Police are ready to respond to any possible outbreak of violence in or around the St. Louis suburb Ferguson, where weeks of heated protests followed the killing in August. Mary MacCarthy reports: Historic comet landing attempt underway The European Space Agency has released a probe from its Rosetta satellite to attempt a historic landing on a comet. If successful, the probe would provide the closest look mankind has ever had at a comet. Ira Spitzer reports from Berlin. Russian bomber patrols to reach Gulf of Mexico The military says Russia's long-range bombers will go from the Arctic Ocean to the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico on regular patrol missions, in a show of muscle reflecting tensions with the West over Ukraine. A statement from Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu s statement comes as NATO has reported a spike in Russian military flights over the Black, Baltic and North seas as well as the Atlantic Ocean. *FROM THE VAULT* Alaska is Missing

I've recently decided to release some of my unfinished work that otherwise would never see release. Some of it is incomplete, or purely conceptual and a great deal of it is very unpolished. I likely will never pursue any of these fragments to completion, but I thought it would be fun to share some of the things that I've worked on in the past, that, for one reason or another, got left behind. And all that could have been. . . "Alaska is Missing." There was a flyer posted to a light pole last year at a college that I attended that read "Alaska is Missing" (Alaska being a cat). Me and my friends joked about embarking on an epic quest to find Alaska. I thought the headline "Alaska is Missing" was catchy and could be a good title for a movie, so I pursued the idea through film of two guys out to "find Alaska." This little short was a concept and essentially the first scene of a larger project. The live action footage is actually still photography taken with my Macbook Pro's internal iSight camera. The Halo footage was taken from Halo Custom Edition. This was my first time using Halo Custom Edition and I was really inspired by the amount of freedom it allowed compared to traditional Halo machinima techniques that all of my previous Halo work was made with (using system-linked Xbox's and generating the footage with a capture card). Initially, "Alaska is Missing" was going to be a fairly-lengthy surreal movie utilizing Halo CE to the fullest (using it's ability to spawn and control characters, vehicles, and weapons in front of a green screen backdrop). I decided to drop the project mainly because my interest in Halo as a filming engine was waning. After the whole Microsoft "Game Content Usage Rules" fiasco I (somewhat reluctantly) decided that I'd be better of creating work that I knew for a fact was mine in its entirety. This is the last piece of work I made with Halo and I have no plans at this point of going back (but never say never, right?)

Six Russian warrior planes were caught by American and Canadian planes off the bank of Alaska on Wednesday, US resistance authorities have affirmed. They entered what is known as the Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ), however did not enter US air space. The planes, two of which were Mig 31 planes, left the territory without occurrence. Authorities said this sort of occurrence was not phenomenal, and happens up to 10 times each year. Two Alaskan-based F-22 warrior planes and two Canadian CF-18 contender planes were mixed to capture the Russian planes in two different episodes on Wednesday night and Thursday morning. Additionally on Wednesday, the Swedish Foreign Ministry said two Russian military flying machine had crossed into Swedish air space south of the Baltic Sea island of Oland. The service called it a "genuine infringement". One of the least restrictive countries in the world. Forming a land mass approximately the size of Alaska, Peru is home to just over thirty million people and borders Colombia, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile and Equador in the heart of South America, with a stretching coastline onto the South Pacific Ocean. The capital city is Lima. The national has been known to battle internal poverty rates, while poor infrastructure has hindered growth to the inland areas. However, Peru has sustained economic growth over the last ten years, while reducing government debt by more than half . President Ollanta Humala Tasso is maintaining the market orientated economic policies of preceding administrations, and the nation is becoming increasingly present in the global market. Since two thousand six, it has formed important strategic trade deals with the US, Canada, EU, and nations in Asian and South America, including its membership in the Pacific Alliance. The US-Peru Trade Promotion Agreement came into force in two thousand nine, creating important investment and trade between the two nations. The country is full of high potential sectors, including energy, transportation, tourism and agriculture. It’s stable and modern legal framework provides protection for foreign and national investment, and the economy has seen an average of six point four percent of growth each year. The extractive sector in particular has seen a rise in private investment, and accounts for over sixty percent of Peru’s exports. Peru’s abundant natural resources and range of climates are reflected in the economy, with global market participation in mining, agriculture, textiles, and energy. It is naturally bestowed with an arid lowland coastal region, tropical lands, and mountain ranges holding important mineral resources and many business opportunities.

A series of life changes prompted her to pack up her life and move her family to Alaska in order to be more in touch with herself and to reconnect with the culture she missed growing up. Here in this living Museum of the artic, the elders of the village Preserve knowlege of this endangered culture To share with visitors who get an unusual Opportunity to observe the native culture. More important, in the museum the elders Have created a vital ongoing school to pass Their wisdom about their own world to the Youth of the culture. The interest of the young People show that there is a broad based support for keeping this culture alive. (susan erlick talking about food) ever since admiral perry, the people of the lower 48 have been learning that the eskimo approach is Uniquely suited to a unique environment. These Hand made parkas trap body heat and provide Ventilation. And the blanket toss , which is now a Lively game , served a real survival need in a Predominantly flat land with no hills or trees For vantage points. Hunters were tossed up as Many as thirty feet into the air , allowing them To survey the terrain and spot game in the distance. This eskimo version of the ladder served a purpose and worked. The imported technology doesn't always work as well as the time tested ways in this Environmentally sensitive land. Here we see a house, Which must be fitted with an active refrigeration System to keep it from melting the permafrost beneath it and sinking into the ground. Like the tundra around it,the culture of these hardy People is a fragile and sensitive thing. Tundra , Once scarred, remains scarred forever. These people Know that they are trying to reverse an historical Trend by refusing to change the basic elements of Their culture , but they feel that it is worth the effort. they know that they are survivors but they don't Just want to survive, they want to survive with dignity and joy. A statement from Anchorage police later said officers were investigating "reports of the illegal sale of marijuana and other derivatives" at the clubhouse. Tara Young / ADN Anchorage police served a search warrant on the Alaska Cannabis Club's downtown clubhouse on Friday afternoon, taking boxes of evidence from the residence as club owner Charlo Greene watched. Police arrest suspect in Alaska for Maryland double murder

