WADJDA is a 10-year-old girl living in a suburb of Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia. Although she lives in a conservative world, Wadjda is fun loving, entrepreneurial and always pushing the boundaries of what she can get away with. After a fight with her friend Abdullah, a neighborhood boy she shouldn't be playing with, Wadjda sees a beautiful green bicycle for sale. She wants the bicycle desperately so that she can beat Abdullah in a race. But Wadjda's mother won't allow it, fearing repercussions from a society that sees bicycles as dangerous to a girl's virtue. So Wadjda decides to try and raise the money herself. At first, Wadjda's mother is too preoccupied with convincing her husband not to take a second wife to realize what's going on. And soon enough Wadjda's plans are thwarted when she is caught running various schemes at school. Just as she is losing hope of raising enough money, she hears of a cash prize for a Koran recitation competition at her school. She devotes herself to the memorization and recitation of Koranic verses, and her teachers begin to see Wadjda as a model pious girl. The competition isn't going to be easy, especially for a troublemaker like Wadjda, but she refuses to give in. She is determined to continue fighting for her dreams...

With the death of her beloved mother, Hewan, a poster child for the successful, over-achieving immigrant, thought she was going to be able to finally bury her memories of Ethiopia. The last time Hewan had seen her father was right before he fled the military junta which had toppled the Haile Selassie regime. He was a marked man- a bone fide aristocrat, a member of the Emperor's cabinet, a well regarded diplomat. Men like Ambassador Merid didn't flee Ethiopia. But 1974 dawned a new and bloody era in Ethiopia, and caught up in what would be known as the Red Terror days was a 15-year-old Hewan, her two brothers and her mother. Now, over thirty years later, Hewan sits face-to-face with a father who never came back for the family. Ambassador Merid, still a regal and powerful personality, arrives at his daughter's house, perhaps to also put Ethiopia and his nightmares to rest. Things start to further corrode when, at a chance encounter at an art gallery, Hewn runs into the man who had tortured her during the Red Terror. Ben, a successful consultant and a single father, has moved to Los Angeles. He is intrigued by Hewan, and she doesn't fend off his flirtations. How does a woman resurrect her past demons in order to slay them? How does a man determined to keep his thorny past hidden deal with a present that was quickly unraveling? And how does a father, a scion of wealth, status and breeding, come to terms with being painstakingly humbled by the unsaid words of a daughter he had abandoned?

George Monroe is a lonely and sad man. Divorced for ten years, he lives alone on the Southern California coast with his pet dog in the same run down shack he has lived in for twenty-five years, the shack which his father passed down to him. In the intervening years, ostentatious houses have sprung up around him. He's been at the same architectural firm for twenty years in a job he hates, which primarily consists of building scale models. On the day that he is fired from his job, he is diagnosed with an advanced case of terminal cancer, which he chooses not to disclose to his family. In many ways, this day is the happiest of his recent life in that he decides to spend what little time he has left doing what he really wants to do, namely build a house he can call his own to replace the shack. He also wants his rebellious sixteen year old son, Sam Monroe, to live with him for the summer, hopefully not only to help in the house construction, but for the two to reconnect as a family. Getting Sam to do any of it will not be an easy task as Sam, who has embarked on some self-destructive behavior, would rather do anything than spend time with his family, which also includes his mother Robin Kimball, her wealthy but emotionally unaffectionate husband Peter Kimball, and their adolescent children. In Sam, George sees an unhappy person in every aspect of his life, much like George was himself before that fateful day. What Sam decides to do for the summer may consider Alyssa Beck, his pretty classmate and George's next door neighbor. Through the process, George also reconnects with Robin, who admits that she's made some pretty bad decisions in her life. He may not want that reconnection to go too far considering his health. Ultimately George has much to do to complete all he wants before he dies.

Benny, a hapless grifter, is thrown off a train after cheating at cards, and into the life of Tanya, a lovely bartender.
