The statue, which stands in the Alexander Gardens, was commissioned to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Alexander's troops marching into Paris following their triumph over Napolean's Grand Armée's attempt to invade Russia in 1812, known in Russia as the Patriotic War of 1812. Assisted by Prussian and Austrian forces, the capture of Paris led to Napolean's abdication in the Treaty of Fontainebleau in April of 1814. During his speech, Putin spoke of how winning the war became a "worldwide triumph of Russia." Also present at the unveiling ceremony were Moscow Mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, Russian Culture Minister Vladimir Medinsky and Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, who blessed the statue. The monument was designed by renown sculptor Salavat Shcherbakov, who is a recognised People’s Artist of Russia.
