In this video we ride on Vlocity VL53 for a complete real-time journey on the $3.65 billion Regional Rail Link. Opened in various stages between the 14th October 2013 & 21st June 2015, the project separated regional V/Line trains from Metro trains in Melbourne's west, giving the regional Ballarat, Bendigo and Geelong trains their own dedicated tracks.
The first section of the new line saw a new pair of tracks built between Southern Cross & Sunshine with the second section consisting of new tracks between Deer Park & West Werribee for Geelong trains, with new stations at Tarneit & Wyndham Vale.

After years of planning, construction and disruption for commuters, the $3.65 billion Regional Rail Link project is now complete. On the 21st June 2015 the final stage of the project opened which saw the new line for V/Line Geelong trains open with two new stations at Tarneit and Wyndham Vale.
In this video we see some of the first timetabled passenger trains to use the new rail line at Tarneit and Wyndham Vale stations, the latter being where we see the very first timetabled passenger train to use the new line at 7:20am. We mostly see 6 car V/Locities but we also see N Class loco hauled trains on Warrnambool services.

Regional Rail Link is a landmark infrastructure project designed to remove major bottlenecks in Victoria's rail network. It does this by untangling metropolitan and regional tracks as they travel through Melbourne's west into the heart of the city.
Dedicated regional tracks have been built from West Werribee Junction to Deer Park, then along the existing rail corridor from Sunshine to Southern Cross Station. Passengers on the Geelong, Bendigo and Ballarat lines now have a streamlined journey through the metropolitan system.
The $3.65 billion dollar project was jointly funded by the Australian and Victorian governments.
Regional Rail Link increased the size of Victoria's rail network by laying 90km of new track. The project also included:
* two new stations at Wyndham Vale and Tarneit
* a rebuilt West Footscray railway station
* a rebuilt Sunshine railway station
* a major upgrade to Footscray railway station
* improvements to the entrance and forecourt at Tottenham station
* two new platforms at Southern Cross Station
* removal of two level crossings at Anderson Road in Sunshine
* 13 road and rail grade separations through Wyndham Vale and Tarneit
* construction of a new rail bridge over the Maribyrnong River
Regional Rail Link creates capacity for an extra 23 metropolitan and 10 regional services during each morning and evening peak period. This means capacity for an additional 54,000 passenger trips each day.
As well as improving existing services, Regional Rail Link lays the foundations for future expansion of the rail network to meet the needs of Victoria's growing population.

Regional Rail Link is a landmark infrastructure project designed to remove major bottlenecks in Victoria's rail network. It does this by untangling metropolitan and regional tracks as they travel through Melbourne's west into the heart of the city.
It starts at West Werribee Junction where the Geelong line now meets the new tracks through the growing suburbs. Along this entirely new rail line two new stations have been built and opened at Wyndham Vale and Tarneit. Thirteen grade separations have also been built.
The new line meets the Ballarat line in Deer Park. From Sunshine new dedicated regional tracks continue into the city. Sunshine station and West Footscray station have been rebuilt. Tottenham station has had improvements to the entrance and forecourt. Footscray station has had a major upgrade with two new platforms. Four road bridges in Footscray have also been rebuilt.
The dedicated tracks flyover the Werribee line and cross a new bridge over the Maribyrnong River before continuing into Melbourne. The tracks take regional trains either across the North Melbourne flyover or straight ahead into the new platforms 15 & 16 at Southern Cross Station.

I caught this one from Market East on the way back from a meeting, so I didn't catch the train number. The video starts right before Manayunk station from the last seat in the rear carriage since it was occupied until then. The return trip has some of the start of the return plus the parts I missed on the up trip. Video cuts in areas thanks to the NEX5's infamous overheating problem.

August 2014: This flyover video shows the latest aerial view of the Regional Rail Link project.
The video starts at the West Werribee Junction where the new rail over rail bridge and the new rail over road bridge is complete. It follows the eventual alignment of the new railway line through Wyndham Vale (including the cutting on the approach to Manor Lakes Blvd where the new station has been built) and Tarneit (where the new station can be seen). Numerous road over rail crossings and waterway crossing structures can also be seen in this area.
The new rail then joins the existing rail corridor near Deer Park and follows it in to Southern Cross Station. Major works in this section include the rebuilt Sunshine railway station, the Anderson Road level crossing grade separations, the new West Footscray railway station, the upgraded Footscray station with two new platforms, and the new Maribyrnong River rail bridge.

