Plot
Seven pals decide to take a few days'holidays to free up the time necessary to pull three enormous pranks. Their aim is to ridicule three established bodies: the army, the church and the administration. Quite arbitrarily, they set their hearts on two peaceful sub-prefectures, Ambert and Issoire. Broudier, disguised as a government minister, turns up at the barracks, demands and obtains the organization of night maneuvers. The following day, Bénin, dressed up as a reverend, preaches in the cathedral of Issoire a sermon against the precepts of the Church. As for Lesueur, he disturbs the inauguration of the statue of Vercingétorix by an MP. But the holidays are over. The seven of them can'r part without a last joke...

Conversation with Erika Allen, National Projects Director for Growing Power, Inc hosted by the Food Justice Network, a partnership between FoodShare Toronto and Food Secure Canada. We talked about the importance of dismantling racism and oppression in our food systems in order to create a food system that is just and equitable for all. Growing Power is a US acclaimed non-profit organization and land trust providing equal access to healthy, high-quality, safe, and affordable food, especially in underserved communities, and also a leader in challenging systems of oppression in our food systems. Erika Allen is a social change artist, with a focus on dismantling racism and the related healing and understanding of how structural oppression impacts society. Her practice for the last 20 years has focused on community based transformation through the food system and integration of visual and installations of urban farms that integrate food, culture, spirit and the arts. Her art practice is multi-disciplinary and manifests outside of a traditional art world context, more akin to the practical arts of West Africa and folk artists who are earth and nature based. She integrates farms, spirit groves, edible landscapes, earth shaping and sporadic installations and small and large scale painted works, often integrating text rifts and recurring visual iconography as pattern and texture. As part of this work she is a student of IFA and collects/recovers Traditional Yoruba, Igbo, Benin, Akan, Congolese, Dagon and Haitian art as a key to her arts practice and recovery from historic oppression and displacement of ancestral memory and traditions. Allen earned her BFA from the School of the Art Institute in 1992 and MA in art psychotherapy from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2000. As Chicago and National Projects Director for Growing Power, Inc., Ms. Allen has integrated creative and therapeutic techniques with food security and community development enabling her to develop nine urban agriculture and food system projects and impact policy in Chicago. She also facilitates the planning and visioning of similar projects for clients from a broad spectrum of backgrounds and environments. She actively works to create healthy and diverse food options in urban-city and rural communities.

Through the use of dance, music, painting, sculpture, artisanal work, ceremony and healing arts women are represented as nurturers and creators of world we live in. Artwork created by women is an act of hope, as the creation of beauty or artwork is healing for spirit and creates the symbolic language of the world we live in. In visiting countries around the world I have seen the innumerable ways that women create and preserve folkloric culture and how they also go unseen, silent and unrecognized for all the life that they nurture. In many places it is the women who create; sewing the blankets, clothes and baskets, prepare the food, sing the traditional songs and dances, teach their children the mother language and create the place and space many would call home. For many political, economic and even religious reasons, women across the world are not valued and recognized for the creative work that they do. Women are and always have been mothers, nurturers, teachers, healers and creators of beauty and hope. Through their creative work in so many realms, women support the preservation of diversity and folkloric traditions as well as culture itself. The concept of home can be an illusive one in an everchanging, increasingly complex multicultural world. Home itself is land, it is a culture, a people, a way of living and a feeling. It is through the creation of art that one can understand the meaning of culture, culture itself being a human creation. Art becomes the universal language through which one can understand the diversity of cultures and peoples around the world. Through a unifying strength of spirit women can find hope not only in their own culture but in the collective culture of all women. There is beauty in experiencing the support of the larger world community, in a feeling of interconnectedness and solidarity, and in compassion as women in different places all over the world are able to empathize with their shared experiences. Beauty can be found in the creation of art as women create work that reflects both their hopes and cultures. In recognizing the creative work of women around the world one can experience the strength of spirit that continues to create beauty with hope of new life.

