Taiping Island is the largest of the Spratly Islands in the South China Sea, and the only one where fresh water is available. The island is elliptical in shape being 1.4 km in length and 0.4 km in width. It is part of the Tizard Bank (Zheng He Reefs; 鄭和群礁), one of seven reefs in the Spratly Islands near the centre of the South China Sea. The Taiping Island Airport is the most prominent artificial feature on the island.
Taiping Island (Chinese: 太平島; pinyin: Tàipíng Dǎo; literally "peace island") is named in honor of a Nationalist Chinese Navy warship which sailed to the island in 1946, which allowed the ROC to assert its claim to the Spratly Islands in 1947. This name is favored by both Taipei and by Beijing. The island was previously called Huángshānmǎ Jiāo (黃山馬礁) or Huángshānmǎ Zhì (黃山馬峙) by Chinese fishermen.
Jiang Zemin came to power following Tiananmen Square protests of 1989, replacing Zhao Ziyang as CPC General Secretary. With the waning influence of Deng Xiaoping and the other members of Eight Elders due to old age,and with the help of old and powerful party and state leaders, former President Li Xiannian and Chen Yun Jiang effectively became the "Paramount Leader" in the 1990s. Under his leadership, China experienced substantial developmental growth with reforms, saw the peaceful return of Hong Kong from the United Kingdom and Macau from Portugal, and improved its relations with the outside world while the Communist Party maintained its tight control over the government. Jiang has been criticized for being too concerned about his personal image at home, and too conciliatory towards Russia and the United States abroad.

Taiwan to upgrade naval facilities on disputed island in South China Sea
Taiwan plans to spend over US$100 million to build new maritime facilities for warships and supply vessels on Taiping Island in the disputed Spratlys in the South China Sea.
The new spending package by Taiwanese Coast Guard Administration was announced by a Taiwanese legislator in parliament Tuesday. The projected cost is expected to be NT$3.4 billion (~US$112.4 million). The expenditures are expected be approved.
If completed on schedule, the new pier would be completed sometime in 2016. The current dock can only support small motorboats, however the new one should be able to dock military supply ships and frigates. The current airstrip on the island could also be included in the upgrade scheme as well.
Vietnam, which also includes the Spratlys in their territorial claims is protesting the decision because it means the personnel that Taiwan sends to man the island will likely rise from its current 100 now. Mainland China also makes claim to the archipelago, however it has yet to weigh in on the matter as of this report.

