An ethnic group is a group of people who share a common ethnicity. That is, its members identify with each other through a common heritage, consisting of a common culture, including a shared language or dialect. The group's ethos or ideology may also stress common ancestry, religion, or race.
The process that results in the emergence of an ethnicity is called ethnogenesis.
The terms ethnicity and ethnic group are derived from the Greek word ἔθνοςethnos, normally translated as "nation". The terms refer currently to people thought to have common ancestry who share a distinctive culture.
Herodotus is the first who stated the main characteristics of ethnicity in the 5th century BC, with his famous account of what defines Greek identity, where he lists kinship (Greek: ὅμαιμον - homaimon, "of the same blood"), language (Greek: ὁμόγλωσσον - homoglōsson, "speaking the same language"), cults and customs (Greek: ὁμότροπον - homotropon, "of the same habits or life").
The term "ethnic" and related forms from the 14th through the middle of the 19th century were used in English in the meaning of "pagan, heathen", as ethnikos (Greek: ἐθνικός, literally "national") was used as the LXX translation of Hebrew goyim "the nations, non-Hebrews, non-Jews".

There, we attended a Toraja funeral, an event that they have become an amazing ritual of several days. We dive into the wonderful world that lies behind the coral reef that runs through large part of the Indonesian archipelago. And finally we boarded on the Bajau (sea gypsies) houseboats who live in even closer contact with the sea. In fact, they could not conceive of life without it.

The documented history of the Yoruba people begins with the Oyo Empire, which became dominant in the early 17th century. The peoples who lived in Yorubaland, at least by the seventh century BC, were not initially known as the Yoruba, although they shared a common ethnicity and language group. The historical Yoruba develop in situ, out of earlier (Mesolithic) Volta-Niger populations, by the 1st millennium B.C.E. Oral history recorded under the Oyo Empire derives the Yoruba as an ethnic group from the population of the older kingdom of Ile-Ife. Archaeologically, the settlement at Ife can be dated to the 4th century BC, with urban structures appe

Inside, they make sure that the palm trunk, which will represent the reptile’s tail, moves properly.
The men of these societies in Sepik subject themselves to real torture. With several hundred cuts, their skin takes on the appearance of that of their reptilian gods. The incisions around the nipples represent the eyes of the crocodile. Those on the shoulders, the torso, the upper arm and the back symbolise other parts of the crocodile’s body.
Our cameras move through the branches of the crocodile nest. Inside, seven naked men exhibit the two water drums: feminine and masculine.

The ‘mud men’ tribe live near Goroca, along the upper reaches of the Asaro river. Their strange means of defence is to turn into spirits and frighten off their enemies.
For this, they make these masks of mud which, with their grotesque, exaggerated features.
Once they have finished their masks, the warriors daub their bodies with mud, which they will later dye grey with another, more liquid, type of mud.
They also decorate their waists with ferns which, spread with mud, take on an ethereal appearance, making the ghostly figures look even more convincing.
According to the legend, these methods of invoking the gods began a long time in the past. The Asaro were being hunted by the most numerous of their enemies. Then, one of the ancients, a man called Pukiro Pode,
had a dream in which he saw the image of grey, terrifying spirits. That same night they made the first masks of mud. The men attached bamboo canes to their fingers, like long fingernails, and daubed their bodies with mud.
Shortly before sunrise, in the shadows of the forest, the mud ghosts approached the enemy lines, with slow, sinuous movements. When they saw them, their enemies fled, terrified, and the Asaro were saved.

