Longtime favourite Thomas Bach was elected President of the International Olympic Committee on Tuesday, keeping the powerful sports body in European hands. Bach, a 59-year-old German lawyer, succeeds Jacques Rogge, the Belgian who is stepping down after 12 years. "It's the first time that an Olympic champion has been elected to be IOC President," Bach said after being announced as President, "And this is what you can expect, that I will put sport in the centre of all our attention." Bach won gold at the Montreal Olympics in 1976 in fencing and heads Germany's national Olympic committee, becoming the ninth president in the 119-year history of the IOC. Rogge said he was, "proud to be able to hand him over an IOC that is in a good state." Bach defeated five rival candidates in the secret balloting. He received 49 votes in the second round to secure a winning majority. Richard Carrion of Puerto Rico finished second with 29 votes. Carrion, who chairs the IOC's finance commission and negotiates lucrative US television rights deals, wound up being Bach's only serious challenger with 29 votes. When asked by a journalist if he enjoyed the presidential campaign, he replied, "Well enjoying is not a word that comes to mind at this point, I would have enjoyed it a bit more if I had won the gold medal, there's no silver at this competition." "I think I have to go on a diet now after all these lunches and dinners," the Puerto Rican banker said while laughing. Bach received a standing ovation for nearly a full minute after Rogge opened a sealed envelope to announce his victory. Bach bowed slightly to the delegates to acknowledge the warm response and thanked the members in several languages. After Carrion the votes dwindled, with Ng Ser Miang of Singapore getting six, Denis Oswald of Switzerland five and Sergei Bubka of Ukraine four. C.K. Wu of Taiwan was eliminated in the first round after an initial tie with Ng as low vote winner. Bach's first big challenge will be the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, to be held 7-23 February. The build-up has been overshadowed by cost overruns, security worries and an international outcry over a Russian law against gay "propaganda". International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge presents the first London 2012 medals to Queen Elizabeth II. The first medals of the London 2012 Olympic Games were handed out on Monday (23rd July), four days before the opening ceremony. The commemorative set of gold, silver and bronze medals was presented by the President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Jacques Rogge to Britain's Queen Elizabeth II at a Buckingham Palace reception. IOC representatives from around the world were welcomed to the royal residence by the Queen and her husband Prince Phillip, the Duke of Edinburgh. Two of the royal couple's children were also present, Princess Anne, herself a former Olympian, and Prince Andrew. Addressing the gathered IOC representatives, the queen said that hosting the Olympics had inspired young people and communities around the country. She said this was well demonstrated by the welcome given to Olympic torchbearers as the flame travelled around the country. Rogge expressed confidence that London would "stage very good Games for the athletes" and "leave a tangible and intangible sustainable legacy". Rogge gave his most extensive public comments on China's political situation in an interview with The Associated Press in Ancient Olympia, where he was attending the flame-lighting ceremony for the Beijing Games. The ceremony was disrupted by pro-Tibetan and press freedom activists and seven people were detained. Rogge and the International Olympic Committee have come under pressure to speak out about the crackdown in Tibet and China's record on human rights, Darfur, freedom of speech and other issues as the games approach. During the interview, Rogge reiterated his long-standing position that the IOC is not a political organisation and cannot interfere in the internal affairs of China. "We have expressed our deep concern for what happens in Tibet. We've also of course expressed the wish that this should be resolved peacefully as soon as possible," he said. "Violence is not compatible with Olympic values," he added. He said the IOC would stick to the line on the situation in Tibet taken by international leaders. "Both United States of America, European Union and also yesterday the Pope, (referring to Pope Benedict XVI) have just called for a peaceful resolution and for a restraint on violence, and this is exactly (the) same words as used by the International Olympic Committee," Rogge added. The violence in Tibet has brought China's policies to the fore as the games approach. Rogge contested claims that the human rights situation in China has deteriorated since the IOC gave the games to Beijing in 2001 and insisted China's human rights record has improved. Reacting to speculation there may be a boycott of the games by governments, Rogge said there was no "credible momentum whatsoever" for any Olympic boycott over Tibet. Rogge cited only one reason why the games could be postponed - air quality.
