Blackburn Buccaneer
The Blackburn Buccaneer originated in the early 1950s as a design for a carrier-borne attack aircraft able to carry a nuclear bomb below radar coverage. It was a British low-level subsonic strike aircraft that served with the Royal Navy (RN) and later the Royal Air Force (RAF), retiring from service in 1994. Designed and initially produced by Blackburn Aircraft at Brough, it was later known as the Hawker Siddeley Buccaneer when Blackburn became a part of the Hawker Siddeley group.
The Royal Navy originally procured the Buccaneer as a naval strike aircraft capable of operating from their aircraft carriers, introducing the type to service in 1962 to counterbalance advances made in the Soviet Navy. The Buccaneer was capable of delivering nuclear weapons as well as conventional munitions for anti-shipping warfare, and was typically active in the North Sea area during its service. Early on the initial production aircraft suffered a series of accidents due to insufficient engine power, thus the Buccaneer S.2, equipped with more powerful Rolls-Royce Spey engines, was soon introduced.
Although they originally rejected it in favour of the supersonic BAC TSR-2, the RAF later procured the Buccaneer as a substitute following the cancellation of both the TSR-2 and its planned replacement, the F-111K. When the RN retired the last of its large aircraft carriers, its Buccaneers were transferred to the RAF. The South African Air Force also procured the type. Buccaneers saw combat action in the Gulf War and the South African Border War. In RN service, the Buccaneer was replaced with the V/STOL British Aerospace Sea Harrier. In RAF service, they were replaced by the Panavia Tornado.

Royal Navy Documentary Cold War "1400 Zulu" 71062
Created in 1965, "1400 Zulu" is a classic British propaganda and recruiting film that profiles the Royal Navy's operations around the world: from the Caribbean to Aden to the Suez Canal and beyond. It's a job that involves hundreds of ships and tens of thousands of men both above, on and below the water of all the world's oceans. The film shows some of the newest weapons in the RN's arsenal including nuclear submarines, missile systems and the Guided Missile Destroyer HMS Hampshire, Harrier Jump Jets and carrier-based Buccaneers, and helicopters. The Royal Marines including frogmen are shown performing manoeuvres, and various military exercises are shown and activities demonstrated.
HMS Hampshire was a County-class destroyer of the Royal Navy. Laid down, in March 1959 a couple of weeks behind the class leader Devonshire, she was classified as a guided missile destroyer, as the Sea Lords regarded the concept of the cruiser and big gun ship as discredited by the perceived failure of the Tiger class and the obsolescence of the heavy gun. The description of guided missile destroyer seemed more likely to win approval from the Treasury and Government for an adequate number of warships the size of small cruisers which could play many traditional cruiser flagship and command functions but had armour around neither its gun or missile magazine.

Blackburn Monoplane - Shuttleworth Race Day Airshow 2014
The Shuttleworth Collection's Blackburn Monoplane Type D replica, displaying during the Shuttleworth Race Day Airshow 2014.
Robert Blackburn was born on the 26th March 1885 and became one of Britain's first aircraft designers and builders. His first aeroplane to fly did so at Filey in 1910 and he then produced several designs over the next two years. The basic 1912 machine was called the Mercury or the Type D monoplane. It was quite an advanced design for the time with all surfaces fully covered and an engine cowling around the top part of the engine. Although the design looks modern it still retains wing warping as the method of lateral control. The Collection's Blackburn monoplane was the seventh Mercury monoplane built. It was built in October 1912 to the order of Cyril Foggin, who learnt to fly at the Blackburn School at Hendon. It first flew in December 1912 in the hands of Harold Blackburn and was demonstrated by the company during the first part of 1913. Cyril Foggin first flew his new aeroplane on March 24 1913, but the aircraft was still used as a demonstration model by Blackburn. The aircraft was also used by Harold Blackburn to fly copies of the Yorkshire Post newspaper from Leeds to York between July 23-25 1913. The Blackburn Monoplane was then modified to have rounded wing tips and was fitted with a new design of undercarriage. It was then acquired by Montague Francis Glew, but he crashed the Blackburn at Wittering, Lincolnshire in 1914. The outbreak of the First World War led to the Blackburn being abandoned and forgotten. It was discovered in 1937 by Richard Shuttleworth, hidden under a haystack. Richard had to purchase the haystack to obtain the aeroplane. He then took the aircraft back to Old Warden and started to restore the aircraft, but Richard was killed in 1940 and work stopped. After the war, Richard Shuttleworth's chief engineer, Squadron Leader L.A. Jackson completed the restoration in 1949. The first flight of the Blackburn monoplane after restoration was made at nearby RAF Henlow on September 17 1949 by Group Captain A.H. Wheeler. The first public appearance of the Blackburn was made on the 25th September at the Royal Aircraft Establishments display at Farnborough. Since then it has been flying regularly with the Shuttleworth Collection and when the weather is calm enough it still takes to the air. Today it is a unique machine as it is the oldest airworthy British aeroplane in the world. Height: 8ft Length: 33ft Wingspan: 35ft 8in Engine: one 50hp Gnome rotary Max. Speed: 60mph