Police have arrested a suspect on a cruise ship in Alaska and charged him with a double murder after he confessed to killing a Maryland couple found slain on Mother’s Day, police said Sunday. Montgomery County police announced Scott Tomaszewski, 31, of Rockville, Maryland, was arrested Saturday in Juneau, Alaska, based on a warrant from Maryland. Tomaszewski was on a cruise ship docked in Juneau. Richard Vilardo and Julianne Vilardo were found dead at their home by a relative on May 10. Police said an autopsy confirmed the couple was stabbed to death. Tomaszewski was a neighbor of the Vilardos. What It's Like To Live In Alaska

Fun fact: it's not cold all the time. I was born and raised in Fairbanks, Alaska, which means my non-Alaska-born peers often find this fascinating. (Understandable. It's a pretty dope state.) Caitlin, who's been my close friend since college, once humorously noted how she has heard people ask me this question dozens and dozens of times: "What's it like to live in ALASKA??" So while visiting my homeland of Fairbanks, Alaska last year, my friend Caitlin Cowie and my sister Julie Barsi and I decided to make this video. We thought it'd be a fun way to share both the epic and quirky things we love about "the last frontier." We went to all our favorite hometown spots and even trekked to the nearest hot springs and, of course, to Denali National Park. Oscar Anderson was an early Anchorage resident, said to be the 18th person to set foot on the area and his house, built in 1915 was the first wood-frame house in Anchorage. The Glacier Brewhouse is both a brewery and one of Anchorage's top restaurants. The place gets busy early so it is a good idea to make reservations. Aside from rotisserie meats the menu features lots of fresh local seafood. And who ever had fresh raspberry whet beer? The brewhouse was brewing it and it was delicious. Alaska glacier bottled water is a great way to taste the purity of the environment around Anchorage. This bottled water is a popular drink for Asians who visit and refer glaciers. Although there were rave reviews about the seafood chowder and the calamari, I tried the pita with hummus which was a great appetizer that went well with the raspberry wheat beer. One can't be in Alaska without tasting king crab legs. The fresh version is more spectacular than the deep freeze version we get in the lower 48. Alaskan halibut also shines over their southern neighbors and at Glacier Brewhouse they serve it with a healthy balsamic salad and a not so healthy side of fries. A popular street food are reindeer hot dogs which are actually a blend of pork sausage and reindeer. I didn't taste it but I understand it is a must try, unless you are Santa Claus. There are lots of tourist shops selling made in China souvenirs but if you want something that is truly Alaskan and unique, The Oomingmak Qiviut shop is an Alaskan native cooperative that produces Muskox products. It is owned by approximately 250 Native Alaskan women from remote coastal villages of Alaska who knit each item by hand. Each village has a signature pattern derived from traditional aspects of village life and the Eskimo culture; they may come from an ancient artifact or a beadwork design. The name Musk Ox is deceiving, as the animal does not produce musk, nor is it related to cattle. Skeletal and behavioral studies show a closer relationship to sheep and goats Qiviut is shed naturally each year during the spring months. About 40 miles south of Anchorage is the Alyeska ski resort -- even in May there is abundant snow -- although skiers were not about. It has an average of 643" of annual snowfall and is known for its steep terrain. For off piste skiing - Chugach Powder Guides operate snowcat or helicopter adventure in the world-famous Chugach Mountain Range. Helicopters guarantee 16 - 20,000 vertical feet of skiing per day. The cost $1125 per person. If that price is unbearable ... the normal day ski lift pass is $60 for an adult. Not far from Alyeska is Portage and the home of the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center. The center takes in injured and orphaned animals and many who cannot be released into the wild are given a permanent home at the center. Snickers, the porcupine is one such creature that was raised in a home and has a lot of personality .. so much so that a youtube video featuring him with almost 1.8 million views. (youtube.com/watch?v=U5I5H7EeC8k) The center had recently taken in three orphaned moose calves who keep the four-year old moose Jack company. Jack had arrived at the center as a 3-day old moose with bite marks and a broken leg .. and a 20% chance of survival. Muskox who's warm fur is used in making Qiviut products are an arctic survivor. Their thick coat grows up to 36 inches long. The wood bison were extinct from Alaska until they were reintroduced in 2003. They are the largest land animal in North America. Bears are also residents at the center including brown bears, black bears and a grizzly bear. Heading south toward the coastal town of Whittier brings one to the Whittier tunnel. This is the longest combined railroad car tunnel in North America and connects the commuters between the Prince William Sound and Turnagain Arm. The tunnel opened in 1943. Whittier is home to lots of sea life from birds, to sea otters, seals, whales, and sea lions. In 1964 a 9.2 magnitude earthquake (the largest ever recorded in North America) generated a major tectonic tsunami. The waves destroyed Girdwood and Portage and evidence of the damage today is still visible from the dead wood forests in the area.
