Proton is a Malaysian automobile manufacturer headquartered in Subang Jaya and Shah Alam, Selangor, Malaysia, with a manufacturing plant in Tanjung Malim, Perak. Founded in 1983, it was Malaysia's only carmaker until the establishment of the secondary national carmaker, Perodua, in 1993. Its name is a Malay acronym for Perusahaan Otomobil Nasional (English: National Automobile Enterprise).
It is a core member of Proton Holdings Berhad, the holding company which is listed on Bursa Malaysia. A Majority of its equity is owned by Malaysian conglomerate DRB-HICOM, which bought a 42.74% stake in Proton Holdings for 1.291 billion ringgit ($413.1 million) from Khazanah Nasional in January 2012.
For more than two decades since its establishment, this stake was jointly owned by Mitsubishi Motors and parent Mitsubishi Corp. which each held a 7.93% stake in Proton until they sold it in March 2004. Mitsubishi disposed of its entire 15.86% stake in Proton, most of which were picked up by Khazanah Nasional, which previously owned 42.7% of Proton shares. The Mitsubishi-Proton partnership had come to an end due to a lack of technology transfer.

The proton is a subatomic particle with the symbol p or p+
and a positive electric charge of 1 elementary charge. One or more protons are present in the nucleus of each atom, along with neutrons. The number of protons in each atom is its atomic number. The name proton was given to the hydrogen nucleus by Ernest Rutherford in 1920, because in previous years he had discovered that the hydrogen nucleus (known to be the lightest nucleus) could be extracted from the nuclei of nitrogen, and was thus a candidate to be a fundamental particle and building block of all complex atomic nuclei.
In the standard model of particle physics, the proton is a hadron, composed of quarks. Prior to that model becoming a consensus in the physics community, the proton was considered a fundamental particle. A proton is composed of two up quarks and one down quark, with the rest mass of the quarks thought to contribute only about 1% of the proton's mass. The remainder of the proton mass is due to the kinetic energy of the quarks and to the energy of the gluon fields that bind them together.

The automotive industry designs, develops, manufactures, markets, and sells motor vehicles, and is one of the Earth's most important economic sectors by revenue.
The term automotive industry usually does not include industries dedicated to automobiles after delivery to the customer, such as repair shops and motor fuel filling stations.
The first practical automobile with a petrol engine was built by Karl Benz in 1885 in Mannheim, Germany. Benz was granted a patent for his automobile on 29 January 1886, and began the first production of automobiles in 1888, after Bertha Benz, his wife, had proved with the first long-distance trip in August 1888 (104 km (65 mi) from Mannheim to Pforzheim and back) that the horseless coach was absolutely suitable for daily use. Since 2008 a Bertha Benz Memorial Route commemorates this event.
Soon after, in 1889, Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach in Stuttgart designed a vehicle from scratch to be an automobile, rather than a horse-drawn carriage fitted with an engine. They also are usually credited as inventors of the first motorcycle, the Daimler Reitwagen, in 1885, but Italy's Enrico Bernardi, of the University of Padua, in 1882, patented a 0.024 horsepower (17.9 W) 122 cc (7.4 cu in) one-cylinder petrol motor, fitting it into his son's tricycle, making it at least a candidate for the first automobile, and first motorcycle. Bernardi enlarged the tricycle in 1892 to carry two adults.

There are reports Tuesday that a Malaysian car company has agreed to buy control of Britain's luxury sports car maker Lotus.
The Asian Wall Street Journal reported that Proton had reached an agreement last week to acquire an 80 per cent equity interest in Lotus for around 84 million dollars (d).
There had been speculation that South Korea's Daewoo would bid for Lotus, but negotiations reportedly fell through earlier this month.
Lotus, the troubled British car company, has inspired a generation of enthusiasts with its beautifully engineered but fragile sports cars.
But uncertainty has hung over Lotus' ownership since last year, when Italian car company Bugatti Automobili went into receivership.
Italian entrepreneur Romano Artioli bought the loss-making company from American company General Motors in 1993 and although it is now back in the black the company chief has been badly hit by the failure of his Bugatti car business.
Lotus itself said it was looking for a partner not a buyer. The company has declined to say whether the Malaysian firm has bought an 80 percent share in Lotus.
Proton in Malaysia has refused to comment either.
