On November 25th 1970, a man committed ritual suicide inside the Tokyo headquarters of the Japanese Ministry of Defence, leaving behind a legacy of masterpieces and a controversy that echoes to this day. The man was Yukio Mishima, one of Japan's greatest and most celebrated novelists. With four members of his own private army - the Tatenokai - Mishima had taken the commandant hostage and called upon the assembled military outside the Ministry to overthrow their society and restore the powers of the Emperor. When the soldiers mocked and jeered Mishima, he cut short his speech and withdrew to the commandant's office where he committed seppuku - the samurai warrior's death - tearing open his belly with a ceremonial knife before being beheaded by one of his colleagues. What was Mishima truly trying to express through his actions? And what did he witness during his final moments?

Yukio Mishima (Hiraoka Kimitake; Tokio, 1925 - 1970) Prolífico escritor japonés, autor de más de veinte novelas, decenas de piezas teatrales y numerosos cuentos, poemas, artículos y ensayos. Su temática audaz y descarnada, atenta a los aspectos más oscuros de las pasiones humanas, contrasta con la delicadeza y contención de su estilo. Probablemente el escritor nipón más conocido en el extranjero, trazó con doloroso detalle el desarrollo de la personalidad y el efecto devastador de las crueles paradojas de deseo y rechazo, de belleza y violencia, que la van conformando. De él dijo el galardonado Y. Kawabata: "No comprendo cómo me han dado el premio Nobel a mí existiendo Mishima. Un genio literario como el suyo lo produce la humanidad sólo cada dos o tres siglos. Tiene un don casi milagroso para las palabras". Yukio Mishima Nacido en una familia de burguesía media, Mishima se vanagloriaba sin embargo de pertenecer por sus antepasados a la clase de los samuráis. Criado por su abuela, realizó los estudios en Gakushüim, la escuela por tradición reservada a la nobleza. Escribió su primer cuento a los trece años y a los dieciséis su primer libro de relatos, que coincidió con su ingreso en la Facultad de Derecho. Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial trabajó en una fábrica aeronáutica, tras ser desestimado como piloto suicida. Sobrevivir a una guerra en la que habían muerto tantos compatriotas se convirtió para él en un trauma lacerante e imborrable. Mishima recibió el influjo del Nihon romanha, o romanticismo japonés, que poniendo énfasis en la unidad del Japón y de sus valores culturales, servía de base de apoyo a la ideología nacionalista y dominaba el mundo literario de los años de la guerra. Sin embargo, también la literatura occidental moderna fue para Mishima objeto de destacado interés y de atenta lectura. Su primer trabajo extenso, El bosque en flor, fue publicado en 1941. Una característica de esta obra, como de El cigarrillo (1946), Ladrones (1946-48) y de otras que escribió en el período de la Segunda Guerra Mundial y en los años inmediatamente subsiguientes, es el total alejamiento de la trágica realidad de la guerra y de la derrota. Tras obtener el doctorado en Derecho en 1947, fue encargado del Ministerio de Finanzas, pero tras un breve tiempo abandonó el empleo para dedicarse por entero a la actividad literaria. En junio de 1949 publicó Confesiones de una máscara, obra que cosechó un inmediato éxito y que supuso su definitiva consagración en el mundo literario. Aunque en general se acogió la novela con un juicio favorable, algunos críticos mostraron perplejidad y reservas frente a la particularidad del tema (la confesión por parte del protagonista de su homosexualidad) que ciertamente representaba una novedad en la literatura japonesa. Confesiones de una máscara es la historia del itinerario interior del protagonista a través de los recuerdos de la primera infancia hasta las fantasías de la adolescencia, y del lento y aceptado proceso de toma de conciencia de su diferencia y de la incapacidad, experimentada hasta el límite, de amar al sexo opuesto.

