WHEN I was on my way to Holiday Inn Clark recently for the Padang Food Festival, I could not help but think that years ago, I frequented the place. Literally, I almost grew up with it. I remember featuring most of its activities and promotions in the past and have become close with Mimosa people way, way back ... Padang food is the cuisine of the Minangkabau people and is famous for its variety and rich taste of coconut milk and spices....

Padang is actually the capital city of West Sumatra province and as they all serve Minangkabau food back in the province, no restaurant calls itself a “Padang restaurant” ... Minangkabau food court at Block F in Tanah Abang may be less well known, but they have won the hearts of Minangkabau people across the city, many of whom are traders in Southeast Asia’s largest textile market....

Many Minangkabau youngsters migrated to Jakarta to work as traders and they had to put that “communication skill” to good use to convince buyers so that they could take food home ... Although far from home, Minangkabau people still retain their traditions and their communal sense of belonging and often join the Gebu Minang organization....
