Moktar Belmoktar organized an attack on the plant to grab foreign worker hostages to trade for Jihadist prisoners in the U.S. and Saudi Arabia. The Algerians had been fighting Jihadists since the 1990s when over 150,000 Algerians were killed. Le Contreterrorisme en Algerie - The Death of French Algeria
Le Contre Terrorisme en Algerie 1954-1962. This is a remarkable video. Had it been made years ago, when passions engendered by the Algerian war had not yet been decanted, Harrison, having revealed too many secrets, might have fallen victim to an OAS car bomb, or some other dreadful surprise, such as a "fusillade."Harrison tells us how he tracked down and interviewed surviving officers of the OA

Algeria and the Sahel in the Arab Spring Aftermath
Following the Arab Spring protests in 2011, North Africa experienced one disruptive event after another, which spilled over into the Sahel. Tunisia’s dictator fell and the country held elections, Egypt overthrew Mubarak only to have the Muslim Brotherhood led government ousted, the United States intervened in Libya which has since devolved into an ongoing armed conflict, and jihadists took over tw

It is the story of the French General Charles de Gaulle's election as French President and his role in the Algerian War.
About the Algerian War:
The Algerian War, also known as the Algerian War of Independence or the Algerian Revolution (Arabic: الثورة الجزائرية), was a war between France and the Algerian independence movements from 1954 to 1962, which led to Algeria gaining its independence from France. An important decolonization war, it was a complex conflict characterized by guerrilla warfare, maquis fighting, terrorism, the use of torture by both sides, and counter-terrorism operations. The conflict was also a civil war between loyalist Algerians supporting a French Algeria and their insurrectionist Algerian Muslim counterparts.
Effectively started by members of the National Liberation Front (FLN) on November 1, 1954, during the Toussaint Rouge ("Red All Saints' Day"), the conflict shook the foundations of the weak and unstable French Fourth Republic (1946–58) and led to its replacement by the Fifth Republic with a strengthened Presidency, with Charles de Gaulle acting in the latter role. Although the military campaigns led against Algerian nationalists were complete successes, with most prominent FLN leaders killed or arrested and terror attacks effectively stopped, the brutality of the methods employed failed to win hearts and minds in Algeria, alienated support in Metropolitan France and discredited French prestige abroad.
In 1961, President Charles de Gaulle decided to give up Algeria, although it was regarded as an integral part of France, after conducting a referendum showing huge support for Algerian independence. The planned withdrawal led to a state crisis, to various assassination attempts on de Gaulle, and some attempts of military coups. Most of the former were carried out by the Organisation de l'armée secrète (OAS), an underground organization formed mainly from French military personnel supporting a French Algeria, which committed a large number of bombings and murders in both Algeria and the homeland to stop the planned independence.
Upon independence, in 1962, 900,000 European-Algerians (Pieds-noirs) fled to France, in fear of the FLN's revenge, within a few months. The majority of Algerian Muslims who had worked for the French, were disarmed and left behind as the treaty between French and Algerian authorities declared that no actions could be taken against them. However, the Harkis in particular, having served as auxiliaries with the French army, were regarded as traitors by the FLN and between 50,000 and 150,000 Harkis and family members were murdered by the FLN or lynch-mobs, often after being abducted and tortured.

The story of Algeria's past, present and future - from independence to the Arab Spring and beyond. Algeria was under French colonial rule for 132 years. From tears of joy at independence in 1962 to the tragic civil war of the 1990s and the anger that culminated in the Arab Spring, this series provides a unique insight into a country notoriously inaccessible to both journalists and filmmakers. Interviews with key players like Ben Bella, Ait Ahmed and President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, cover 50 years of tragic and powerful history from the Evian Accords of 1962 to the Arab Spring of 2011. This is the story of Algeria's past, present and future. Era of Tempests
In October of 1988, the Algerian army opened fire on protesters, killing 500 civilians. This brutal attack sparked uprisings that in-turn prompted the government to abandon three decades of single-party socialism in favour of a multi-party system. Journalists and citizens celebrated their new-found freedom. Thirty years after independence, Algeria became the site of what many call the 'first Arab Spring' after Algerians demanded democracy and social and economic equality. Political freedom allowed Islamist movements to garner more support. The Islamic Salvation Front (FIS), which gathered momentum under the one-party system because of its grounding in religion rather than politics, had gained increasing support during the 1990 municipal election. Then, in 1991, it won almost half of the votes in the first round of the legislative election. Fearing a majority win for the FIS, the military stepped in and halted the democratic electoral process. It forced Chadli Bendjedid, then president, to abdicate and presented his resignation as voluntary. The second round of elections were cancelled and Mohamed Boudiaf, who had returned after a 27-year exile in Morocco, became Algeria's new leader as the chairman of the High Council of the State, a figurehead body for the ruling generals. Boudiaf tried to bring the parties together but quickly made enemies. And after his assassination in 1992, terrorist attacks increased and Algeria spiralled into a decade of civil war that claimed thousands of lives.