The World Health Organization, in its latest estimate, says the disease caused seven hundred eighty-one thousand deaths in two thousand nine. Most of those deaths were in children in Africa. Worldwide there were two hundred twenty-five million cases of malaria. Both of these numbers represent improvements. In two thousand there were an estimated two hundred thirty-three million cases of malaria and almost a million deaths. ''Malaria remains a major problem in Africa, but there have been some successes. Deaths in Rwanda, for example, have been reduced by sixty percent. There are still no vaccines to prevent malaria. The main way for communities to control the disease is by controlling mosquitoes. In a recent study, researchers in West Africa have shown that spraying insecticide indoors can greatly reduce malaria transmission. The fight against malaria has two main targets: the parasite itself and the mosquito that carries the parasite. Insecticides target the mosquito. But over time the insects develop resistance to the chemicals. This has been happening with current mosquito killers, including chemicals known as pyrethroids. Gil Germain Padonou and other researchers in Benin tested another insecticide. This one is called bendiocarb. They tested it with indoor spraying at sites throughout Benin. There were fewer mosquito bites in homes sprayed with bendiocarb. More importantly, none of the three hundred fifty-thousand people who lived there got malaria-infected mosquito bites during the test.Peter Hotez heads the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, which published the research. He says, "This is what this bendiocarb is all about, showing that it's efficacious -- at least in this setting in Benin, in a real, live field setting. So it provides a potentially good alternative where there's been high development of resistance to pyrethroids." Dr. Hotez says the effectiveness in the test does not mean all malaria programs should use bendiocarb, or that indoor spraying should be the only method used. "We're going to have to throw multiple things out there in order to see what the optimal combination is to achieve control." ''Bendiocarb is widely used against a number of different insects. But relying on cast-off chickens is putting local farmers out of work and posing serious health risks. In Benin, 150,000 tonnes of foreign poultry passes through the main port every year. For the countries of origin, it is a convenient way to offload tough old hens. While for the people of Benin, the cheap and widely available chicken is a welcome source of meat. "Laying hens are a bit tough for European tastes", says importer Kenneth Adiho, "but we love them". However, the imported meat has dealt a heavy blow to local farmers. Once a profession for young entrepreneurs, Agriculture is now doomed. "The importing of frozen chicken is killing the youth and they will react by flocking to the Western world", predicts one out-of-work farmer. In a country where nearly 50% are under 15 this could have serious implications. Moreover, defrosted, exposed to sunlight, and then refrozen, the poultry risks being infected by bacteria that can cause diseases like salmonella. There is yet to be a national survey on the dangers of the meat and in the markets sanitation inspections rarely take place. The Dream Studios, venue of the final and Lagos leg of the on-going nationwide auditions of the Nigerian Idol season 5 will this weekend be a beehive of entertainment activities and the centre of attraction to thousands of youths who will all be gathered for the three-day auditions. The Lagos auditions is coming after the organisers and franchise owners, OMG, successfully concluded similar ones in the ancient city of Benin, Port Harcourt, the FCT, Abuja and Ibadan within the last one month. Informed commentators on happenings in the entertainment arena are anticipating stiff competition among the contestants given the position of the state as Nigeria’s entertainment capital. It is estimated to attract a larger number of contestants, all vying for places among the 100 best contestants to be pooled from the auditions. The auditions will be directed by the three celebrity judges on the Nigerian Idol season 5, renowned Afrobeat sensation, Dede Mabiaku, Vocalist Yinka Davies and R’n’ B crooner, Dare ‘Art’ Alade with Show anchorman, Illrhymz. It will also feature live performances by some of the past winners. Music talents at the auditions are expected to go through a multi-layered screening process beginning with opening registration of participants on the first day followed thereafter by the first round of screening