Overview of the EUROCONTROL Network Management Operations
EUROCONTROL has been nominated as 'Network Manager' and will now seek the approval of its member states to take on that role.
The Network Manager will:
- monitor, report and forecast the performance of the European ATM network based on the agreed performance targets;
- act as a central unit for air traffic flow management across Europe;
- ensure the European airspace can accommodate the additional capacity needs and seamlessly integrates airports into the network;
- give Member States and partners access to common resources;
- and support the deployment of technological improvements across the European ATM network.
The nomination of EUROCONTROL as Network Manager will enable the establishment of common procedures for the design, planning and management of the European ATM Network, ensuring the efficient and safe performance of air traffic management.

The EUROCONTROL Maastricht Upper Area Control Centre (MUAC)'s story begins back in the sixties, when air travel started to become very popular as a result of mass tourism and business travel.
MUAC was established as part of a broader pan-European vision to create a number of similar facilities across the continent to ensure a common, consolidated and more efficient approach to the provision of air traffic control services, in order to meet the needs of the newly thriving aviation industry. What was required was an interoperable control system which transcended national borders. These were the very first steps towards the objectives of the Single European Sky.

EUROCONTROL is the European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation. Founded in 1963, it is an international organisation working for seamless, pan-European air traffic management. EUROCONTROL is a civil organisation and currently has 39 member states; its headquarters are in Haren, City of Brussels.
EUROCONTROL coordinates and plans air traffic control for all of Europe. This involves working with national authorities, air navigation service providers, civil and military airspace users, airports, and other organizations. Its activities involve all gate-to-gate air navigation service operations: strategic and tactical flow management, controller training, regional control of airspace, safety-proofed technologies and procedures, and collection of air navigation charges.
EUROCONTROL provides a set of different services:
EUROCONTROL's Maastricht Upper Area Control Centre (MUAC), located at Maastricht Aachen Airport, provides air traffic control for traffic above 24,500 ft over Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and north-west Germany. A DFS unit, controlling military air traffic over the north-west of Germany, is co-located with the civil facilities. It started operations in 1972.

A selection procedure is currently underway to find suitable candidates for the student air traffic controller training which is scheduled to start in March 2017.
Being safety critical, the job carries a high level of responsibility, so the selection procedure is rigorous and the training is intensely challenging. But if you succeed, you will have an enormously rewarding and interesting career.

MUAC was established as part of a broader pan-European vision to create a number of similar facilities across the continent to ensure a common, consolidated and more efficient approach to the provision of air traffic control services, in order to meet the needs of the newly thriving aviation industry. What was required was an interoperable control system which transcended national borders. These were the very first steps towards the objectives of the Single European Sky.
