The leak of highly radioactive wastewater was detected on Friday. Tokyo Electric Power Company, or TEPCO, estimates that 7 to 15 tons of water leaked from a crack in the hose, some into the plant's port. Water sampled from 4 locations inside the port turned up the highest levels of radioactive substances since monitoring began 2 years ago. Company officials say the crack in the hose was caused by stress from excessive bending that went beyond the permissible level set by its maker. TEPCO had been replacing the same type of hose at other parts of the plant due to doubts about its durability. But the one that leaked was left untouched since it was placed at a site where workers were busy building a wall of frozen soil around the nuclear complex to keep groundwater from seeping into the reactor buildings. No clear rules for patrols were in place at the site. A worker passing by happened to notice the leak.TEPCO plans to speed up work to replace the hoses with stronger ones. It also plans to draw up a new manual to ensure proper monitoring when the hoses are used. Reactor expected to restart in August Nuclear & Energy Jun. 1, 2015 - Updated 08:38 UTC-4 Further delays are likely in the process of restarting a nuclear reactor in Kagoshima Prefecture in southwest Japan. Kyushu Electric Power Company says it now expects to restart the Number 1 reactor at its plant in Satsumasendai City in mid-August or later. The utility on Monday submitted an updated plan to the Nuclear Regulation Authority for on-site inspections of facilities at the Number 1 and Number 2 reactors. Kyushu Electric was previously aiming to restart the Number 1 reactor in late July, after the required inspections that began in March. But the utility says the inspections will take more time than previously thought. It says it now plans to load nuclear fuel into the reactor in early July. Before restarting the reactor, the utility needs to receive a check-up by the nuclear regulator on drills assuming a severe accident. Last September, the 2 reactors at the plant became Japan's first to clear the Authority's screenings under the country's new, stricter requirements introduced after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear accident. None of Japan's 43 reactors are currently online.