to determine the most outstanding talents from the lot who will then make scheduled appearances before the judges on the second and third day in batches. The Lagos auditions holding from February 7 to 9will mark the conclusion of the month-long nationwide campaign which took of January 10 in the ancient city of Benin in Edo State. Nigerian Idol is in its fifth season after a successful debut in 2010 won by Yeka Onka. In the following years which saw the emergence of Mercy Chinwo, Moses Adigwe and Zebili Evelyn (Evelle), it has grown in popularity and followership on the basis of the unique platforms it offers to young Nigerians with exceptional music talent. It is the only music TV reality show in Nigeria with a global appeal that currently cuts across 46 countries. Nigerian Idol focuses on discovering Nigerian youths with talent in music and giving them a unique platform to take shots at stardom. The eventual winner goes home with N7.5 million cash reward, a brand new car, a recording deal worth N7.5 million and some high-end devices. NEW JERSEY — A man died of Lassa fever in New Jersey on Monday after returning from Liberia earlier this month. The man reportedly travelled from Liberia to Morocco and arrived at John F. Kennedy International Airport on May 17, the New York Times reported. He developed a sore throat, fever and fatigue the next day and visited a hospital in New Jersey. His condition worsened on May 21 and he tested positive for Lassa fever on Monday. He died that evening. The Lassa virus is transmitted to humans by food or household items contaminated with rodent urine or faeces. The virus spreads among humans through direct contact with the blood, urine, faeces or other bodily fluids of a person infected with Lassa fever, according to the World Health Organization. Lassa fever is endemic in Benin, Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone and parts of Nigeria but it is probably present in other West African countries as well, says the World Health Organization. Then there are the stilt villages, home to thousands in the southern lagoons, and the northern tata somba (fortlike mud huts) built by the insular Somba people. From November 18th to the 20th, the pope will visit the country of Benin to meet with African bishops. Two years ago, their Synod took place. So, during his visit, the pope plans to deliver the post Synodal exhortation to the group, which it use as a guide in the coming years. During his visit, the pope will celebrate the 150th anniversary of Benin's evangelization. He will also honor the life and work of local cardinal Bernardin Gantin, who served as the Dean of the College of Cardinals for much of John Paul II's pontificate. Benin (formerly, Dahomey), officially the Republic of Benin, is a country in West Africa. It borders Togo to the west, Nigeria to the east and Burkina Faso and Niger to the north. Its small southern coastline on the Bight of Benin is where a majority of the population is located. The capital of Benin is Porto-Novo, but the seat of government is located in the country's largest city of Cotonou. Benin covers an area of approximately 110,000 square kilometers (42,000 sq mi), with a population of approximately 9.05 million. Benin is a tropical, sub-Saharan nation, highly dependent on agriculture, with substantial employment and income arising from subsistence farming. The official language of Benin is French, however, indigenous languages such as Fon and Yoruba are commonly spoken. The largest religious group in Benin is Roman Catholicism, followed closely by Muslims, Vodun, and Protestants. Benin is a member of the United Nations, the African Union, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, South Atlantic Peace and Cooperation Zone, La Francophonie, the Community of Sahel-Saharan States, the African Petroleum Producers Association and the Niger Basin Authority. From the 17th century to the 19th century, the land of current-day Benin was ruled by the Kingdom of Dahomey. The region became known as the Slave Coast during the early 17th century due to the prevalence of the trans-Atlantic slave trade. In 1892, with the slave trade banned and regional power diminishing, France took over the area and renamed it French Dahomey. In 1960, Dahomey gained full independence from France, bringing in a democratic government for the next 12 years. Between 1972 and 1990, a self-proclaimed Marxist-Leninist dictatorship called the People's Republic of Benin existed, ushering in a period of repression which ultimately led to an economic collapse. Formation of the Republic of Benin occurred in 1991, bringing in multiparty elections.

