How to remove unwanted interwiki links from the main page[edit]

Put the magic word {{noexternallanglinks}} in the source code of the main page. It is described in detail here. Like other magic words, it can be translated here (choose "magic words"). --Njardarlogar (talk) 11:02, 9 March 2013 (UTC)

List of wikis for which this should be done[edit]

The following wikis intentionally limit the number of interwiki links on their main pages, which I feel should be taken as grounds to add {{noexternallanglinks}}. This excludes wikis with no interwiki links listed, or links that have been maintained in a semi-random fashion by bots, as neither of these really shows a community consensus one way or the other; they can of course adjust accordingly in the future if they so choose. This is just an effort to fix things on the wikis where it's obviously wanted, so we have less people trying to remove links from this item.

(Less than halfway through, but I'm just gonna leave these here for the time being. I'll post on a noticeboard or two when I'm done with this whole thing, though if people want to get a head start on these, please do!)

As you can see, I've done this myself in wikis where I had the technical capability. However, in some cases the relevant page is fully protected, and in some it's semi-protected and I'm not yet autoconfirmed on the wiki, so if users with the applicable rights could handle these, that'd be great. — PinkAmpers&(Je vous invite à me parler) 23:00, 9 March 2013 (UTC)

OUPS...[edit]

I did a mistake ! I removed a few collumms on the board. -- Robby2-Darcoland (talk) 18:30, 18 March 2013 (UTC)

Don't worry, not so damaging. I restored links. --Stryn (talk) 18:36, 18 March 2013 (UTC)
Thank you very much, and sorry. -- Robby2-Darcoland (talk) 17:52, 20 March 2013 (UTC)

Order; no edit rights[edit]

Would someone please sort the languages according to the depth of Wikipedias, but by always keeping the following ones at the top with this order (en: fr: de: it: el:), the rest sorted by their depth. You can ignore listing the Wikipedias with less than 10 thousand articles. At the end of the list link to the rest of Wikipedias with that phrase (باقى اللغات). Thanks. --Mahmudmasri (talk) 10:20, 8 June 2013 (UTC)

It's not possible to change the order of interwiki links. They are always in alphabetical order. And this is not even correct place to ask it. --Stryn (talk) 10:50, 8 June 2013 (UTC)

Edit war[edit]

Looks like here is an edit war about should we add aa-wiki here. It's not active wiki anymore, but still exists. Any thoughts should we include closed wikis also? Same with mh-wiki which is closed, and currently not included on this item. --Stryn (talk) 07:20, 6 July 2013 (UTC)

The main page has no content; regular users cannot even view the source code. It seems pretty evident to me that it should not be included. It's not a real page. --Njardarlogar (talk) 09:30, 6 July 2013 (UTC)
Without the link "List of values is complete." will be disappeared so I guess we shouldn't remove but I think this should be discussed that do we really need closed wikis links on Wikidata? –ebraminiotalk 05:26, 28 October 2013 (UTC)
If someone really cares about aawiki, or any of the other closed projects, then this page could be directing him to the correct spot in the Incubator.

Item Q5296 description[edit]

Should the description maybe read "main page of a localized Wikipedia version", to underline that all linked pages talk about somewhat different things, and this is more of a meta-item ? --Pixelpapst (talk) 11:30, 7 July 2013 (UTC)

Should those things really be the same kind of entity? Seems to me this "item" is more of a disambiguation page with links to different Wikipedias, rather than something that represents a real-world entity... Littledogboy (talk) 10:05, 24 July 2013 (UTC)

wikivoyage[edit]

Add wikivoyage main page please 109.151.161.64 18:31, 23 July 2013 (UTC)

