
In Training for the New Alpinism, Steve House, world-class climber and Patagonia ambassador, and Scott Johnston, coach of U.S. National Champions and World Cup Nordic Skiers, translate training theory into practice to allow you to coach yourself to any mountaineering goal. Applying training practices from other endurance sports, House and Johnston demonstrate that following a carefully designed regimen is as effective for alpinism as it is for any other endurance sport and leads to better performance. They deliver detailed instruction on how to plan and execute training tailored to your individual circumstances. Whether you work as a banker or a mountain guide, live in the city or the country, are an ice climber, a mountaineer heading to Denali, or a veteran of 8,000-meter peaks, your understanding of how to achieve your goals grows exponentially as you work with this book. Chapters cover endurance and strength training theory and methodology, application and planning, nutrition, altitude, mental fitness, and assessing your goals and your strengths. Chapters are augmented with inspiring essays by world-renowned climbers, including Ueli Steck, Mark Twight, Peter Habeler, Voytek Kurtyka, and Will Gadd. Filled with photos, graphs, and illustrations.
