NASA | A Year in the Life of Earth's CO2

An ultra-high-resolution NASA computer model has given scientists a stunning new look at how carbon dioxide in the atmosphere travels around the globe. Plumes of carbon dioxide in the simulation swirl and shift as winds disperse the greenhouse gas away from its sources. The simulation also illustrates differences in carbon dioxide levels in the northern and southern hemispheres and distinct swings in global carbon dioxide concentrations as the growth cycle of plants and trees changes with the seasons. The carbon dioxide visualization was produced by a computer model called GEOS-5, created by scientists at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center’s Global Modeling and Assimilation Office. The visualization is a product of a simulation called a “Nature Run.” The Nature Run ingests real data on atmospheric conditions and the emission of greenhouse gases and both natural and man-made particulates. The model is then left to run on its own and simulate the natural behavior of the Earth’s atmosphere. This Nature Run simulates January 2006 through December 2006. While Goddard scientists worked with a “beta” version of the Nature Run internally for several years, they released this updated, improved version to the scientific community for the first time in the fall of 2014. It is like a ‘bubble’ of carbon dioxide gas 108 metres across entering the atmosphere every second of every day. We could fill a volume the size of the UN Secretariat Building with our carbon dioxide emissions in less than half a second. We could fill it 133 times a minute. The pile of one metric ton spheres in the film, which represents one day’s emissions, is 3.7 km high (2.3 miles) and 7.4 km across (4.6 miles). The world’s use of fossil fuels is increasing, not decreasing. Renewable energy will help, but it cannot keep up with the demand for energy. The International Renewable Energy Agency’s most optimistic road-map suggests that renewables will not displace fossil fuels for decades, which is a problem because we are adding carbon dioxide to the atmosphere at an increasing rate. "Global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in 2011 rose 2.5 percent to 34 billion metric tons (37.48 billion tons) , a new record, Germany's renewable energy institute said on Tuesday. The IWR, which advises German ministries, cited recovered industrial activity after the end of the global economic crisis of recent years. "If the current trend is sustained, worldwide CO2 emissions will go up by another 20 percent to over 40 billion metric tons by 2020," IWR director Norbert Allnoch said. China led the table of emitters in 2011 with 8.9 billion metric tons, up from 8.3 billion a year earlier. Google Tech Talks December 16, 2008 ABSTRACT The Vulcan Project has estimated US fossil fuel CO2 emissions at the scale of individual factories, powerplants, roadways and cities. It has placed the inventory on a common 10 km x10 km grid at the hourly timescale for the year 2002. In addition to improvement in space and time resolution, Vulcan is quantified at the level of fuel type, economic sub-sector, and county/state identification. Vulcan is now estimating other years and including Canada and Mexico in its spatial domain. Two development paths are planned: performing this effort across the planet at scales of ~ 100 km2 and downscaling the Vulcan effort within the US domain to all emitting sources with full energy demand-driven modeling in near realtime (codename: Hestia) Slides for this talk are available here: http://www.purdue.edu/eas/carbon/vulcan/Google.pptx Speaker: Dr Kevin Gurney Dr Gurney is an Assistant Professor at Purdue University and an Associate Director at Purdue Climate Change Research Center. This reduces poverty, protects biodiversity, creates employment and delivers investor returns as well besides environmental and poverty-reduction impacts. www.startle.co / info@startle.co Charcoal is the primary cooking fuel for over 85% of the urban population in Madagascar, and is consumed at an ever-growing rate. The town of Fort Dauphin, for instance, consumes ~9,000 tons of charcoal annually, requiring ~80 thousand tons of wood that largely originate from unsustainably harvested natural forests. This is the equivalent of up to 1,300 hectares of forest per year (much of which in protected areas). This devastates Madagascar’s unique biodiversity, and contributes to climate change through the forest’s reduced capacity for absorbing CO2 emissions. Dwindling wood supplies and a growing population result in accelerating deforestation and increasing charcoal prices. This increases poverty with and reduces resilience to climate change. Startle will manufacture and sell high-quality sustainable charcoal produced from a bamboo species selected and grown specifically for energy purposes on its own sustainably managed plantation. These are to be established on a degraded government-owned forestry station, with full community involvement. The bamboo will be carbonised using efficient modern kilns. The fuel is sold to low-income households through existing channels. Startle proposes to render Fort Dauphin’s cooking fuel economy fully sustainable within 9 years, whilst delivering a financial return to investors and creating hundreds of jobs. This reduces deforestation, decreases carbon emissions and saves money for tens of thousands of very poor consumers. For every Malagasy household that switches to bamboo charcoal, FDEP prevents 3.8 tons of CO2 emissions and will save the household $24 per year – a months wages for a low-income family. Since 2011, the company has invested significantly on feasibility studies, market and technology research. Subsequently, a successful 30-hectare demonstration plantation was established nearby Fort Dauphin. The pilot plantation has been developed under a framework of agro-ecological and social best practice and has demonstrated the viability of the production process. Following extensive consultation with local communities and authorities, a site of 1,000 hectares has been secured through a public-private partnership that uniquely benefits poor local communities and has their strong support. A bamboo plantation of this size will provide a permanent source of sustainably grown wood for sustainable charcoal production for decades to come. Our proprietary efficient retort technology, developed and piloted in Kenya, produces up to three times more charcoal from the same amount of wood. This allows the company to supply charcoal to Fort Dauphin using only one third of the biomass otherwise required.