The Dinka are a Nilotic ethnic group from South Sudan. They live from the tenth century on both sides of the Nile River and speak a language belonging to the Nilo-Saharan group. They are about three million and are divided into about 21 groups, each with its own legitimate leader.
Although farming has always been its main economic resource, there has never missed an important agricultural and fishing activity that allowed them to be self-sufficient in food. Their trade and light industry are increasingly gaining importance.
Photographers Carol Beckwith and Angela Fisher have an experience of over 30 years recording ceremonies, rituals and daily life of African tribal peoples. His photographs reflect a long and deep relationship of respect for the customs and people of these tribes, especially those of the Dinka:

The Akhas were the bigger producer of opium in Laos and they could earn the small money they needed from the narco-traffickers. In order to fight this illegal commerce, the government relocated most of their villages along the main roads and converted their production to the rattan cane. The Akhas sell it on the market where all ethnic groups of Laos gather to trade. This video casts a suggestive look on the fragmented ethnic composition of Laos and shows how its peoples live nowadays.
In Laos, Slush and Burn is a primitive agricultural system still in use to grow the "dry rice". After a few years the plantation need to be moved for the loss of productivity, but at least this method does not involve any chemical fertilizers. In this way, the waters of the rivers are not polluted and are suitable for all daily uses. When the village is to be transferred the Zoema, the chief of the community, finds the new location by interpreting a "special omen": the braking of an egg.
Herbs are another very important resource in Laos, both for healing and cooking. As an example, there is one herb that improves sex (although only for men..) while another one named Kalanka stops diarrhea...

Indonesia. Bajau (Sea Gypsies Tribe) | Tribes & Ethnic Groups
In this documentary we travel to Indonesia, the Sulawesi island, there we know the Toraja and Bajau, two ethnic groups who have a very particular culture and traditions.

The inhabitants of Sulawesi have always had a very close relationship with the sea.
These men belong to the Bugui ethnic group, considered the best boat builders and sailors in the Indian Ocean. But there is another ethnic group which lives in even closer contact with the sea. In fact, they could not conceive of life without it. That group is the Bajau.
At the other end of the island, in the calm waters of the Gulf of Tomini, these nomads have for centuries conquered the sea. They live out their lives on these small, fragile boats called leppas, where they are born, marry, reproduce and die. In them they move along the coast, propelled by the winds and the currents, and rarely set foot on dry land.
Their origins remain unknown, though some anthropologists believe they come from the south of the Malaysian peninsula.
Since then, innumerable legends have surrounded these the Sea Gypsies
They rarely venture far from the coast. Their lives are spent fishing close by the mangrove swamps and the coral reefs. Here, they find almost everything they need.
The Bajau know many different fishing methods, but perhaps the most curious of all is this one, fishing with kites.
The technique they use is simple but very effective. It consists of attaching a hook to the kite, which is made from fern leaves, and with the help of a pole, the fisherman can move the hook as far out as he wants.
The swaying of the kite keeps the bait in constant movement, attracting above all the flying fish.
The government tried to house the first families along the coast, but they were unable to adapt to dry land, and soon returned to their boats. Then, the Bajau suggesting building the village over the sea, and so Torosiaji was born.
Though the greatest number of Bajaus live in Sulawesi, there are also groups of them in Myanmar, where they are called Moken, or ‘the people drowned by the sea’; in Thailand, they are known as the Chao Nam, or ‘water people’, and they can also be found along the coasts of the Philippines and Vietnam. 16:50:00 The mosque and the school are the only buildings in Torosiaji standing on dry land. Well, not exactly dry land, because they have been build on foundations made of coral.
At midday, the waters are very shallow, and this is when the Bajau comb the sea bottom in search of food.
Their basic diet is fish and rice. The rice they buy in the markets on the coast, where once a week the women go to sell the fish they have caught, and buy basic necessities such as fresh water.
The Bajau are also magnificent divers, and can remain underwater for over five minutes, and dive down up to 15 metres.

Archaeologically, the settlement at Ife can be dated to the 4th century BC, with urban structures appearing in the 12th century (the urban phase of Ife before the rise of Oyo, ca. 1100-1600, is sometimes described as a "golden age" of Ife).

