BMW Z1
The BMW Z1 is a two-seat roadster automobile developed by BMW. It was produced from March 1989 to June 1991. The Z1 featured doors which dropped down into the door sills. A total of 8,000 cars were produced. All the Z1s were left-hand drive.
History
The first example of the Z1 was released by BMW to the press in 1986 and later officially presented at the 1987 Frankfurt Motor Show. Initial demand was so fierce that BMW had 5,000 orders before production began. However, demand dropped significantly around 1988 and BMW ended production in 1991. There is speculation that the drop in demand was due to the early inflated demand from speculative investors. In 1988, however, BMW was quoted as saying that they had 35,000 orders for the Z1.
The BMW Z1 was designed over a three-year period by an in-house division of BMW Forschung und Technik GmbH. The development of the Z1 is attributed to Ulrich Bez and his team at BMW Technik GmbH (Harm Lagaay, Alexander Pregl, Rudolf Müller, Lutz Janssen, Wolf-Henryk Menke, Dieter Schaffner, Klaus Faust, Sabine Zemelka, Patrick Ayoub and Stephan Stark). Control of the project was turned over to. Klaus Faust when Bez left for Porsche in October 1988.

The BMW Z1 is a two-seat roadster automobile developed by BMW inspired by its famous predecessor the 507. It was produced from March 1989 to June 1991. The Z1 featured doors which dropped down into the door sills. A total of 8,000 cars were produced. All the Z1s were left-hand drive. CHASSIS The chassis was specially designed for the Z1 and features a number of innovative features: removable body panels, continuously zinc welded seams, a composite undertray, and the unusual dropped doors. The body was made from plastic and could be removed completely from the chassis. During the Z1s launch, BMW suggested that owners purchase an additional set of body panels and change the color of the car from time to time. The BMW Z1 is a two-seat roadster automobile developed by BMW inspired by its famous predecessor the 507. It was produced from March 1989 to June 1991. The Z1 featured doors which dropped down into the door sills. A total of 8,000 cars were produced. All the Z1s were left-hand drive.
CHASSIS
The chassis was specially designed for the Z1 and features a number of innovative features: removable body panels, continuously zinc welded seams, a composite undertray, and the unusual dropped doors.
The body was made from plastic and could be removed completely from the chassis.
During the Z1s launch, BMW suggested that owners purchase an additional set of body panels and change the color of the car from time to time.
DOORS
The doors retract vertically down into the car's body instead of swinging outward or upward. The Kaiser Darrin was the first car to have retractable doors; they slid forward into the front fenders. The inspiration for these doors came from more traditional roadsters which often feature removable metal or cloth doors. Because removable doors did not fit within BMW's design goals, the retractable doors were installed instead.
The body with its high sills, offers crash protection independent of the doors, the vehicle may be legally and safely driven with the doors up or down, although this is not legal in the U.S.
The windows may be operated independently of the doors, although they do retract automatically if the door is lowered. Both the window and door are driven by electric motors through toothed rubber belts and may be moved manually in an emergency.

BMW's 100 Year Festival - Countless Classic BMWs in Munich
This year, BMW is celebrating 100 years of building cars, and to mark the occasion, the company virtually took over its home town of Munich, Germany, setting up a sprawling festival which was completely open to the public. The anchor point of the festival was the BMW Welt, a stunning building which forms the heart of the company's head quarters. The BMW Museum was an integral part of the display, not to mention the futuristic Vision Next 100 Concept, and the day was capped off by a large scale concert and fireworks display in Munich's dramatic Olympic Park stadium. But for Cars.co.za's Ciro De Siena, who travelled to Munich to take part in the festivities, the highlight was a morning's wander around the meet up of the BMW Club Internationale. At the start of 1985, the idea came to fruition. Not five minutes' drive from the Group's headquarters, a highly dedicated high-tech company came into being that has long since become a role model the world over: BMW Technik GmbH, known internally simply by the letters ZT. Just six months later, the 60-strong team delivered exactly what had been hoped for: concrete concepts designed to inject car manufacture with new impetus, all under the umbrella of a pilot project for employing new materials, using different types of vehicle structure and shortening development times. It didn't take long to coin a name for it: the Z1.
The Z1's appearance belied its true sporting talents. Originally conceived as an automotive test laboratory, outstanding aerodynamics had been a top priority for development. The aim was to meet these targets without using the customary aerodynamic aids at that time such as spoilers and wings; instead, the basic shape of the vehicle itself, including the underbody, was intended to achieve the desired results.
