50 Days Later: Hodges Dodges Naked Run

It’s the question on everyone’s lips:

A full 50 days after Dan Hodges lost his bet that UKIP wouldn’t poll above 6%, we still haven’t seen him in his birthday suit.

“I have to fill in a form, and then get synched with a couple of people’s diaries,” Dan protests.

Don’t make Guido dust off his chicken suit…

People’s Assembly Inflated Protest Figures Last Year As Well

The People’s Assembly Against Austerity’s spurious claim that 250,000 people attended their protest in London did not stand up to scrutiny when Guido investigated earlier this week. The real number was closer to 25,000.

It turns out this isn’t the first time these lefties have had a problem with numbers. After the 2014 People’s Assembly protest – which was significantly smaller than this year’s event – Owen Jones appeared on the BBC to demand they give more coverage to the “50,000” people on the march:

50,000 was the number press released by the People’s Assembly.

If this year’s event only had 25,000 people attending, how could 50,000 have turned up to last year’s smaller event?

The Socialist Worker report on the 2014 protest has the answer: the real number was much lower than Owen claimed.

“Up to 20,000 people marched against austerity in central London today, Saturday, in a loud and lively protest called by the People’s Assembly.”

More people turn up to watch Sheffield United play Walsall…

Dave’s Dossier: Deal or No Deal?

EU REFORM

If today’s extensive leak is accurate, this is what the PM is seeking from EU leaders as his renegotiation deal:

  • opt out from ever closer union
  • renewed focus on competitiveness and economic growth
  • fairness between eurozone and non-eurozone members
  • restrictions on EU migrants claiming benefits

So, what do Guido readers think?

Read Dave’s demands and decide: would that be enough to win your vote to stay in?

Mili No Mates: An Occasional Series

First he was in PCH by himself.

Then alone on the slow train to Bedford.

This lunchtime Ed Miliband has been snapped by a parliamentary co-conspirator: “standing by himself in the middle of the atrium weirdly walking around. People were looking at him with the expression of ‘WTF?'”

Back to work…

Revealed: Cameron’s Demands to EU Leaders

EU REFORM

Top leak to the Guardian, revealing what the PM wants in his renegotiation deal:

  • Answering UK concerns about sovereignty by giving the UK an exemption from the EU’s historic commitment to forge an “ever closer union” of the peoples of Europe. The prime minister said the UK does not want to stop other member states from pursuing this goal but Britain needs an opt-out because the European Court of justice has used it to push through integrationist measures. He also suggested giving national parliaments the ability to club together to use yellow or red cards to block EU proposals they object to.
  • A renewed focus on competitiveness and economic growth by freeing up the service sector and promoting trade including, but not exclusively so, the EU-US transatlantic free trade agreement, which is the subject of lengthy intense negotiations.
  • Ensure fairness between eurozone and non-eurozone members to ensure that countries outside the single currency cannot have new rules in the single market imposed on them. He cited financial services and cited the example of the double majority system on the banking union. This ensures that new rules have to be agreed by a majority of eurozone and non eurozone countries.
  • Imposing restrictions on EU migrants claiming benefits. He had hoped to introduce an emergency brake but now accepts this is not possible. Cameron has been accused of planning to act in a discriminatory way after he proposed imposing a four year ban on EU migrants claiming in-work benefits.

Apparently the PM’s plan is to undermine the “risky” alternatives to staying in. Only bringing back these meagre concessions would also be quite a risk…

GCHQ Guilty of Unauthorised Spying – On Itself

gchq-always-listening-to-our-customers

GCHQ was rapped last year by the Intelligence Services Commissioner Sir Mark Waller for excessive spying on its own staff. The revelation is made today in Sir Mark’s annual report which describes the over-zealous internal monitoring at GCHQ as an “error” caused by a lack of understanding:

“In 2014, GCHQ reported one error to me which happened when an internal monitoring system of some staff communications was found to be capturing more information than it was authorised to. I followed up on this error during my May inspection and the team explained that because of a lack of understanding of the systems’ full capability more data than had been authorised had been collected.

It was clear to me that this was a technical error and not deliberate. Following the discovery of the error GCHQ deleted the captured data and reconfigured the system to ensure that it only collected the information that it was authorised to collect.”

Let’s hope the spooks don’t make any “technical errors” while they’ve hoovering up the public’s personal data…