In Papua New Guinea live a thousand different ethnic groups.
Some tribes practiced cannibalism and other head cut off their enemies. The natives attacked travelers and islands eventually becoming a scary place. The tribes were isolated keep alive their customs and traditions.
In this documentary we will know their kitchen (old pressure cooker), body painting rituals, weapons of war manufactured by themselves, mummification of the bodies of warriors, courtship ceremonies, customs of the crocodile men ...
Go deep with us in this jungle that joins the purest of nature and the fiercest of their tribes
---
These mysterious lands which seem to rise out of the clouds are the Highlands, in the east of the island of New Guinea, to the north of Australia. The western half of the island is Irian Java, part of Indonesia, and this, the eastern half, is Papua New Guinea. The country includes over 1,400 islands, both large and small
In PNG, as this country is popularly known, there are around a thousand distinct ethnic groups, speaking over eight hundred different languages. The fierce nature of these tribes, the practice of cannibalism and the fact that some groups cut off the heads of their enemies all this made the island a fearful place, which travellers tried to avoid.
This region is very rugged, a series of mountains reaching heights of up to 4,000 metres, and forming numerous valleys of dense vegetation, where the different ethnic groups live practically isolated from each other.
The majority of the villages are inhabited by just one family, or a single clan. The houses are made of bamboo, with rooves of palm leaf. Without a doubt, the rough Highland terrain, and the extremely warlike nature of these tribes, always in conflict with their neighbours, have contributed to the great ethnic variety we still find today.
Each group decorates their bodies in different ways specific, characteristic colours and designs.
They paint themselves for many different ceremonies, but perhaps the most typical is the sing-sing,
a ceremony at which they dance and sing. Sing–sings are organised to celebrate many different things, though some take place on specific days each year, and for these many different tribes come together, arriving from even the most remote villages.
The bird of paradise is now a protected species, and can only be hunted with bow and arrow before the sing-sing. The highlander peoples are proud and maintain their customs and traditions. Despite the daily impact of western influence, they never miss an opportunity to show off their feathers.

Indonesia. Toraja Funeral (Buffalo Fight) | Tribes & Ethnic Groups
After two hours bumping along the road, the catafalque finally arrives at the place Mayanna’s family have constructed to hold the funeral ceremony.
The most surprising thing is the party atmosphere. It is difficult to imagine, especially for westerners, that we are at a funeral. But this also forms part of the ritual – the families of the dead man and his widow compete over the catafalque to demonstrate the strength of the clan.

▶ Documentary. "Indonesia.The Ghosts of Sulawesi" http://pdoc.es/SulawesiPL
With spirits somewhat calmer, the catafalque is taken down to transfer the coffin to the sanctuary.
Once it has been placed inside, with the head pointing west, the funeral can officially begin. From now on, and for five days, the peace of Kete will be broken as never before.
The sound of the gong marks the rhythm of the ceremony and little by little the atmosphere becomes more solemn.
Mayanna’s grandchildren line up to receive the condolences and to thank the guests for their presence. The protocol is very important and many rules have to be respected so that no one feels offended. In the background, the widows remain sitting beside the coffin, cooking food which they offer to the dead man. An invitation to visit the deceased is a real honour and it is considered impolite to say no; if you accept, you will have to ask the dead man for permission to leave, just as if he were still alive.
Each group of guests is preceded by their offerings. This is the perfect time to demonstrate how well you are doing in life, and there are constant exclamations at the number of animals a single individual is capable of giving, or the size of some of the pigs, like this one – it is all ten men can do to get it out of the van.
The quality of the gifts is inspected and duly registered. In the past, they would be simply etched in the memories of the old people, but today every detail is carefully written down.
The most appreciated, without a doubt, are the albino buffalos, which here are called Tedong Bonga and can cost over two hundred thousand pesetas, a fortune if we consider that the average salary of a civil servant is scarcely fifteen thousand pesetas a month. Funerals are a good occasion to settle certain debts. In Tana Toraja, a gift received now is seen as a debt that must be paid back later. The gifts the deceased’s family receives will have to be repaid in the future by attending other funerals for years to come.
Once the guests have been shown to their places, one of the highlights will begin – the buffalo fight.
The Toraja people are proud to test the bravery of the buffalos, and demonstrate that the deceased will be accompanied to heaven by such powerful and courageous animals.
The second day of the funeral is coming to an end. Mayanna’s family is very happy with the gifts they have received, and it is time to repay the guests for their generosity. The young women hand out honey cakes, tea, coffee, rice and palm wine.