The very flat front end of the Z1, the smooth transitions on its bonnet and the windscreen raked at an angle of 62° provided all the right ingredients for a smooth flow of air along the top of the car. The vehicle's perfectly smooth underbody formed a virtually continuous surface extending from the front end through to the rear axle. The underside of the vehicle rose slightly towards the rear in the form of a diffuser, thereby directing the airflow at the transverse rear silencer, which was shaped in the form of a wing to help reduce rear axle lift substantially.
The car's looks made no secret of the fact that it was something quite special. After all, one of the highlights of the innovative Z1 concept was an up-to-date and highly attractive interpretation of the roadster concept. It marked a departure from the long, elongated shape of classic roadsters, featuring instead short overhangs as well as a compact overall length relative to its wheelbase. The joints along the side panels were quite different from the conventional design at that time. The new door concept produced a wide, joint-free side sill with an elevated entrance height, with the upper edge of the bumpers and side sills forming a continuous line. The Z1 was tapered in around the doors, giving the wings a broad and flared appearance that was reminiscent of the M3. The BMW kidney grille also sported an updated look, as it was fully integrated in the front bumper's contours, making it look smaller and more compact.
The new BMW roadster's interior appointments were highly functional in nature but, above all, very upmarket: the seats and door panels were all trimmed in new high-class materials combined with fine leather. The low-slung seating position, bulky transmission tunnel and wide sills called for a new technical concept for the Z1 seats, so the roadster was fitted with bucket-shaped all-foam seats affording the high levels of lateral support needed to be able to put the sports car's outstanding cornering abilities to the test. Plastic shells painted to match the car's colour enveloped the seat backrest, which had the headrest integrated into its outline. The driver's seat was height adjustable, and the passenger seat could be tilted forward to make better use of the through-loading facility.
The price for the Z1 had by now climbed to DM 83,000, but in no way did that deter the buyers. Some 4,000 orders had already been placed, meaning the Z1 was already sold out until the end of 1990. And when the first production models rolled off the assembly line in early 1989, sales contracts that were ready for delivery were already being advertised in newspapers for a premium of DM 20,000.

BMW X1 SUV review - Carbuyer
The BMW X1 is a premium compact SUV and the smallest off-roader in the brand's range. The term ‘compact’ is a bit deceptive here, however: although it's 15mm shorter than its predecessor, it's also 53mm taller and 23mm wider. It's also styled more like an SUV than the previous model, which just looked like a high-riding 3 Series estate. The X1 has many rivals to contend with, including the Audi Q3, Mercedes GLA-Class and desirable Range Rover Evoque. The BMW Z1 was a two-seat roadster automobile developed by BMW. It was produced from March 1989 to June 1991.[1] The BMW Z1 featured doors which dropped down into the door sills. A total of 8,000 cars were produced. All the BMW Z1s were left-hand drive, except the final one assembled, which was right-hand drive. The Z in BMW Z1 originally stood for Zukunft (German for future) and would later be used on other cars in the line: the BMW Z3, BMW Z4, and BMW Z8). All of these vehicles (including the BMW Z1) are two-door roadsters (except for the few M coupe and BMW Z3 and BMW Z4 hardtop models).
The BMW Z1 instruments on the Z1 are styled like motorcycle gauges, and the tachometer on the BMW Z1 has a red needle, whereas all other gauges have a white needle.
New BMW Z1price vehicles sold for 83,000 to 89,000 DM[11][15] or between €42,000 and €45,500. As of 2001, used BMW Z1 vehicles were selling for between FF125,000 and 250,000 (between €19,000 and €38,000) in France including a 19.6% VAT.[16] One BMW Z1 example fetched just over £20,000 at Bonham's 2004 Olympia auction.[2] In 2006, BMW Z1 cars could be bought in France for a price between €25,000 and €30,000 the upper being reach for cars in perfect condition with low mileage.
BMW Z1 Alpina also produced a version of the BMW Z1, named the BMW Z1 RLE (Roadster Limited Edition) of which only 66 were made.[17] Half of the production was exported to the Japanese market while the other 33 remained in Europe. ALPINA BMW Z1 enhancements decreased the 0-62 mph time to 7.1 seconds and increased the top speed of the BMW Z1 RLE to 231 km/h.
Minichamps BMW Z1, Schabak BMW Z1, Revell BMW Z1, and Herpa BMW Z1 have made die-cast and plastic models of the Z1. Additionally, 16,000 BMW Z1 phone cards (10,000 in February 1992 and 6,000 in November 1997) featuring pictures of the Z1 were issued in France.[20]
The BMW Z1 also had a very small part in the Jackie Chan film, Armour of God II: Operation Condor.
