Inner Hebrides

The Inner Hebrides (Scottish Gaelic: Na h-Eileanan a-staigh, "the inner isles") is an archipelago off the west coast of mainland Scotland, to the south east of the Outer Hebrides. Together these two island chains form the Hebrides, which experience a mild oceanic climate. The Inner Hebrides comprise 35 inhabited islands as well as 44 uninhabited islands with an area greater than 30 hectares (74 acres). The main commercial activities are tourism, crofting, fishing and whisky distilling. In modern times the Inner Hebrides have formed part of two separate local government jurisdictions, one to the north and the other to the south. Together, the islands have an area of about 4,130 km² (1,594 sq mi), and had a population of 18,948 in 2011. The population density is therefore about 4.6 per km² (12 per square mile).

There are various important prehistoric structures, many of which pre-date the first written references to the islands by Roman and Greek authors. In the historic period the earliest known settlers were Picts to the north and Gaels in the southern kingdom of Dál Riada prior to the islands becoming part of the Suðreyjar kingdom of the Norse, who ruled for over 400 years until sovereignty was transferred to Scotland by the Treaty of Perth in 1266. Control of the islands was then held by various clan chiefs, principally the MacLeans, MacLeods and MacDonalds. The Highland Clearances of the 19th century had a devastating effect on many communities and it is only in recent years that population levels have ceased to decline.

Skye

Skye or the Isle of Skye (/skaɪ/; Scottish Gaelic: An t-Eilean Sgitheanach or Eilean a' Cheò) is the largest and most northerly major island in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland. The island's peninsulas radiate from a mountainous centre dominated by the Cuillins, the rocky slopes of which provide some of the most dramatic mountain scenery in the country. Although it has been suggested that the Gaelic Sgitheanach describes a winged shape there is no definitive agreement as to the name's origins.

The island has been occupied since the Mesolithic period and its history includes a time of Norse rule and a long period of domination by Clan MacLeod and Clan Donald. The 18th-century Jacobite risings led to the breaking up of the clan system and subsequent Clearances that replaced entire communities with sheep farms, some of which also involved forced emigrations to distant lands. Resident numbers declined from over 20,000 in the early 19th century to just under 9,000 by the closing decade of the 20th century. Skye's population increased by 4 per cent between 1991 and 2001. About a third of the residents were Gaelic speakers in 2001, and although their numbers are in decline this aspect of island culture remains important.

The Isle of Skye offers over 150 different whiskies, mainly focusing on single malt scotch, but including American Bourbon, Japanese Whisky, and French, Irish, and Indian styles, among others. Several NY magazine sites have written positive reviews.

Daisy Johnson

Daisy Louise Johnson, also known as Quake and Skye, is a fictional superheroine appearing in comic books published by Marvel Comics. Created by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Gabriele Dell'Otto, the character first appeared in Secret War #2 (July 2004). The daughter of the supervillain Mister Hyde, she is a secret agent of the intelligence organization S.H.I.E.L.D. with the power to generate earthquakes. In the television series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Chloe Bennet portrays the Marvel Cinematic Universe version of the character, reimagining her as an Inhuman originally known as Skye. Aspects of this interpretation were later integrated back into the comics.

Publication history

A member of the international espionage agency S.H.I.E.L.D., she was created by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Gabriele Dell'Otto, and first appeared in Secret War #2 (July 2004). During Secret Invasion, she joins Nick Fury's Secret Warriors under the codename Quake.

Her look was modeled after actress Angelina Jolie in the film Hackers.

Vicky Swain

Victoria Swain (born 26 December 1985), better known by her ring name Vicky Skye often shortened to Skye, is a retired British professional wrestler. Four years into her career, she was voted in the top twenty women wrestlers in the United Kingdom. She is also a qualified fitness instructor.

Skye describes her gimmick in wrestling as "No-nonsense, sweet yet very tough girl with a wild streak". Skye works a mixed style of wrestling, as she has been taught in the British old-school style. She, however, also occasionally uses new school and high flying styles. Skye's ring gear is often blue, but she previously wrestled in a school girl costume.

Professional wrestling career

Swain would be first trained in the Dropkixx academy before debuting in 2002 under her own name, and for a short-time, "Minx". Swain quickly adopted the name "Vicky Skye", however, which was later shortened to "Skye" and is the ring name she has continued to use throughout her independent circuit tours of the United Kingdom and Europe.