France's national rail company SNCF ordered 2,000 new trains to expand its regional rail network, but they are reportedly too large to enter older stations dating from the 1950s.
The error seems to have happened because the national rail operator RFF gave to train company SNCF only the dimensions of platforms built less than 30 years ago, but, according to Reuters, most of France's platforms were built more than 50 years ago.
According to Le Figaro, approximately 1,300 platforms are now being reconfigured to give the new trains room to pass through.
The repair work has reportedly already cost €80 million euros ($110 million).
A spokesman for the RFF national rail operator confirmed the error.
'We discovered the problem a bit late, we recognise that and we accept responsibility on that score," Christophe Piednoel told France Info radio.
Transport Minister Frederic Cuvillier blamed an "absurd rail system" changed by France's previous government in 1997 for the problem, Reuters reported.
"When you separate the rail operator (RFF) from the user, SNCF, it doesn't work," he said.

Regional rail is passenger rail transport services that operate between towns and cities. It operates with more stops and lower distances than does inter-city rail, but fewer stops and faster than commuter rail. Other terms include local train and stopping train. Regional rail operate beyond the limits of urban areas, and either connect similarly sized smaller cities and towns, or connect cities to the surrounding towns, outside or at the outer rim of the suburban belt.
Regional rail normally operates with an even service load throughout the day, although slightly increased services may be provided during rush-hour. The service is less oriented around bringing commuters to the urban centers, although this may generate part of the traffic on some systems. Other regional rail services operate between two large urban areas, but make many intermediate stops.
The main difference between regional rail and commuter rail is that the latter is focused on moving people between where they live and where they work on a daily basis. Regional rail operates outside major cities. Unlike inter-city, it stops at most or all stations. It provides a service between smaller communities along the line, and also connections with long-distance services. Regional rail typically operates throughout the day but often at low frequency (once per hour or only a few times a day), whereas commuter rail provides a high-frequency service within a conurbation.

Dedicated regional tracks have been built from West Werribee Junction to Deer Park, then along the existing rail corridor from Sunshine to Southern Cross Station. Passengers on the Geelong, Bendigo and Ballarat lines now have a streamlined journey through the metropolitan system.
The $3.65 billion dollar project was jointly funded by the Australian and Victorian governments.
Regional Rail Link increased the size of Victoria's rail network by laying 90km of new track. The project also included:
* two new stations at Wyndham Vale and Tarneit
* a rebuilt West Footscray railway station
* a rebuilt Sunshine railway station
* a major upgrade to Footscray railway station
* improvements to the entrance and forecourt at Tottenham station
* two new platforms at Southern Cross Station
* removal of two level crossings at Anderson Road in Sunshine
* 13 road and rail grade separations through Wyndham Vale and Tarneit
* construction of a new rail bridge over the Maribyrnong River
Regional Rail Link creates capacity for an extra 23 metropolitan and 10 regional services during each morning and evening peak period. This means capacity for an additional 54,000 passenger trips each day.
As well as improving existing services, Regional Rail Link lays the foundations for future expansion of the rail network to meet the needs of Victoria's growing population.

France's national rail company SNCF ordered 2,000 new trains to expand its regional rail network, but they are reportedly too large to enter older stations dating from the 1950s.
The error seems to have happened because the national rail operator RFF gave to train company SNCF only the dimensions of platforms built less than 30 years ago, but, according to Reuters, most of France's platforms were built more than 50 years ago.
According to Le Figaro, approximately 1,300 platforms are now being reconfigured to give the new trains room to pass through.
The repair work has reportedly already cost €80 million euros ($110 million).
A spokesman for the RFF national rail operator confirmed the error.
'We discovered the problem a bit late, we recognise that and we accept responsibility on that score," Christophe Piednoel told France Info radio.
Transport Minister Frederic Cuvillier blamed an "absurd rail system" changed by France's previous government in 1997 for the problem, Reuters reported.
"When you separate the rail operator (RFF) from the user, SNCF, it doesn't work," he said.

January 2014: This flyover video shows the construction currently taking place as part of the Regional Rail Link project including the works that were carried out during the December/January rail line closure.
The video starts at the West Werribee Junction where the new rail over rail bridge and the new rail over road bridge is mostly complete. It follows the eventual alignment of the new railway line through Wyndham Vale (including the cutting on the approach to Manor Lakes Blvd where the new station is being built) and Tarneit (where the new station can be seen). Numerous road over rail crossings and waterway crossing structures can also be seen.
The video then follows the existing corridor from Deer Park Sunshine to Southern Cross Station. Major works in this section include the new Sunshine railway station building, the new West Footscray railway station, the Anderson Road level crossing grade separations, works underway at the Footscray station, and the new Maribyrnong River rail bridge.

The number of people reporting being raped by someone they met on a dating app or website has risen six-fold in five years, official figures show. There were 184 rape allegations in 2014, up from 33 in 2009, the National Crime Agency (NCA) said.