BMW Z1 Doors
The BMW Z1 doors retract vertically down into the car's body instead of swinging outward or upward. The Kaiser Darrin was the first car to have retractable doors, they slid forward into the front fenders. The inspiration for these doors came from more traditional roadsters which often feature removable metal or cloth doors. Because removable doors did not fit within BMW's design goals, the BMW Z1 retractable doors were installed instead.
The BMW Z1 body with its high sills, offers crash protection independent of the BMW Z1 doors, the BMW Z1 may be legally and safely driven with the doors up or down, although they are not legal in the U.S.
The BMW Z1 windows may be operated independently of the doors, although they do retract automatically if the door is lowered. Both the BMW Z1 window and BMW Z1 door are driven by electric motors through toothed rubber belts and may be moved manually in an emergency.
BMW Z1 Engine Driveline
Both the BMW Z1 engine (the BMW M20B25) and the five-speed manual BMW Z1 gearbox (the Getrag 260/5) were sourced from the BMW E30 325i. The 2.5 L (2,494 cc) 12-valve SOHC straight-six BMW Z1 engine sits tilted 20 degrees to the right to accommodate the low hoodline.[2] The BMW Z1 engine produces 168 hp (125 kW) at 5,800 rpm and 222 N·m (164 lb·ft) of torque in its original form. Several BMW Z1 tuners have programs for increasing the performance of the Z1 by either upgrading or replacing the engine.
The BMW Z3 was the first modern mass-market roadster produced by BMW, as well as the first new BMW model assembled in the United States. The Z in Z3 originally stood for Zukunft (German for future). The Z3 was introduced via video press release by BMW North America on June 12, 1995, as a 1996 model year vehicle. Later, in November 1995, it was featured in the James Bond movie, GoldenEye, in which a blue prototype was provided for filming in late January 1995 at the Leavesden Aerodrome. At that time Karen Sortito created the BMW campaign for the film GoldenEye. Afterwards, while the film was number one at the box office, sales of the car spiked. The entire 1996 BMW Z3 roadster production run, more than 15,000 roadsters, was sold out by the time the car was introduced. It was manufactured and assembled in Greer, South Carolina. The Z3 was replaced by the BMW Z4 introduced in late 2002 at the Paris Auto Show. The BMW Z Series are a line of roadsters considered to be successor to the BMW 507.

The BMW Z1 also had a very small part in the Jackie Chan film, Armour of God II: Operation Condor.
BMW Z1 Doors
The BMW Z1 doors retract vertically down into the car's body instead of swinging outward or upward. The Kaiser Darrin was the first car to have retractable doors, they slid forward into the front fenders. The inspiration for these doors came from more traditional roadsters which often feature removable metal or cloth doors. Because removable doors did not fit within BMW's design goals, the BMW Z1 retractable doors were installed instead.
The BMW Z1 body with its high sills, offers crash protection independent of the BMW Z1 doors, the BMW Z1 may be legally and safely driven with the doors up or down, although they are not legal in the U.S.
The BMW Z1 windows may be operated independently of the doors, although they do retract automatically if the door is lowered. Both the BMW Z1 window and BMW Z1 door are driven by electric motors through toothed rubber belts and may be moved manually in an emergency.
BMW Z1 Engine Driveline
Both the BMW Z1 engine (the BMW M20B25) and the five-speed manual BMW Z1 gearbox (the Getrag 260/5) were sourced from the BMW E30 325i. The 2.5 L (2,494 cc) 12-valve SOHC straight-six BMW Z1 engine sits tilted 20 degrees to the right to accommodate the low hoodline.[2] The BMW Z1 engine produces 168 hp (125 kW) at 5,800 rpm and 222 N·m (164 lb·ft) of torque in its original form. Several BMW Z1 tuners have programs for increasing the performance of the Z1 by either upgrading or replacing the engine.
The BMW Z3 was the first modern mass-market roadster produced by BMW, as well as the first new BMW model assembled in the United States. The Z in Z3 originally stood for Zukunft (German for future). The Z3 was introduced via video press release by BMW North America on June 12, 1995, as a 1996 model year vehicle. Later, in November 1995, it was featured in the James Bond movie, GoldenEye, in which a blue prototype was provided for filming in late January 1995 at the Leavesden Aerodrome. At that time Karen Sortito created the BMW campaign for the film GoldenEye. Afterwards, while the film was number one at the box office, sales of the car spiked. The entire 1996 BMW Z3 roadster production run, more than 15,000 roadsters, was sold out by the time the car was introduced. It was manufactured and assembled in Greer, South Carolina. The Z3 was replaced by the BMW Z4 introduced in late 2002 at the Paris Auto Show. The BMW Z Series are a line of roadsters considered to be successor to the BMW 507.
