The logic of Western colonialism, furthered by postcolonial criticism?
The logic of Western colonialism, furthered by postcolonial criticism?
The absurdity and moral fastidiousness of Saidean postcolonialism. The Western colonial project proper was always about morality and the sense of being superior to others through exhibiting a higher degree of moral fastidiousness. How does Saidean postcolonial criticism change this colonial trajectory? It extends the colonial mindset through masochism and mea culpa.

【哲學「非」星期五@台北】─《殖民主義與台灣(Shattering the Myth--What we have to do for de-colonialism?)

Colonialism and its legacies have emerged as one of the most important research topics in anthropology. Indeed, we now understand that colonialism gave rise to and shaped the discipline. However, the understanding of colonization in anthropology, history, and other fields derives largely from studies of European expansion. In this volume, ten archaeologists analyze the assumptions that have constrained previous studies of colonialism and demonstrate that colonization was common in early Old and New World state societies-an important strategy by which people gained access to critical resour

In this rich study of the construction and reconstruction of a colonized landscape, Prudence M. Rice takes an implicit political ecology approach in exploring encounters of colonization in Moquegua, a small valley of southern Peru. Building on theories of spatiality, spatialization, and place, she examines how politically mediated human interaction transformed the physical landscape, the people who inhabited it, and the resources and goods produced in this poorly known area.Space-Time Perspectives on Early Colonial Moquegua looks at the encounters between existing populations and newcomers

Over the past forty years, recognition has become the dominant mode of negotiation and decolonization between the nation-state and Indigenous nations in North America. The term “recognition” shapes debates over Indigenous cultural distinctiveness, Indigenous rights to land and self-government, and Indigenous peoples’ right to benefit from the development of their lands and resources. In a work of critically engaged political theory, Glen Sean Coulthard challenges recognition as a method of organizing difference and identity in liberal politics, questioning the assumption that contemporary d

For the sake of understand colonialism and what colonialists thought of the 'Eastern World,' these are a series of painting depicting this subject. The Western view of the East was to combine multiple continents into one racist tapestry of stereotypes. Though some of the images are quite beautiful, they depict the stereotypical notion that people of the East (including Africa, Persia, and other parts of Asia) were full of brothels, decadence, and (although not shown here) pedophilia. It's a sad chapter in our world history, and many people are completely unaware that such a stereotype even existed. The point here is to educate people about su

In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, American Indians in the United States and Aboriginal people in Australia suffered a common experience at the hands of state authorities: the removal of their children to institutions in the name of assimilation. Although officially characterized as benevolent, these policies often inflicted great trauma on indigenous families and ultimately served the settler nations’ larger goals of consolidating control over indigenous peoples and their lands. White Mother to a Dark Race examines the key roles white women played in these removal polic

An incisive and illuminating account of how, during the Algerian Revolution, the people of Algeria changed centuries-old cultural patterns and embraced certain ancient cultural practices long derided by their colonialist oppressors as primitive, in order to destroy those same oppressors. Fanon uses the fifth year of the Algerian Revolution as a point of departure for an explication of the inevitable dynamics of colonial oppression.

Pope Francis Calls for End to “New Colonialism”
Speaking to social movements in Santa Cruz, Bolivia on Thursday, Pope Francis called for an end to a “new colonialism” by organizations that impose harsh austerity, free trade agreements and money-lending policies that harm the world’s poorest. He said those who live below the poverty line should not be reduced to producing raw materials and cheap labor for developed countries. He also referred to the unscrupulous pursuit of money as the “dung of the devil” and said the poor are entitled to land, labor and shelter.

Over the course of three centuries, American settlers spread throughout North America and beyond, driving out indigenous populations to establish exclusive and permanent homelands of their own. In doing so, they helped to create the richest and most powerful nation in human history, even as they caused the death and displacement of millions of people. This groundbreaking historical synthesis demonstrates that the United States is and has always been fundamentally a settler colonial society - and, indeed, that its growth as a country represents the most sweeping, violent, and significant in

For over five decades, North Korea has outlived many forecasts of collapse despite defects in its system. Origins of North Korea’s Juche: Colonialism, War, and Development, edited by Jae-Jung Suh, argues that it has survived because of Juche, a unique political institution built on the simple notion of self-determination, whose meanings and limits have been shaped by Koreans’ experiences with colonialism, war, and development amidst surrounding superpowers that have complicated their aspirations and plans. The authors in this volume collectively provide an historical institutionalist accou