The new Mercedes-Benz C 350 e delivers the performance of a sports car while offering a certified consumption of just 2.1 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres in both its saloon and estate variants. This corresponds to CO2 emissions of 48 grams (49 grams for the estate) per kilometre. Both models are also equipped as standard with AIRMATIC air suspension plus a pre-entry climate control system that can be controlled via the internet, adding up to a truly exceptional level of driving and climate comfort. In the new C 350 e, this hybrid drive concept is combined for the first time with an efficient four-cylinder petrol engine. From a displacement of just under two litres, it produces 211 hp (155 kW) with a maximum torque of 350 Newton metres. Its direct injection system with spray-guided combustion uses electronically precision-controlled multiple injection and fast multi-spark ignition to deliver outstanding performance coupled with high efficiency and exemplary emissions. The electric motor in the C 350 e has an output of up to 60 kW and delivers a torque of 340 Newton metres, making for a total system output of 279 hp (205 kW) with a torque of 600 Newton metres. The hybrid module of the standard 7-speed 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission incorporates both the electric motor and an additional clutch between the combustion engine and the electric motor. When driving in all-electric mode, this decouples the combustion engine from the drive train. It also, however, offers the possibility of moving off using the combustion engine but with the performance of a wet start-up clutch. The clutch here is a substitute for the torque converter. The saloon can accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds, while the estate, at 6.2 seconds, is almost as quick off the mark. The saloon can reach a top speed of 250 km/h and the estate up to 246 km/h, both in conjunction with a certified fuel consumption of 2.1 litres per 100 kilometres. Scheduled to follow shortly after the market launch, the Audi Q7 e‑tron quattro is the world’s first plug-in hybrid with a six-cylinder diesel engine and quattro all-wheel drive. The 3.0 TFSI produces 245 kW (333 hp) and 440 Nm (324.5 lb-ft) of torque, accelerating the big SUV from 0 to 100 km/h (62.1 mph) in 6.1 seconds on its way to a top speed of 250 km/h (155.3 mph). Its mechanical compressor, which provides charging, is deactivated when operating at part load. This technique contributes to the low consumption of 7.7 liters per 100 kilometers (30.5 US mpg) in the NEDC, corresponding to 179 grams CO2 per kilometer (288.1 g/mi). The powerful 3.0 TDI produces 200 kW (272 hp) and 600 Nm (442.5 lb-ft) of torque. The sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62.1 mph) takes 6.3 seconds; top speed is of 234 km/h (145.4 mph). Average fuel consumption is just 5.7 liters per 100 kilometers (41.3 US mpg), which equates to CO2 emissions of 149 grams per kilometer (239.8 g/mi). The V6 diesel has been systematically designed for minimal internal friction and efficient thermal management. A second variant of the 3.0 TDI with 160 kW (218 hp) and 500 Nm (368.8 lb-ft) of torque will follow at a later date. This efficiency model will further reduce the CO2 emissions of the 3.0 TDI, setting new standards for efficiency. Another engine is the 2.0 TFSI with an output of 185 kW (252 hp) and 370 Nm (272.9 lb-ft) of torque. It is planned primarily for the Asian markets and the U.S.A.