Blackburn Hamlet is a very special community in the Ottawa Region. It is one of only two communities that are completely surrounded by the National Capital Commission Greenbelt lands and Federal Conservation Authority lands. This unique geography provides its residents with over 250 km of hiking and cross country skiing trails.
It is also the home of one of the best toboggan hills in the city at Green's Creek as well as the Hornet's Nest, a series of outdoor soccer fields including a Super Dome.
One of the oldest communities in Ottawa, Blackburn Hamlet is closer to downtown Ottawa than most suburbs and really offers an old-fashioned country village feel rarely found in the newer subdivisions.
Residents in Blackburn are never shy to tell you how much they love the treed parks and bike paths that connect the community from one end to the other. Parents have always enjoyed walking their kids to school through the path system, which more often than not is accessed from either their own backyard or a public access on every street.
Summers see many of the residents enjoying the outdoor pool and tennis courts in the centre of the Hamlet or participating in many of the communities organized activities and leagues like the very popular annual Blackburn Fun Fair.
There is a very relaxed feeling as you stroll through this neighbourhood. Residents are quick with a hello and love to stop and chat.
With apartments, condominium garden homes and large single family houses on some of the prettiest streets in the city, Blackburn has lots to offer those folks that want wide open spaces as close to the city as they can get. It is the kind of community that, if kids grew up there, they want to move back into when they can afford a home of their own.
Blackburn has strong local retailers servicing its residents and many a home's gardens has been supplied by Budd Gardens, one of the co-creators of the current community. Commuting into the downtown core is easy and fast, and being close to the main highways makes it a popular location for homeowners.

ROYAL NAVY 1960s COLD WAR PROMOTIONAL FILM "1400 ZULU" 71062
Created in 1965, "1400 Zulu" is a classic British propaganda and recruiting film that profiles the Royal Navy's operations around the world: from the Caribbean to Aden to the Suez Canal and beyond. It's a job that involves hundreds of ships and tens of thousands of men both above, on and below the water of all the world's oceans. The film shows some of the newest weapons in the RN's arsenal including nuclear submarines, missile systems and the Guided Missile Destroyer HMS Hampshire, Harrier Jump Jets and carrier-based Buccaneers, and helicopters.
The Royal Marines including frogmen are shown performing maneuvers, and various military exercises are shown and activities demonstrated.

=======================
The USS Forrestal (CV-59), formerly AVT-59 and CVA-59, was a supercarrier named after former Secretary of the Navy James Forrestal. Commissioned in 1955, she was the first supercarrier, and was the lead ship of her class. The other carriers of her class were the USS Saratoga, USS Ranger and USS Independence. She superseded the WW II Japanese carrier Shinano as the largest aircraft carrier ever built in terms of full load displacement and was the first to specifically support jet aircraft.
The ship was affectionately called "The FID", because James Forrestal was the first ever Secretary of Defense, FID standing for "First In Defense". This is also the slogan on the ship's insignia and patch. She was also informally known in the fleet as the "USS Zippo" and "Forest Fire" or "Firestal" because of a number of highly publicized fires on board, most notably a 1967 incident in which 134 sailors died and an additional 161 were injured.
Forrestal served for nearly five decades in the Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Pacific. She was decommissioned in 1993, and made available as a museum. Attempts to save her were unsuccessful, however, and in February 2014 she was towed to Brownsville, Texas to be scrapped.
