pronunciation (help·info); Punjabi: ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਸਰ IPA: [əmːɾɪt̪səɾ], historically also known as ਰਾਮਦਾਸਪੁਰ Rāmdāspur and colloquially as ਅੰਬਰਸਰ, Ambarsar) is a city in the north-western part of India. It is the spiritual center for the Sikh religion and the administrative headquarters of the Amritsar district in the state of Punjab.
It is home to the Harmandir Sahib (referred to as the "Golden Temple" in the western media), the spiritual and cultural center for the Sikh religion. This important Sikh shrine attracts more visitors than the Taj Mahal with more than 100,000 visitors on week days alone and is the most popular destination for Non-resident Indians (NRI) in the whole of India. The city also houses the Sikh temporal and political authority, Akal Takht, as well as the Sikh Parliament.
The 2011 Indian census reported the population of the city to be 1,132,761. Amritsar is situated 217 kilometres (135 mi) northwest of state capital Chandigarh and is 32 kilometres (20 mi) east of Lahore, Pakistan and therefore, very close to India's western border with Pakistan.

Gippy Grewal (or Rupinder Grewal) is a Punjabi Singer and Actor.
He is a Jatt Sikh, born in village Koom Kalam, Ludhiana, Punjab on January 2, 1982. He was enrolled in a Hotel Management course prior to entering the Punjabi Music Industry.
He made is debut with the album "Chakk Lai" which went on to became an instant success and brought him into the limelight in the Punjabi Music Industry. He then went on to further his success with albums like "Nasha," "Phulkari," "Phulkari 2 Just Hits" and "Gangster." His 2012 song "Angreji Beat" a collaboration with Honey Singh for his album International Villager stormed the Punjabi Music Charts worldwide and is now featured in Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone's Bollywood film Cocktail that releases in July 2012.
He made his debut in Punjabi Films in a supporting role in 2010 with the superhit film Mel Karade Rabba opposite Jimmy Shergill and Indo-Canadian actress Neeru Bajwa. He followed that up with a lead role in Jihne Mera Dil Luteya with Diljit Dosanjh which became the biggest hit in Punjabi Cinema. In April 2012 his film Mirza - The Untold Story released with the highest opening for a Punjabi film opposite UK-Punjabi actress Mandy Takhar. His next movie Carry On Jatta pairs him with critically acclaimed Bollywood actress Mahie Gill, it releases in July 2012. He then joins forces with Jazzy Bains who will be making his Punjabi film debut in Best of Luck opposite Miss India Universe 2008 Simran Mundi.

UNITED SIKHS will premiere tonight (24th June 2014) on Sangat TV the first episode of a three-part documentary series 'Unheard Voices', which tells the story of how Sikhs continue their 30-year wait for justice for the thousands of innocent pilgrims who were killed by the Indian Army and for the restitution of the Sikh Reference Library, whose contents were removed before it was burnt by the Army during the attack on the Darbar Sahib (Golden Temple) Complex. This massacre of pilgrims took place during the Indian Army attack, codenamed Blue Star, on Darbar Sahib from the 1st of June to the 6th of June 1984, killing thousands whilst desecrating the sanctum sanctorum of Sikhs.
The first episode, 'The Smoking Gun Recovered', presents eyewitness accounts of how the contents of the Sikh Reference Library, which was located in the Darbar Sahib complex and which held the invaluable heritage of the Sikhs, were removed by the Indian Army before it was burnt during the June 1984 attack. The Library housed historical saroops of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, the eternal Sikh Guru, one of which was dated 1604,
In 1991, the Government of India, under pressure from Sikhs for the return of their heritage, returned some 29 books, which included four original Accession Registers that were a catalogue of the Library's contents. The Registers were the 'smoking gun' that proved that the Library's contents, including the Saroops of Guru Grant Sahib Ji, were removed by the Indian Government before the Library was burnt. Despite a Punjab and Haryana High Court order in 2004, the Indian Government has failed to return the contents of the Library. Presenting a full journey compilation of the journey between Delhi and Amritsar from the Amritsar Swarn Shatabdi Express. This Shatabdi runs with IRY coaches and covers the 448 kilometre distance between New Delhi and Amritsar in 6 hours and 20 minutes, at an average speed of 70 kmph and a maximum permissible speed of 110 kmph, with 6 intermediate halts. It is possible the sole Shatabdi Express to ply with 3 AC Executive Chair Cars, in addition to about 13 AC Chair Cars.
This compilation covers the Shatabdi's rapid run through the plains of Haryana and Punjab. The Shatabdi maintains a fantastic pace as it zips through relatively large stations such as Panipat, Kurukshetra, Sirhind and Phillaur. The rapid pace of the Shatabdi can also be gauged from the fact that it outruns every single vehicle on the adjacent national highway.
Powered by a Ghaziabad WAP5, there are some high speed encounters on the way, notably with the WAP7 hauled Kalka Shatabdi, the WAP7 hauled Paschim Express, and the WDM3A hauled Amritsar Haridwar Jan Shatabdi.
Enroute Amritsar, we cross two of the five major rivers which gives Punjab its name: namely Sutlej after Ludhiana, and the Beas, midway between Jalandhar and Amritsar. The latter had a fair bit of water in it, making for a lovely sight. Another point of interest is the heavy industrialization of the Punjab, post Ambala. One hardly gets to see a non-permanent structure in the form of dwellings and a number of houses even in apparently rural areas are at least two stories high.