Taiping Island is the largest of the Spratly Islands, and the only one with freshwater supply. The island is home to many tropical plant species unseen in other parts of Taiwan. Not only is it the rest stop for many migratory birds, it is also an important nesting site for the green turtles. Due to its location within the “Coral Triangle”, the global center of marine biodiversity, species diversity of corals and fishes are exceptionally high, here in the waters of Taiping Island. Spratly Islands, the southernmost part of Taiwan, is a treasure trove of bounteous resources, which in turn provides countless ecosystem services. While the countries bordering the South China Sea are thinking in terms of economic benefits, we have chosen to prioritize ecological preservation over development. We hope to replace the plunder of the islands’ natural resources with long-term surveys and management plans, to sustain the ecosystems in the region. (All rights reserved. China building island large enough for an airfield in disputed south sea waters as satellite images show workers expanding on archipelago of military bases
Chinese officials have created a 3,000m-long reef in the Spratly Islands
Archipelago has been source of dispute between south Asian countries
Vietnamese, Malaysian and Filipino forces all have airfields in the water
The developing Fiery Cross Reef may become China's first airbase
Air force colonel said the military needed facilities in South China Sea
Chinese officials are building the first island large enough for its own airfield in the middle of disputed waters in the south sea.
Satellite images revealed that since reclaiming the Spratly Islands in August, workers have expanded one stretch of sand to make it long enough for aircraft to land and take off.
Dredgers are also creating a harbour to the east of the reef large enough to receive tankers and warships.
The 3,000m patch Fiery Cross Reef forms part of the archipelago which has been at the heart of territorial disputes for years.
While the islands, named after the British sailor Richard Spratly who discovered them in 1843, lie between the Philippines, Vietnam and Malaysia, they are host to a plethora of military machinery and resources owned by the Republic of China.
Fears that China intended to use the archipelago as a mineral-rich installation of military bases spread when officials began reclaiming the abandoned islands in August.
While the Chinese army controls many of the 750 islets and reefs, it does not yet have its own airfield in the south China sea unlike Malaysian, Vietnamese and Filipino forces.
According to imagery obtained by the Hong Kong defence publication IHS, dredging has begun on Fiery Cross Reef to create a harbour large enough for military tankers.
Johnson South Reef, Cuateron Reef, and Gaven Reefs have all been expanded on since Chinese officials reclaimed the waters earlier this year, though the Fiery Cross Reef is the only island large enough for an airfield.
Jin Zhirui, a colonel with the Chinese air force command, declined to confirm plans to build an airfield on the reef but said China needed to build facilities in the South China Sea for strategic reasons.
'We need to go out, to make our contribution to regional and global peace.
'We need support like this, including radar and intelligence.'
THE SOUTH CHINA SEA DISPUTE OVER ARCHIPELAGO DISCOVERED BY BRITISH SAILOR CAPTAIN RICHARD SPRATLY
The dispute centres around hundreds of tiny shoals, reefs and islets in the South China Sea known as the Spratlys and the Paracels.
Several south Asian countries stake claim to the territory, though China tries to control the largest portion of the archipelago.
Beijing has claimed its right to the collection of land masses is 2,000 years old which, they say, includes the islands in Chinese history.
Taiwan supports its claim, and has its own airfield on the island of Taiping.
Vietnamese officials say their government has ruled over the land since the 17th century whilst the Philippines, the closest geographically, says the islands belong to them.
In 1974, Chinese forces seized the Paracels from Vietnam, killing 70 troops.
There were further clashes between the two countries in 1988, with 60 Vietnamese soldiers killed.
In 2012 China and the Philippines were embroiled in a lengthy maritime standoff over a Scarborough Shoal.
The Filipino military employed its largest warship for the dispute over the stretch of water which they call Panatag.
Upon boarding a Chinese military vessel for inspection, officials claimed they found live sharks, clams and illegal reef.
Later, Vietnamese border agencies refused to stamp passports asserting Chinese sovereignty over a handful of the islands and in January it was claimed China would be taken to a UN tribunal to challenge its stake.

Taiping Zoo is special in its own way. It is located in a lovely natural setting in Taiping Lake Gardens close to the foot of the Larut Hill (Maxwell Hill). The beautiful natural setting with streams, lakes and abundance of flora gives the zoo a unique advantage of being able to use nature to its best.
'Taman Mergastua Sultan Idris Shah' or the Taiping Zoo, which is located at the Lake Gardens in Taiping, is the only Zoo in the North of Peninsular Malaysia. Covering an area of 34 acres, the Taiping Zoo has embarked on an expansion programme which includes the building of new "Open Concept" animal enclosures. These enclosures which take into consideration the natural habitat of the respective animal, has been favourably received by the public-both for its inherent beauty and thoughtful design.
Taiping Zoo is currently home to more than 180 species of animals totalling - 1,300 individuals. These include Tigers, Lions, Elephants, Hippopotamus, Giraffes, Hornbills, Orang Utans and others. Furthermore, attempts to breed these animals have been very successful.

A Frontier in the South Sea
A Frontier in the South Sea
Issued by Construction and Planning Agency,Ministry of the Interior, R.O.C.
105th National Day, Republic of China
10th October is the national day for the Republic of China (สาธารณรัฐ ประชาชน จีน; 中華民國), Chinese also call this day as “Double Tenth Day (雙十節)” or “Double Tenth Festival (สองครั้งที่สิบ)”, the Republic of China (สาธารณรัฐ ประชาชน จีน; 中華民國) was establish by Dr. Sun Yat-sen (ดร ซุน ยัต-เซ็น; 孫逸仙博士) on 10th October, 1911 (๑๐ ตุลาคม พ. ๒๔๕๔), it is also the first democratic republic in the Asia, this record has been kept for 37 years, while the second democratic republic (i.e.: Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), a.k.a.: North Korea) was establish on 9th September, 1948 (๙ กันยายน พ. Coincidentally, both nations are still exist in this world; but most of their territories were lost unfortunately!