Yukio Mishima nace en el seno de una familia de clase alta y fue criado por su abuela Natsu, de aspiraciones aristocráticas y proveniente de una familia vinculada a los samurái de la era Tokugawa. Estudió en la exclusiva escuela Gakushüim, donde escribió su primer cuento en 1938 y en 1941 su primer libro de relatos. Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial (1938-1945) no pudo cumplir el servicio militar por estar enfermo de tuberculosis, suceso que él mismo entendió como una humillación y que se convirtió un trauma lacerante e imborrable y en su lugar trabajó en una fábrica aeronáutica. En 1947 Yukio Mishima obtuvo un doctorado en Derecho por la Universidad de Tokio y comenzó a trabajar como funcionario en el Ministerio de Finanzas japonés, pero tras un breve tiempo abandonó el empleo para dedicarse por entero a la actividad literaria. En junio de 1949 publicó "Confesiones de una máscara", obra que cosechó un inmediato éxito y que supuso su definitiva consagración en el mundo literario. Desde 1955 emprendió un intenso programa de actividad física que incluía levantamiento de pesas y artes marciales y tiempo después realizó adiestramiento militar en la base de Sietai, junto con un grupo de estudiantes universitarios. Después de una breve relación con Michiko Shoda (quien tiempo después se convertiría en esposa del Emperador Akihito), se casó con Yoko Sugiyama en 1958 y tiempo después la pareja tuvo dos hijos. Entre 1966 y 1970 publica su obra cumbre, la tetralogía "El mar de la fertilidad", compuesta por las novelas "Nieve de primavera" (1966), "Caballos desbocados" (1968), "El templo de la aurora" (1970) y "La corrupción de un ángel" (1970), completada esta última el mismo día de su muerte. Tras ocupar la sede del estado mayor nipón en un intento de forzar la recuperación de los ideales heroicos de preguerra, se quitó la vida mediante el rito del seppuku al grito de "Larga vida al emperador". Yet in 1970 Mishima shocked the world with a bizarre attempt at a coup d’état, which ended in his suicide by ritual disembowelment. In his radically new analysis of an extraordinary life, Damian Flanagan moves away from the stereotypical depiction of Mishima as a right-wing nationalist and aesthete and presents him as a man utterly obsessed with time – time-keeping devices and symbols – arguing that this compulsion was at the heart of the author’s literature and life. This book untangles the frequent distortions in the writer’s memoirs, which have often been taken at face value, and traces the evolution of Mishima’s attempts to master and transform both his sexuality and artistic persona. Though often perceived as a solitary protest figure, this book shows how Mishima was very much in tune with post-war culture: taking up bodybuilding and becoming a model and actor in the 1950s; adopting the themes of contemporary political scandals in his work; courting English translators and even becoming influenced by the student protests and hippy subculture of the late 1960s. Yet while being in thrall to the modern world, the flip side of Mishima’s personality – his hidden neuroses and the traumas of his youth – continually pushed him towards a firm rejection of modern Japan and his explosive final act of self-annihilation.

The full interview in Japanese with English subtitles: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NeskvAXHfZw Music: "Song for the Boys" by Pat Metheny Script: 終戦の詔勅自体については私は不思議な感動を通り越したような空白感しかありませんでした。それは必ずしも予期されたものではありませんでした。今までの自分の生きて来た世界がこのままどこへ向かって変わって行くのか。それは不思議でたまらなかった。そして戦争は澄んだら、あるいは戦争に負けたら、この世界崩壊するはずであるのに、まだ周りの木々が、みどりが、濃い夏の光浴びている。そのあと二十年は、一見太平無事な時代が続いているようでありますが、結局これは日本の工業化のおかげでありまして、精神的にはやはり何ら知的再建に値するものはなかったんではないか。リルケが書いておりますが、現代人というものはもうドラマチックな死が出来なくなってしまった。病院の一室で一つの細胞の中の蜂が死ぬように死んでいくというようなことどこかで書いていた記憶がしますが。今現代の死は病気にしろあるいは交通事故にしろ何らのドラマがない。英雄的な死というものもない時代に我々は生きております。それと死ぬのも何かのためということは必ず出てくる。それは昔言われた「大義」というものです。そして大義のために死ぬということは人間の最も華々しい、あるいは英雄的な、あるいは立派な死にかたというふうに考えられている。しかし今は大義がない。これは民主主義の政治形態というものは大義なんといらない政治形態ですから。当然なんですが。それでも、心の中に自分を超える価値が認められなければ、生きていることすら無意味なるというような心理状態ないわけではない。自分に返って考えてみますと、死を、いつか来るんだと、決して遠くない将来に来るんだというふうに考えいたときの心理状態は今に比べたら幸福だったんです。それは実に不思議なことですが、記憶の中で美しく見えるだけでなく、人間そういうときに妙に幸福になる。そして今我々求めている幸福というものは生きる幸福であり、そして生きるということは、あるいは家庭の幸福であり、あるいはレジャーの幸福であり、楽しみでありますでしょうが。しかしあんな自分が死ぬと決まっている人間というものは今ちょっとないじゃないか。そういうことを考えて死というもの、じゃお前恐れないのか？それは私は病気になれば死を恐れます。それから癌になるのも、一番嫌で。考えるだに恐ろしい。それだけに、なんかもっと名誉のある、もっと何かのためになる死に方をしたいと思いながらも、結局［はぐれ」の著者のように、生まれて来た時代が悪くて、一生そういうことを思い暮しながら畳の上で死ぬことになるだろうと思います。