After my bout with malaria in Togo, I pushed across to the country of Benin. On my way to the capital of Benin, I made a stop at the historical town of Ouidah. Here in Ouidah, the slave trade was once the largest form of industry. Slaves would be taken in to town on boat, and then forced to walk the last couple miles to the sea where they would be picked up and shipped out. Ouidah too is meant to have a strong voodoo history. In this episode of It's my Life 365, I stopped in at the Ouidah Museum for a look into that history, but to be honest I was a little bit disapointed with the museum. I was hoping for it to have more to talk about in regards to the Voodoo culture in Benin. Anyways, I end the day in the capital of Benin: Cotonou. For us Ganvie was a short drive north from Cotonou and a stop for several hours for a pirogue ride from shore to the stilt village, a boat trip on which we saw plenty of fishermen and hundreds of small boats carrying people back and forth between the village and the mainland, most human-powered. The term "stilt village" conjured up certain images in my mind from previous travels, specifically those of a stilt village I visited in Phan Nga Bay in Thailand in 1996, images that naively led me to ask Dave before we got to Ganvie, "Will we have a chance to get out and walk around in the stilt village?" I soon discovered the answer was "No". Whereas in Thailand I visited a very large densely-populated village where homes and businesses were all connected above the water by virtual wooden streets, in Ganvie the individual houses were widely separated, no more than a few dwellings per cluster, and boats the only means of transport between the clusters. We made a few stops at shops where healthy doses of tourist tack were made available for our shopping convenience, but this being West Africa even the most touristy of sights was far from overrun by commercialism, making for a very pleasant afternoon excursion." It is bordered by Togo to the west, by Nigeria to the east and by Burkina Faso and Niger to the north. A majority of the population live on its small southern coastline on the Bight of Benin, part of the Gulf of Guinea in the northernmost tropical portion of the Atlantic Ocean. The capital of Benin is Porto-Novo, but the seat of government is in Cotonou, the country's largest city and economic capital. Benin covers an area of approximately 115,000 square kilometers (42,000 sq mi), with a population of approximately 9.98 million. Benin is a tropical, sub-Saharan nation, highly dependent on agriculture, with substantial employment and income arising from subsistence farming. The official language of Benin is French. However, indigenous languages such as Fon and Yoruba are commonly spoken. The largest religious group in Benin is Roman Catholicism, followed closely by Islam, Vodun and Protestantism. Benin is a member of the United Nations, the African Union, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, South Atlantic Peace and Cooperation Zone, La Francophonie, the Community of Sahel-Saharan States, the African Petroleum Producers Association and the Niger Basin Authority. From the 17th to the 19th century, the main political entities in the area were the Kingdom of Dahomey along with the city-state of Porto-Novo and a large area with many different tribes to the north. This region was referred to as the Slave Coast from as early as the 17th century due to the large number of slaves shipped to the New World during the Trans-Atlantic slave trade. After slavery was abolished, France took over the country and renamed it French Dahomey. In 1960, Dahomey gained full independence from France, and had a tumultuous period with many different democratic governments, many military coups and military governments. A Marxist-Leninist state called the People's Republic of Benin existed between 1972 and 1990. In 1991, it was replaced by the current multi-party Republic of Benin. The capital's name Porto-Novo is of Portuguese origin meaning "New Port." It was originally developed as a port for the slave trade. The current country of Benin combines three areas which had different political and ethnic systems prior to French colonial control. Before 1700, there were a few important city states along the coast (primarily of the Aja ethnic group, but also including Yoruba and Gbe peoples) and a mass of tribal regions inland (composed of Bariba, Mahi, Gedevi, and Kabye peoples). The Oyo Empire, located primarily to the east of modern Benin, was the most significant large-scale military force in the region and it would regularly conduct raids and exact tribute from the coastal kingdoms and the tribal regions. The situation changed in the 1600s and early 1700s as the Kingdom of Dahomey, which was of the Fon ethnicity, was founded on the Abomey plateau and began taking over areas along the coast. By 1727, king Agaja of the Kingdom of Dahomey had conquered the coastal cities of Allada and Whydah, but it had become a tributary of the Oyo empire and did not directly attack the Oyo allied city-state of Porto-Novo. The rise of the kingdom of Dahomey, the rivalry between the kingdom and the city of Porto-Novo, and the continued tribal politics of the northern region. This ethnic and political division persisted into the colonial and post-colonial periods. The Dahomey Kingdom was known for its culture and traditions. Young boys were often apprenticed to older soldiers, and taught the kingdom's military customs until they were old enough to join the army. Dahomey was also famous for instituting an elite female soldier corps, called Ahosi i.e. the king's wives or Mino, "our mothers" in the Fon language Fongbe, and known by many Europeans as the Dahomean Amazons. This emphasis on military preparation and achievement earned Dahomey the nickname of "black Sparta" from European observers and 19th century explorers like Sir Richard Burton.
