JAIPUR: An eight-year-old girl fell into a borewell while she was playing at her family's agricultural farm in Rajasthan's Sikar district on Saturday.
The girl is believed to be stuck at 30 feet in the 400-feet deep borewell. The Army has been roped in to rescue the girl.
According to police, it happened around 8 am on Saturday. The girl has been identified as Sunita Kumari. Her father Rudaram had got the borewell dug up at his farm a few days ago. He had covered it with a bolder.
Sunita was playing near the borewell. An eyewitness said that she got tired and sat on the boulder. The stone got displaced and she fell into the borewell. A tractor driver saw her falling into it. He told her family members and the police.
The district collector LN Soni, SP Akhilesh Kumar and other police and district administration officers reached the spot. The rescue operation began with help of three earth-moving machines.
An Army team was also called to the spot from Alwar. "We are trying to rescue the girl. She is alive. We are trying to dig up a parallel hole to reach the girl. We fear that she might sink deeper," said a police officer.
Incidents of children falling into open borewells are reported quite frequently in the state.