Akali Dal leader shot dead in ‘police encounter’ in Amritsar
Amritsar: the Punjab Police is in the dock after it reportedly killed Akali Dal leader Mukhjeet Singh Mukha by mistake in a police encounter in Amritsar
The incident happened yesterday evening when police men in civil clothes intercepted Mukha’s car and fire and fired indiscriminately at him. He was killed on the spot.
Reports said that the police have termed the incident as a case of mistaken identity as they had thought they had waylaid criminal. The police said that they had specific information that a person was travelling in an i20 car – without number plates – was on his way to commit some crime.
The police said that there was return fire from the car in which a constable was injured.
Mukha was associated with the Youth Akali Dal. He was the party’s in-charge of ward number 16 in Amritsar Municipal Corporation.
However, Mukha’s family disputed the sequence of event and even alleged that the police had killed him in a planned manner.
One relative told a newspaper that the police had removed the number plate of the car after the encounter and later kept a gun near his dead body.
Protests also broke out in Amritsar against the killing of the Akali Dal leader. Locals are demanding that guilty police men be booked for murder and arrested immediately.

1) "Ghanta Ghar". This is the main entrance, sporting a distinctly Victorian clock-tower. Wash your feet in the water at the entrance in order to keep the temple clean.
2) Amrit Sarovar. The giant pool of water that surrounds and reflects the Golden Temple. Sections (marked off by ropes) are set aside for (male) pilgrims wishing to bathe.
3) Harmandir Sahib. This is the Golden Temple itself, floating above the Amrit Sarovar, housing the sacred Adi Granth scripture which is recited out loud during the day. We visited the Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar. Being on the site that witnessed a deadly massacre sent shivers down my spine. The was a hall full of enlarged (actual) photos and letters published during the freedom struggle..Its out of imagination what our freedom fighters might have faced at that time and how much they sacrificed for a better tomorrow.
But is our present what they lost their lives for?

WATCH THE UPDATED VERSION AT THIS LINK: http://youtu.be/QKI2Ojx_DpY UNITED SIKHS will premiere tonight (24th June 2014) on Sangat TV the first episode of a three-part documentary series 'Unheard Voices', which tells the story of how Sikhs continue their 30-year wait for justice for the thousands of innocent pilgrims who were killed by the Indian Army and for the restitution of the Sikh Reference Library, whose contents were removed before it was burnt by the Army during the attack on the Darbar Sahib (Golden Temple) Complex. This massacre of pilgrims took place during the Indian Army attack, codenamed Blue Star, on Darbar Sahib from the 1st of June to the 6th of June 1984, killing thousands whilst desecrating the sanctum sanctorum of Sikhs. The first episode, 'The Smoking Gun Recovered', presents eyewitness accounts of how the contents of the Sikh Reference Library, which was located in the Darbar Sahib complex and which held the invaluable heritage of the Sikhs, were removed by the Indian Army before it was burnt during the June 1984 attack. The Library housed historical saroops of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, the eternal Sikh Guru, one of which was dated 1604, In 1991, the Government of India, under pressure from Sikhs for the return of their heritage, returned some 29 books, which included four original Accession Registers that were a catalogue of the Library's contents. The Registers were the 'smoking gun' that proved that the Library's contents, including the Saroops of Guru Grant Sahib Ji, were removed by the Indian Government before the Library was burnt. Despite a Punjab and Haryana High Court order in 2004, the Indian Government has failed to return the contents of the Library. Powered by a Ghaziabad WAP5, there are some high speed encounters on the way, notably with the WAP7 hauled Kalka Shatabdi, the WAP7 hauled Paschim Express, and the WDM3A hauled Amritsar Haridwar Jan Shatabdi. Enroute Amritsar, we cross two of the five major rivers which gives Punjab its name: namely Sutlej after Ludhiana, and the Beas, midway between Jalandhar and Amritsar. The latter had a fair bit of water in it, making for a lovely sight. Another point of interest is the heavy industrialization of the Punjab, post Ambala. Wash your feet in the water at the entrance in order to keep the temple clean. 2) Amrit Sarovar. The giant pool of water that surrounds and reflects the Golden Temple. Sections (marked off by ropes) are set aside for (male) pilgrims wishing to bathe. 3) Harmandir Sahib. This is the Golden Temple itself, floating above the Amrit Sarovar, housing the sacred Adi Granth scripture which is recited out loud during the day. This is the most crowded point, accessible by a bridge from the edge of the pool, and entry here is regulated by traditionally dressed Sikh guards. It's a 2 storey structure where Sikh saints are seated on each floor. 4) Akal Takht, directly opposite the Harmandir Sahib. Meaning "The Timeless", this is where the highest council of Sikhs sits and deliberates. At night, the Guru Granth Sahib is taken to the Akal Takht. 5) Central Sikh Museum, 2nd floor (entrance on the right side of the main side of the main entrance). It is not just Sikhs who travel to the Golden Temple to pay homage, the sacred shrine is equally revered by Hindus and people of other faiths who, too, make the pilgrimage to offer prayers at Harmandir Sahib.
