In which John Green teaches you about European Imperialism in the 19th century. European powers started to create colonial empires way back in the 16th century, but businesses really took off in the 19th century, especially in Asia and Africa. During the 1800s, European powers carved out spheres of influence in China, India, and pretty much all of Africa. While all of the major (and some minor) powers in Europe participated in this new imperialism, England was by far the most dominant, once able to claim that the "sun never set on the British Empire." Also, they went to war for the right to continue to sell opium to the people of China. Twice. John will teach you how these empires managed to leverage the advances of the Industrial Revolution to build vast, wealth-generating empires. As it turns out, improved medicine, steam engines, and better guns were crucial in the 19th century conquests. Also, the willingness to exploit and abuse the people and resources of so-called "primitive" nations was very helpful in the whole enterprise. In an effort to decolonize the remaining non-self-governing territories of the world, prevailing discourses on colonialism must be willing to grapple with the idea that American domination is rooted in colonial logic and practices. Hayida Sewer is a Ph.D. student in the Africana Studies Department at Brown University. She earned her B.A. in Sociology at Spelman College, where she was a Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellow. Hadiya's research interests include Africana feminism, Colonialism, and Radical Caribbean Thought. Her proposed dissertation examines the impact of American colonial rule on race, gender, sexuality, conceptions of the human, and sovereignty in the U.S. Virgin Islands. "And I call on UN, French and Ouattara forces to halt immediately "death squads" roving around the streets of Abidjan "disappearing" supporters of President Gbagbo." "This killing must stop now!" - - - - - - "This is not about the Gbagbos or Cote d'Ivoire, but about the modern day return to French Colonial Imperialism. And this time with the help of the United Nations." - - - - - - - - "President Museveni of Uganda who said yesterday, prior to the capture of the Gbagbos that: 'I have not been happy with the way the UN and International Community, especially the French have responded to the events of the post election Ivory Coast. I am not pleased with the way International Community can sanction a situation of blood bath in the domestic affairs of African Countries. The recommendation would include the possibility of a peaceful and conciliatory settlement towards a power-sharing deal as was done in the case of Kenya and Zimbabwe. At this point, I believe he would be happy to have a team of capable African leaders chosen under the auspices of African Union to work on a peaceful end to the conflict in Ivory Coast. I believe the Africa Union must be given the opportunity to handle the matter in-house. I am of course not pleased with the way the UN and the International Community has directly thrown their weight in support of Alassane Outtara and now recognizing him as president.'" - - - - - - "I have warned the UN and the French on this floor four times in the past week that they would have blood on their hands if they continued supporting the rebel forces of Alassane Ouattara and continued the bombing the capital of Cote d'Ivoire, Abidjan, and did not agree to an immediate cease-fire." - - - - - - - - "I also suggest that the United States step in to help and examine the possibility seeking a place of exile for the Gbagbos outside of Cote d'Ivoire. The U.S. has performed such a role before when in 1986, under the Reagan Administration, Haiti's "Baby Doc" Duvalier was sent into exile in France. This could be an important step towards beginning a process of reconciliation that the people of Cote d'Ivoire so dearly deserve." - - - - - - "Cote d'Ivoire has had a hard enough time trying to break free of the yoke of French colonialism. From the days of President Houphouet-Boigny in 1960 through Bedie in 2000 when Gbagbo was democratically elected. About the Presenter Vincent Intondi is an Associate Professor of history and founder of the Center for Black Studies at Montgomery College in Washington, DC. Intondi is also Director of Research for American University¹s Nuclear Studies. He is regular contributor to the Huffington Post and author of the book, African Americans Against the Bomb: Nuclear Weapons, Colonialism, and the Black Freedom Movement. About the Event Since 1945, African Americans have protested the Bomb. However, historians have generally ignored their involvement when studying the anti-nuclear movement. Now for the first time, African Americans Against the Bomb tells the compelling story of those black activists who fought for nuclear disarmament often connecting the nuclear issue with the fight for racial equality and liberation movements around the world. Vincent Intondi shows that many in the black community viewed nuclear weapons through the lens of race, openly questioning the decision to drop the Bomb in Japan and the threats to use nuclear weapons in Korea in the 1950s and in Vietnam a decade later. Black activists linked the nuclear issue to colonialism as they witnessed the United States obtaining uranium from the Congo and France testing its first nuclear weapon in Africa. From W.E.B. Its continuing mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go, where no one has gone before." - Opening credits of Star Trek: The Next Generation These are the opening lines of one of the most successful franchises of popular culture: Star Trek. In 1966 when the first episode of the science-fiction series "Star Trek" The Original Series was aired on US television author and creator Gene Roddenberry would not possibly have envisioned the cultural and political impact Star Trek would have even four decades later. He nevertheless envisioned very clearly that this "trek" would take its audience to "strange new worlds [...] and new civilizations". That this would exactly fall into the field of the discourses of postcolonial studies is no mere coincidence. The opening credits very straightforwardly indicate what voyages the audience will participate in. The exploration of "strange new worlds" and "new civilizations" recalls the narratives of Imperialism and Colonialism. Accordingly Star Trek can be read as another form of travelogue. The purpose of this work is to establish the narratives of Star Trek as a travelogue in the context of imperialist and colonial discourses. Having done so, I will examine Star Trek's standing within these discourses. My focus will be on the depiction of "the other" within Star Trek. On the basis of one episode of the TV series, Star Trek: The Next Generation I will juxtapose the argument of critics that Trek is either racist and imperialist in its conception or the depiction of a desirable Utopia.

