Pledged

During WWII, Americans Mobilized to Save Civilization.

We can do it again.

The United States was slow to enter World War II, but once Pearl Harbor jolted us out of denial, we mobilized and led the Allies to victory. Through the Pledge, citizens can defeat denial and call forth a massive mobilization. Our efforts will inspire and persuade nations around the world to mobilize with us. We can rise to the challenge of our time, together.

Experts Agree

Climate Change Threatens Civilization

Dr. Lonnie G. Thompson

Climate Scientist
Ohio State University

"Climatologists, like other scientists, tend to be a stolid group. We are not given to theatrical rantings about falling skies... Why then are climatologists speaking about the dangers of global warming? The answer is virtually all of us are now convinced that global warming poses a clear and present danger to civilization."

Dr. James E. Hansen

Climate Scientist
Columbia University

"Coal is the single greatest threat to civilization and all life on our planet. The climate is nearing tipping points... There is a potential for explosive changes, effects that would be irreversible, if we do not rapidly slow fossil-fuel emissions over the next few decades."

United States Department of Defense

The Pentagon

“Climate change will affect the Department of Defense’s ability to defend the nation and poses immediate risks to U.S. national security."

We need a WWII-Style mobilization to Fight It

Lester R. Brown

Earth Policy Institute President and former USDA global issues specialist.

"Saving civilization will take a massive mobilization, and at wartime speed. The closest analogy is the belated U.S. mobilization during World War II."

Dr. Daniel Pauly

Professor of Fisheries and Zoology, University of British Columbia

"We are not dealing with [climate change] in terms of the danger that this represents. It's like a war. When there is a war, the industry is put on a war footing, and within weeks it stops producing cars…and it starts producing airplanes. World War II is a good example."

Dr. Joseph Romm

M.I.T. physicist, author, and former Department of Energy policy secretary

"WWII is the only plausibly-close metaphor for the scale of effort needed to...preserve a livable climate."

FAQs and FROs (Frequently Raised Objections)

  • Should I take the Pledge?
  • Taking the Pledge to Mobilize is a major commitment. You should take it because you know that climate change is a threat to civilization, and you want to do what you can to call on the United States government to lead a society-wide mobilization that fights back with everything we’ve got...

  • I am already involved in climate change advocacy. Would I have to give this up if I take the Pledge?
  • Absolutely not! The Pledge to Mobilize should work synergistically with other campaigns. For example, protests for divestment or against the Keystone pipeline could include a teach-in about the Pledge, or have a table where people can discuss it and possibly sign it. Educators, such as those with the Climate Reality Project, can easily include a description of the Pledge to Mobilize in their public presentations. People involved in local Transition Town or resilience activities can add the Pledge as a national extension of their local initiatives....
