The McLaren F1 GTR was a racing variant of the McLaren F1 sports car first produced in 1995 for grand touring style racing, such as the BPR Global GT Series, FIA GT Championship, JGTC, and British GT Championship. It is most famous for its overall victory at the 1995 24 Hours of Le Mans where it won against faster purpose-built prototypes. McLaren F1 GTRs raced internationally until 2005 when the final race chassis was retired.
Gordon Murray, creator of the McLaren F1, originally saw his creation as the ultimate road car, with no intention to take the car racing. Although the car used many racing technologies and designs, it was felt that the car should be a road car first, without any intent built into the creation of the car to modify it into a racing car.
However soon after the launch of the McLaren F1, the BPR Global GT Series was created. Starting in the 1994 season, the series featured racing modifications of sports cars such as the Venturi 600LM, Ferrari F40, and Porsche 911 Turbo. Viewed as a possible replacement for the defunct World Sportscar Championship, major manufacturers were taking interest in the series. At the same time, teams were also looking for faster and more capable cars for the series top class, GT1. Many teams, such as those run by Ray Bellm and Thomas Bscher, seeing the potential in the McLaren F1 road cars, turned to Gordon Murray in an attempt to convince him to offer factory backing on racing versions for the BPR series.
The McLaren F1 is a supercar designed and manufactured by McLaren Cars. Originally a concept conceived by Gordon Murray, he convinced Ron Dennis to back the project and engaged Peter Stevens to design the exterior and interior of the car. On 31 March 1998, it set the record for the world's fastest production car, reaching 231 mph (372 km/h) with the rev limiter enabled, and 242.8 mph (390.7 km/h) with the rev limiter removed. The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 beat it in 2005 with a top speed of 253.81 mph (408.47 km/h) according to Top Gear.
The car features numerous proprietary designs and technologies; it is lighter and has a more streamlined structure than many modern sports cars, despite having one seat more than most similar sports cars, with the driver's seat located in the centre (and slightly forward) of two passengers' seating positions, providing driver visibility superior to that of a conventional seating layout. It features a powerful engine and is somewhat track oriented, but not to the degree that it compromises everyday usability and comfort. It was conceived as an exercise in creating what its designers hoped would be considered the ultimate road car. Despite not having been designed as a track machine, a modified race car edition of the vehicle won several races, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1995, where it faced purpose-built prototype race cars. Production began in 1992 and ended in 1998. In all, 106 cars were manufactured, with some variations in the design.

On-board the McLaren F1 GTR - Nürburgring - 1996 BPR Global GT Endurance Series
We were very lucky to experience a passenger ride on board the 02R race-winning McLaren F1 GTR. This car is the most successful F1, having won 6 races all around the world (for instance at the Nurburgring, Jarama and Paul Ricard circuits) and participated in more than 20 races worldwide. The F1 GTR is a racing version of the McLaren F1 road car, the fastest production car in the world for many years, and this particular car has been made road-legal. It is powered by a 600 hp BMW V12 engine, actually less powerful than the road car, but is faster thanks to its lightness.

Clip from a Fifth Gear episode (9x13) showing Tiff Needell comparing the McLaren F1 and the Ferrari Enzo.
It was the coolest craziest most high- tech supercar of its generation, the McLaren F1 GTR is an icon, a dream car! I raced one at Le Mans in 1995 and finished third overall with my father Derek Bell and Andy Wallace. It was a highlight of my life. Now thanks to BMW North America I get to drive their 1996 version at Mid Ohio on a private test day. But while I waited for the rain to dry the track I thought I would share a private moment just sitting inside this amazing race car. Things I hadn't noticed before and some that made me time travel back to the big race. I hope you enjoy this inside glimpse of something that not many people will ever see in a lifetime. JB
This is one of the most intense detailing adventures I've ever had and I was privileged to work together with my detailing friends for the week. Kevin Brown, Dan Miele, Joseph Torbati, and myself, spent 138 man-hours detailing the McLaren for the Quail Concours and eventually won the coveted Spirit of the Qual award. The 1997 McLaren F1 GTR LT "LongTail" is 1 of 9 race cars produced and was shipping from Switzerland for the show. The team and I flew into Monterey, CA the week prior to the event to turn this race car into a concours winner....which is no small task. This particular race car continues to be driven on race tracks around the world despite its 8-figure price tag. We shot this episode in a "TV-style" format and hope you enjoy the length and quality of detailing information we pr...
During the Spa-Classic 2017 at Circuit Spa-Francorchamps I filmed this beautiful road legal McLaren F1 GTR Longtail in action on the track.
During the 73rd Members Meeting at the circuit of Goodwood, 16 (!) McLaren F1s gathered for some track action, a truly unbelievable sight to see and hear so many F1s between GTR and Longtail models together! The 6.1L V12 of the McLaren F1 is undoubtedly one of the best engines that I've ever heard in my life!
