Gauteng (/ɡaʊˈtɛŋ/ or /xaʊˈtɛŋ/; Sotho pronunciation [xɑ́.ú.ˈtʼè.ŋ̀]) is one of the nine provinces of South Africa. It was formed from part of the old Transvaal Province after South Africa's first all-race elections on 27 April 1994. It was initially named Pretoria-Witwatersrand-Vereeniging (or PWV) and was renamed 'Gauteng' in December 1994.
Situated in the heart of the Highveld, Gauteng is the smallest province in South Africa, with only 1.4% of the land area, but it is highly urbanised, containing the cities of Johannesburg and Pretoria. As of 2007[update], it had a population of nearly 10.5 million, making it the most populous province in South Africa.
The name Gauteng comes from the Sesotho word meaning "Place of Gold", the historical Sesotho name for Johannesburg and surrounding areas. This referred to the thriving gold industry in the province following the 1886 discovery of gold in Johannesburg. The Sesotho word is a locative derived from the Afrikaans goud (gold) plus the locative suffix "-ng." When properly pronounced, the first letter of the name Gauteng is a voiceless velar fricative, pronounced similarly to the "ch" in the German achtung or Scottish loch and the same as the Dutch "g" or the Spanish "g" as in gente. This pronunciation is natural in both the Sesotho and Afrikaans languages.

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (Xhosa pronunciation: [xoˈliːɬaɬa manˈdeːla]; born 18 July 1918) is a South African politician who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999, the first ever to be elected in a fully representative democratic election. Before being elected President, Mandela was a militant anti-apartheid activist, and the leader and co-founder of Umkhonto we Sizwe, the armed wing of the African National Congress (ANC). In 1962 he was arrested and convicted of sabotage and other charges, and sentenced to life imprisonment. Mandela went on to serve 27 years in prison, spending many of these years on Robben Island. Following his release from prison on 11 February 1990, Mandela led his party in the negotiations that led to the establishment of democracy in 1994. As President, he frequently gave priority to reconciliation, while introducing policies aimed at combating poverty and inequality in South Africa.
In South Africa, Mandela is often known as Madiba, his Xhosa clan name; or as tata (Xhosa: father). Mandela has received more than 250 awards over four decades.

On Monday, shops in the Maponya mall, Soweto, and the Northgate mall were robbed. A group of six men were involved in robbing security guards collecting money from inside the Maponya mall. One of the men fired a shot at the entrance.
At Northgate mall, two men forced the manager of the cellphone store into the back office and robbed the store.
The iStore at Centurion Mall was robbed of goods worth over R1m on 22 August.
On 13 August, the iStore at Cresta mall in Johannesburg was robbed. One person was injured when the gang made their getaway. In all the other robberies nobody was hurt.
On Saturday, a G4S security guard was shot dead when four men robbed them of cash they had collected from the Diepkloof Black Chain shopping centre in Soweto.

Pretoria was named after Andries Pretorius, a Boer strategies who beat the Zulu. The first war between the English and Boer to get independence ended with the defeat of the English. But 18 years later, they had a decisive victory and they ruled all over the South African republic.
It's interesting that the later prime minister, the young Churchan took part as a correspondent in the second Boer war. The sites of Pretoria remind us of the two wars even today. Paul Kruger was the respected President of the country between the two wars. In Church Wit, we can find the simple house where he lived for seven years. The entrance is guarded by two marble lions. The furniture looks as if the President had just stood from his desk.
In one of the rooms, the copy of the room in which he died during his exile in Switzerland has been furnished. Behind the house, a locomotive has been displayed that he traveled around the country in during his seven active years. In the street named after Kruger, we can find the red bricked church and the town hall with the Pretoria statues in its yard.
The brown statue of President Kruger has been placed in the main square called church square. Statues made in Italy stood in a store houses a secret for a long time. It was stood up only after the second Boer war. The square has always been a heart of the town. In the middle of the square, there's a small church around which markets and auctions where held for long time.
In the square, we can find the palace of justice and the building of the old parliament with the clock tower. The peace agreement closing the English Boer war was signed into the Victorian building of Melrose house in May 1902.
Boer Trekker monument is six kilometers from the town center. The imposing work was made in memory of the battle of Blood River where the Boer beat the Zulu at last. Further way above forty kilometers from Pretoria, we can see premiere diamond mine which is famous because the biggest diamond of the world was found here.
It took cutters from Amsterdam two years to make the diamonds called the star of Africa and the smaller star of Africa from the 3,106 karat precious stone which belongs to the British royal crown. The crown can be admired in the treasury of the towel of London. In the main square full of life hawkers offer fast food for example boiled or roasted corn.