The term “recognition” shapes debates over Indigenous cultural distinctiveness, Indigenous rights to land and self-government, and Indigenous peoples’ right to benefit from the development of their lands and resources.In a work of critically engaged political theory, Glen Sean Coulthard challenges recognition as a method of organizing difference and identity in liberal politics, questioning the assumption that contemporary difference and past histories of destructive colonialism between the state and Indigenous peoples can be reconciled through a process of acknowledgment. Beyond this, Coulthard examines an alternative politics—one that seeks to revalue, reconstruct, and redeploy Indigenous cultural practices based on self-recognition rather than on seeking appreciation from the very agents of colonialism.Coulthard demonstrates how a “place-based” modification of Karl Marx’s theory of “primitive accumulation” throws light on Indigenous–state relations in settler-colonial contexts and how Frantz Fanon’s critique of colonial recognition shows that this relationship reproduces itself over time. For the sake of understand colonialism and what colonialists thought of the 'Eastern World,' these are a series of painting depicting this subject. The Western view of the East was to combine multiple continents into one racist tapestry of stereotypes. Though some of the images are quite beautiful, they depict the stereotypical notion that people of the East (including Africa, Persia, and other parts of Asia) were full of brothels, decadence, and (although not shown here) pedophilia. It's a sad chapter in our world history, and many people are completely unaware that such a stereotype even existed. The point here is to educate people about such matters.

Although officially characterized as benevolent, these policies often inflicted great trauma on indigenous families and ultimately served the settler nations’ larger goals of consolidating control over indigenous peoples and their lands. White Mother to a Dark Race examines the key roles white women played in these removal policies. Government officials, missionaries, and reformers justified the removal of indigenous children in particularly gendered ways by focusing on the supposed deficiencies of indigenous mothers, the alleged barbarity of indigenous men, and the lack of a patriarchal nuclear family in indigenous societies. Often they deemed white women the most appropriate agents to carry out child-removal policies. Inspired by the maternalist movements of the era, many white women were eager to serve as surrogate mothers to indigenous children and maneuvered to influence public policy affecting indigenous people. Although some white women developed caring relationships with indigenous children and others became critical of government policies, many became ensnared in this insidious colonial policy.

The authors in this volume collectively provide an historical institutionalist account of North Korean politics organized around the concept of Juche—commonly translated as self-reliance, but best understood as subjecthood or being a master of one’s own fate—focusing on its role as a response to North Korea’s experiences with colonialism, the Korean War, and economic development. The contributors further discuss how Juche circumscribes the evolutionary path that North Koreans can take as they negotiate contemporary challenges. North Korea, as it is now, is best understood in terms of Juche which embodies the cumulative effect of its historical experiences and responses, and its future potential and trajectory, as enabled and constrained by its conception of Juche. This collection provides fascinating insights into the politics and history of one of the world’s most mysterious nations.