Should we add Wikivoyage links to this item or make a new one for Wikivoyage main pages? Fi-wiki main page is called "Wikipedia:Etusivu", so also label is "Wikipedia:Etusivu"... --Stryn (talk) 18:51, 23 July 2013 (UTC)
Ok, I went ahead and deleted the "Wikipedia"-namespace from the Finnish label. --Stryn (talk) 22:18, 23 July 2013 (UTC)
I think we should create a new item for Wikivoyage main pages, as they describe different things. I created Q14223507, but cannot delete links here (as this page is protected), so somebody with proper permissions needs to transfer them. --Pixelpapst (talk) 06:52, 24 July 2013 (UTC)
I would say that making a new item for Wikivoyage main page is a bad idea. They both describe main pages of a Wikimedia site, and it's clear to me that if a user wanted to travel from en.WikiVoyage to en.Wikipedia, he might want to do so. This would be the way to establish that linkage. (Consider that the sidebar UI may change in the future so that one can select both a project and a language.) --Izno (talk) 21:57, 24 July 2013 (UTC)
"it's clear to me that if a user wanted to travel from en.WikiVoyage to en.Wikipedia, he might want to do so" - I disagree. Littledogboy is right above when he notes that even linking different language versions of "Main Page" together is a stretch. But at least they contain similar information ("This wikipedia has N articles." / "Featured articles today are..." etc.), so in the interest of keeping the sidebar as a convenient place to jump between language versions, I'm OK with this item's existance per se. _However_, jumping from en.wv:Main_Page to en.wp:Main_Page just is not a sensible use case, and, what's more important, this keeps us from keeping our data model clean. WD is about more than just inter-language links, it's a chance to really make the wikipedia projects part of the semantic web - if we take care to keep the data here high quality. --Pixelpapst (talk) 07:32, 25 July 2013 (UTC)
Why else would we store the IW links in the same place for every other link but the main page? It's not clear to me how that is useful. In this case, it is quite clear that these are "main pages" -> entry points for a user. And in fact, to me the use case is trivial to understand as being valuable, and it doesn't seem to tarnish the data whatsoever.
I'm not sure I see the connection to the data model. If you are obliquely referring to the fact that there are certain items currently called "Wikipedia Category" (see also WD:PC#"Wikipedia disambiguation page" and "Wikipedia category"), those are trivially changed to indicate any category without disturbing the data model.
On top of which, the interconnection of the items is certainly of higher value. Again, think of the obvious UI improvement: someone is browsing any en.wiki page and wants to jump to something with more (or sometimes less) detail, perhaps in another language or another project. For every project, it is a net gain to be able to do so. (And I can state as a fact that many of the English articles already link in some way, shape, or form to external Wikimedia projects—see the various sister-project templates.) --Izno (talk) 22:26, 25 July 2013 (UTC)
We need to expand the sphere of Wikivoyage by adding more languages here. I want to create Bn.Wikivoyage page. How can I do so?
               Thanks

lot of Wikisource main pages missing[edit]

Please add the missing Wikisource main pages. Currently there are 33 of them, there should be 64 according to Special:SiteMatrix. Thanks, Candalua (talk) 09:57, 15 January 2014 (UTC)

I gave you confirmed, so you should be able to now. --Rschen7754 10:04, 15 January 2014 (UTC)

Thanks. All done now. I skipped ang and ht because they are closed wikis; all other 62 are there. Candalua (talk) 10:18, 15 January 2014 (UTC)

Haitian also added. Anglo-Saxon looks hadn't creat main page so... This item will also useful for Incubator's Importers while both can be re-opened, and per Vogone's comment in the early archive.--Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 05:00, 16 January 2014 (UTC)

Qáfar Wikipedia (again)[edit]

Many defunct projects are listed here.
Is that intentional, or just an oversight? Varlaam (talk) 05:34, 28 August 2014 (UTC)

@Varlaam: IMO, we should start an RFC for the Notabilities of these closed wikis. My suggestion on this problem: Symbol oppose vote.svg Oppose excluding closed wikis ONLY on this item, Symbol support vote.svg Support (aka strongly discourage) for other items. --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 06:56, 28 August 2014 (UTC)
I have never started an RFC actually. What virtue do you see in keeping them around? If you follow them, you do get to the discussion of their closing which tends to have been in 2007 or 2008.
That is of interest to the more experienced editor, I suppose, but to the typical user, it misleads him about the number of projects which exist.
Muscogee was closed in 2007. It would never be opened nowadays.

Subclass of Emmanuel NKUSI[edit]

Somehow, in this edit, the link text "home page" got replaced by "Emmanuel NKUSI". What is that and where is that text coming from? - dcljr (talk) 00:39, 2 December 2014 (UTC)

I can't figure it out. In this edit, User:Emmankusi added that text, and supposedly it was removed in this undo, which seems impossible because that undo was for another user's edit, and somehow one undo reverted two edits by two separate users. That undo should not have been possible. It worked well enough to change the label on Q11439 on the page itself but not on this page or on Q16059613, yet somehow it is changed under similar circumstances on Q9732903. Weird... I can't help answer the question but I'll ping the development team with the above provided as some extra background info. --Haplology (talk) 00:58, 2 December 2014 (UTC)
Old revisions (and diffs) are cached, that's why the wrong label got caught up there. Purging the old revision fixed it. Cheers, Hoo man (talk) 01:17, 2 December 2014 (UTC)
Ha, I've also {{subst:uw-vand1}} him, but it means "I undid one or more of his recent contributions", which should be User:Gymel. --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 09:09, 4 December 2014 (UTC)