Johannesburg (Afrikaans pronunciation: [joˈhɑnəsˌbʏrx]) also known as Jozi or Jo'burg, is the largest city in South Africa. Johannesburg is the provincial capital of Gauteng, the wealthiest province in South Africa, having the largest economy of any metropolitan region in Sub-Saharan Africa. The city is one of the 40 largest metropolitan areas in the world[5] and it is one of Africa's only three global cities, the other two being Cairo and Cape Town.[6]. While Johannesburg is not officially one of South Africa's three capital cities, it does house the Constitutional Court South Africa's highest court.
Johannesburg is the source of a large-scale gold and diamond trade, due to its location on the mineral-rich Witwatersrand range of hills. Johannesburg is served by O.R. Tambo International Airport, the largest and busiest airport in Africa and a gateway for international air travel to and from the rest of southern Africa.
According to the 2007 Community Survey, the population of the municipal city was 3,888,180 and the population of the Greater Johannesburg Metropolitan Area was 7,151,447. A broader definition of the Johannesburg metropolitan area, including the Ekhuruleni, the West Rand, Soweto and Lenasia, has a population of 10,267,700. The municipal city's land area of 1,645 km2 (635 sq mi) is very large when compared to other cities, resulting in a moderate population density of 2,364 /km2 (6,120 /sq mi).
Johannesburg once again includes Soweto, which was a separate city from the late 1970s until the 1990s. Originally an acronym for "SOuth-WEstern TOwnships", Soweto originated as a collection of settlements on the outskirts of Johannesburg populated mostly by native African workers in the gold mining industry. The Rietvlei Nature Reserve is located in Pretoria and is about 3,800 hectares (38 km2)[1] in size. Located within the reserve is the Rietvlei Dam.
The Rietvlei Nature Reserve surrounds and include the Rietvlei dam and is situated south east of Pretoria, in the Gauteng Province of South Africa, between the R21 highway (OR Tambo Airport highway) on the western side and the R50 (Delmas / Babsfontein) road on the north-east (Figure 2.2). The site lies in the quarter degree grid square 2528CD (Rietvlei Dam), between 25º50’S and 25º56’S latitude and 28º15'E and 28º19'E longitude. The mean elevation above sea level is approximately 1 525 meters, with the highest point at 1 542 m and the lowest point at 1 473 m (at the dam’s outflow). The reserve covers a surface area of approximately 3 870 ha or 38 km² and a network of roads cross the entire area, which makes the reserve accessible to visitors and management.

Both indigenous and exotic species of trees can be found in the reserve.

There are an estimated 319 species of birds that make use of the reserve, of which 272 species have been confirmed.[3]
Mammals[edit]
The reserve carries around 1600 individual mammals. Blesbuck, Black wildebeest, Red Hartebeest, Eland, Common zebra, Waterbuck, Reedbuck, Springbuck, Mountain Reedbuck, Steenbok, Grey Duiker, Oribi, Leopard, Buffalo, White Rhino, and Hippopotamus can all be found in the reserve.[2][4] Currently there are also 4 lionesses and a lion kept in a separate enclosure on the reserve.

Threats to the reserve[edit]
The reserve is situated in Gauteng, one of the highest population density areas in South Africa. As such it is constantly under threat by human expansion and development.
The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality's proposed Benoni landfill site.[5]

Johannesburg - Gauteng police commissioner Lesetja Mothiba will brief the media on Tuesday on the recent spate of shopping mall robberies in the province. On Monday night, a robbery at a cellphone store at the Glen shopping centre in Ormonde, Johannesburg, was the sixth robbery of shop in a mall in the past two months. "The suspects stole cellphones and fled the scene," said Captain Doniah Mothutsane. Since November last year, the mall's Samsung, iStore, and Vodacom shops have been robbed. A Telkom store at the Kolonade mall in Montana, Pretoria, was robbed of electronic goods worth over R200 000 last Tuesday. On Monday, shops in the Maponya mall, Soweto, and the Northgate mall were robbed. A group of six men were involved in robbing security guards collecting money from inside the Maponya mall. One of the men fired a shot at the entrance. At Northgate mall, two men forced the manager of the cellphone store into the back office and robbed the store. The iStore at Centurion Mall was robbed of goods worth over R1m on 22 August. On 13 August, the iStore at Cresta mall in Johannesburg was robbed. One person was injured when the gang made their getaway. In all the other robberies nobody was hurt. On Saturday, a G4S security guard was shot dead when four men robbed them of cash they had collected from the Diepkloof Black Chain shopping centre in Soweto.- published: 10 Sep 2014
