Louis Isadore Kahn (born Itze-Leib Schmuilowsky) (March 5 [O.S. February 20] 1901 – March 17, 1974) was an American architect, based in Philadelphia. After working in various capacities for several firms in Philadelphia, he founded his own atelier in 1935. While continuing his private practice, he served as a design critic and professor of architecture at Yale School of Architecture from 1947 to 1957.
From 1957 until his death, he was a professor of architecture at the School of Design at the University of Pennsylvania. Kahn created a style that was monumental and monolithic; his heavy buildings for the most part do not hide their weight, their materials, or the way they are assembled. Louis Kahn's works are considered as monumental beyond modernism. Famous for his meticulously built works, his provocative proposals that remained unbuilt, and his teaching, Kahn was one of the most influential architects of the twentieth century. He was awarded the AIA Gold Medal and the RIBA Gold Medal. At the time of his death he was considered by some as "America's foremost living architect."

Design demands that one understands the order. An architect can build a house and build a city in the same breath, if he only thinks about it as being a marvelous expressive inspired expressive realm. Design is to put into being what Form tells us. Form is what is detected as the nature of something. Design strives to at that moment employ the laws of nature to put it into being.

My Architect: A Son's Journey is a 2003 documentary film about the American architect Louis Kahn (1901-1974), by his son Nathaniel Kahn, detailing the architect's extraordinary career and his familial legacy after his death in 1974. In the film, Louis Kahn is quoted as saying “When I went to high school I had a teacher, in the arts, who was head of the department of Central High, William Grey, and he gave a course in Architecture, the only course in any high school I am sure, in Greek, Roman, Renaissance, Egyptian, and Gothic Architecture, and at that point two of my colleagues and myself realized that only Architecture was to be my life. How accidental are our existences are really, and how full of influence by circumstance.” The film features interviews with renowned architects, includ...

This was not a SCI-Arc event, but took place at the 1972 IDCA International Design Conference Aspen. The clip begins with a four minute title sequence, accompanied by Louis I. Kahn’s voice. Kahn’s live lecture begins at 04:16. Kahn defines architecture in terms of beauty, wonder, and expression. He describes material as a manifestation of spent light and argues that there is no such thing as architecture, but only the spirit of architecture. He discusses his work on the Salk Institute and his collaboration with Jonas Salk and Luis Barragán.

Jatiyo Sangsad Bhaban is the National Assembly Building of Bangladesh, located in the capital Dhaka. It was created by architect Louis Kahn and is one of the largest legislative complexes in the world. It houses all parliamentary activities of Bangladesh. First, Muzharul Islam was given to design Jatiyo Sangshad Bhaban by the government. But, Islam brought his teacher Louis Kahn into the project to do a significant work for future generation. Muzharul Islam assisted Kahn at the project. According to Robert McCarter, author of Louis I. Kahn, it "is one of the twentieth century's greatest architectural monuments, and is without question Kahn's magnum opus." The architect drew upon and assimilated both the vernacular and monumental archetypes of the region, and abstracted and transformed, t...

Though not numerous, Louis Kahn’s buildings have become veritable icons of 20th Century architecture. His works, including the Yale Art Gallery, the Salk Institute, the First Unitarian Church of Rochester, the National Assembly Building in Bangladesh, the Phillips Exeter Academy Library, the Kimbell Art Museum, and Four Freedoms Park in New York City have helped define Modernism. His masterful use of bold geometric forms, skillful manipulation of natural light, and artistic control of architectural expression resulted in richly layered spatial experiences. This lecture will detail Kahn’s life and body of work.
