Kuttabul 1942
31st of May 1942 saw war come to Sydney Harbour. A Japanese midget submarine fired a torpedo at the USS Chicago tied up near to Kuttabul. The torpedo missed and instead exploded under the ferry, rupturing her hull plates and sinking her instantly. Nineteen naval men asleep on board at the time were killed.
The Garden Island base is now named HMAS Kuttabul in commemoration of the event. Her wheelhouse is now on display at the parade ground of the base.

80th Anniversary of the midget submarine attack on Sydney Harbour (31 May - 1 June 1942)
Eighty years ago tonight, Sydney Harbour came under attack from three midget submarines dispatched by the Imperial Japanese Navy. Today, the Harbour Trust acknowledges and commemorates those who were wounded or lost their lives during the attack (31 May to 1 June 1942), including 21 sailors aboard the HMAS Kuttabul. To mark the occasion, we filmed a short video featuring Member of the Trust, Brad Manera, at North Head Sanctuary where Australian servicepeople bravely defended Sydney Harbour during World War II.
