Duma is a 2005 drama adventure film, directed by Carroll Ballard. It stars Alexander Michaletos, Eamonn Walker, Hope Davis and Campbell Scott. The film is a fictional adaptation loosely based upon the autobiographical book How It Was with Dooms by Carol Cawthra Hopcraft and Xan Hopcraft.
Set in the country of South Africa, the story begins with a cheetah cub being orphaned after his mother was killed by lions. The cub is found on the side of the road by a young boy named Xan (Alexander Michaeletos) and his father Peter (Campbell Scott). Initially reluctant to take in a wild animal, Peter agrees to let Xan take care of the cub. They name him “Duma”, the Swahili name for “cheetah”. Over the years, Duma becomes a part of the family, being closely raised by Xan. As he nears adulthood, Peter and Xan decide to teach Duma how to run by having him chase alongside Peter’s motorcycle, which can barely keep up with him. But with Duma almost fully grown, to Xan’s dismay, his father tells him that it is time to take his friend to his real home before he grows too old to survive in his native habitat. His father says to Xan, “Duma has to live the life he was born to – or he’ll never be fully alive.”

Plot
A nightmarish vision of a post-apocalyptic England, where the fractured factions and tribes of the new world try to cope with the chaos that has ensued from a worldwide collapse. Four prisoners, and thus slaves to the most prominent faction 'The Front' escape their buildings only to be hunted down by the gas-mask-donning assassin, only known as 'Duma'. As they flee through their memories, dreams, and nightmares, the figure follows them through the wilderness and battles whole factions, leaving a trail of corpses in his wake. The Writer (one of the prisoners) is reunited with his sister only to find her way out of the island, leaving him damned and broken as the figure destroys the civilization he longed for.
Plot
When a big family faces tough challenges, some fall apart and some triumph over what life throws at them. Siri ya Mtungi's cast of colorful characters, related by blood or marriage, or simply by love, make up a community that is inspired by love, brought down by fear, superstition and betrayal, lifted by comedy and joy, and strengthened by the intimate bonds of family and friendship. It's a story of relationships won and lost. Between busy Dar es Salaam and the laconic streets of Bagamoyo, we get behind closed doors into the lives of Cheche and his wife Cheusi, daughter of well-known community leader, and polygamist, Mzee Kizito, as well as characters like deejay Duma, amorous Lulu, viperous Farida, lecherous Masharubu, and many more.
Plot
During a nightly Porsche ride with his doting rascal Xan, white South African farmer Peter finds and adopts an orphaned cheetah cub, dubbed Duma (just Swahili for cheetah). It becomes the boy's inseparable playmate, even taking it to bed. Peter made clear from the start that the cheetah should be returned to the wild before its full adulthood. But the father is stricken down with a disease just before the cheetah could be returned. Xan's mother sells the farm and moves in with a city aunt. The cheetah escapes, but finds Xan at school, where the new boy is bullied. He decides to run away to the mountains with Duma. On the way they face countless perils, which courage, Xan's intelligence and Duma's instinct overcome.

Some friendships are wilder than others.
Ripkuna: Your cheetah is a great hunter. I'm very impressed... he caught an egg!
Ripkuna: That is a place of many teeth, my friend.
Ripkuna: People go when they are ready to go, not when you are. We are all just travelers on the same river, grandparents, parents, sons and daughters. We all have our time on the river. We do what we can before we disappear.
Xan: Love doesn't stop when time passes, or you live in different places, or sombody's gone.::Xan: That's how it was with me and Duma.
[last lines]::Xan: [voiceover narration] There are things you know without knowing. For Duma, it was his wildness. For Rip, his family. For me, it was my dad. Everything he was, everything he believed in is now part of me. I was taking Duma home, but he took me somewhere too. Finding Duma's true home brought me back to mine and showed me that love doesn't stop when time passes or you live in different places or somebody's gone. That's how it was with me and Duma.
Xan: [observing Peter as he is biting a flower] What on earth are you doing?::Peter: Well, this is simple. You just grab a shaker, fill it up, stuff in the flower and you have... a bottle.::Tourist #1: [brings a bowl of milk] Here you are.::Peter: Cheers! [pours the milk into a pepper shaker and straps the flower to it]::Xan: [the cub bites him] Ah! He's feisty, dad.::Peter: See if this helps. [hands Xan the bottle and clicks his tongue to coax the cub]::Xan: [the cub begins to drink a little bit] Hey, he's drinking it!::Peter: Good.::Xan: Black streaks all along his face. You know what that means?::Peter: What?::Xan: A cheetah!::Peter: A cheetah? Yeah. How long would you like to keep him, Xan? Of course there is something you need to realize... we can't keep him like we keep the others. One day we'll set him lose, when he's big enough.
Xan: My father, he died recently. How can someone just disappear like that? Forever.

When a poem still unwritten makes its way through space
its determined to be seated in a mental case
that will give it all the nurishment it needs
to grow into an epic of great altitude
to make the virgins wet by beeing b****** crude
and lyrically complex to who may read
chorus
plauge is beeing human beeing
haunt the shadows of their dreams
i'll born
i'll be long
i'll be gone
before you breathe
human beeing is a disease
haunt the shadows of their dreams
i'll born
i'll be long
i'll be gone
before you breathe
when a picture is to horrible to make headlines
it will stay inside the head of those who lay their eyes
on the evidence of memories of crime
it will stay until the picture is a mantelpiece
a manifest of hedonism and it wont cease