The second day of the funeral is coming to an end. Mayanna’s family is very happy with the gifts they have received, and it is time to repay the guests for their generosity. The young women hand out honey cakes, tea, coffee, rice and palm wine.

Essar Foundation runs school for tribal children in Odisha
The state of Odisha is home to several aboriginal tribes. Foremost among them is the Juang community that is part of the Munda ethnic group. The Juangs consider themselves as true aborigines—distinct from other primitive tribes, like Santhals or Hos. They primarily reside in the district of Keonjhar and are skilled in making baskets and other bamboo-based artifacts.
The Essar Foundation runs a residential school, the Ramadevi Adarsha Bidya Niketan, in Keonjhar’s remote Telkoi block. The school provides free education and life skills to 70 children, in the age group of 4 years to 12 years, from the Juang tribe. These children hail from very

Ethnic Tensions Undermine Efforts to Defeat Islamic State
Ethnic tensions in Iraq and Syria appear to undermine efforts to defeat Islamic State. Iraq's army depends on cooperation with local militias to drive out the radical militants from the country's north. But while the armed ethnic groups fight to reclaim territory from the terrorists, they also clash among themselves, adding to a growing humanitarian crisis. VOA's Zlatica Hoke reports on the shifting alliances.

Raute are a nomadic ethnic group officially recognized by the Government of Nepal. They are known especially for their hunting of langur and macaque monkeys for subsistence. They also gather wild forest tubers, fruits, and greens on a regular basis. They normally do no gardening, farming, or work for others as tenants or wage laborers. To obtain grain, iron, cloth, and jewelry, they trade handmade wooden bowls and boxes to local farmers. They do not sell other forest products, bushmeat, or forest medicinal plants

These children hail from very poor families; some are raised by relatives who struggle to provide for them with their meagre incomes. The school is run in association with a local NGO, the Ramadevi Village Development Organisation, which was founded by Tulasi Munda, a renowned tribal woman leader.
Says Parvati Parida, one of the schoolteachers, “Our caretakers and teachers work closely with these children to impart life skills, healthy sanitary habits and language competency. The children are encouraged to perform some daily chores, like grooming themselves, keeping their surroundings clean and growing vegetables. More importantly, they are provided mainstream education in a clean and safe environment. The community here believes in the school’s vision and hopes that these children’s futures will be secured through the education and care they receive—and truly deserve.”

In the village of Timbumeri, on the southern shore of lake Chambri, the garamut tom-toms sound out,
announcing the initiation ceremony of the crocodile men. From dawn, all the men of the village start work, preparing the ritual. By the river, beside the tambaran, they build a crocodile nest. The uninitiated, and the women, are not allowed to see what happens inside this area which represents the heart of the spirit of the king of crocodiles.
The warrior chief beats the ground with his ceremonial tail. The initiate is led into the tambaran. Lying on a board, and aided by an acolyte, the initiate awaits the contact of the knife.
He will have eaten narcotic plants. The initiate is led to the nest of the great spirit. He is now a crocodile man.

Largest Growing Ethnic Group Hardly Acknowledged In Media
"Asian Americans are the fastest growing minority group in the U.S. -- but you'd never know it from watching the nation's Sunday talk shows.
A new report from think tank ChangeLab analyzed 26 weeks' worth of the five big Sunday shows -- "Face The Nation," "Fox News Sunday," "Meet The Press," "State Of The Union," and "This Week"-- from Jan. 1 through June 30 of 2013.
The group found that, over the course of 130 episodes, Asian Americans were only discussed a total of 13 times."* The Young Turks host Cenk Uygur breaks it down.

Dinka, a Wonderful Nilotic Ethnic Group from Sudan

Asian & Pacific Islander Blood Drive & Bone Marrow Registration
Did you know that less than 1% of the Asian/Pacific Islander community donates blood?
Giving blood is very important, especially for this ethnic group, since some patients of API descent require a closer blood match than that provided by the typical ABO positive/negative blood typing. Blood that closely matches a patient's ethnicity is less likely to be rejected by the patient and provides fewer risks for complications.
As a result, we are asking you to support us in increasing the number of available blood donors from this community.