Moktar Belmoktar organized an attack on the plant to grab foreign worker hostages to trade for Jihadist prisoners in the U.S. and Saudi Arabia. The Algerians had been fighting Jihadists since the 1990s when over 150,000 Algerians were killed. The Algerian Army refused to negotiate and ruthlessly recaptured the plant and killed 29 of 32 Jihadists, and took the other 3 into custody. 27 of the foreign workers were also killed; 7 survived. There is a $5 Million dollar reward for the information leading to Belmoktar.

Le Contre Terrorisme en Algerie 1954-1962. This is a remarkable video. Had it been made years ago, when passions engendered by the Algerian war had not yet been decanted, Harrison, having revealed too many secrets, might have fallen victim to an OAS car bomb, or some other dreadful surprise, such as a "fusillade."Harrison tells us how he tracked down and interviewed surviving officers of the OAS's command structure as well as the "menu fretin," gunmen who carried out the "ponctuelles," slayings ordered by the OAS of FLN militants as well as of the Gaullist "barbouzes" or spooks, undercover agents sent by the Interior Ministry in Paris to dismantle the Organization and kill its operatives. Harrison became the OAS's confidant. He explains what kinds of people they were: deserters from the "réserve opérationnelle" of the regular army and the Foreign Legion, tired of never ending defeats, die-hard Petainists left over from the Occupation as well as acolytes of the fascist lowbrow, Pierre Poujade, which went to show, observes Harrison, that ideologies, moribund in metropolitan France, took on a new life when they crossed the Mediterranean. The majority of the unconditional supporters of OAS counterterrorism were proletarian whites living in the slatternly neighborhoods of Algiers and Oran, and who had, in many cases, played soccer in their youth with the Muslims of the FLN against whom they later took up arms. Harrison knew both the patriots and thugs of the OAS who were angry at FLN killings and at its grisly promise of "the suitcase or the coffin," and at De Gaulle who, having returned to power with the army's support in 1958 on a pledge to keep Algeria French, reversed himself less than a year later by declaring, in a speech that made the pied noir settlers tremble, that Algeria would be independent. What distinguishes his video from other documentaries on the subject is its precision. Through pain-staking research and zealous fact checking, Harrison identifies the names and show the faces of those bitter-enders who took part, in the waning days of French rule, in atrocious paramilitary operations against the FLN. This inside account of the war to save French Algeria is a timeless, invaluable contribution to history, a learning moment for professional historians as well as aficionados. No one interested in the final, agonizing days of French rule in Algeria and the end of France's colonial tradition could ask for more.

The Algerian War, also known as the Algerian War of Independence or the Algerian Revolution was a war between France and the Algerian independence movements from 1954 to 1962, which led to Algeria gaining its independence from France. As an important decolonization war, it was a complex conflict characterized by guerrilla warfare, maquis fighting, terrorism, the use of torture by both sides, and counter-terrorism operations. The conflict was also a civil war between loyalist Algerians supporting a French Algeria and their insurrectionist Algerian nationalist counterparts. Upon independence, in 1962, 900,000 European-Algerians (Pieds-noirs) fled to France, in fear of the FLN's revenge, within a few months. The government was totally unprepared for the vast number of refugees, causing turmoil in France. About 91,000 managed to flee to France, some with help from their French officers acting against orders, and today they and their descendants form a significant part of the Algerian-French population.
In 1956 and in 1958, two young men that didn’t know each other had to go to fight in Algeria; this is their story.

France Since 1871 (HIST 276)
France's colonial territories were of very high importance after the embarrassment of occupation during World War II. Algeria, in particular, was a complicated case because it involved large numbers of French settlers, the pieds-noirs. Despite international support for Algerian independence, right-wing factions in the military and among the colonizers remained committed to staying the course. After Charles de Gaulle presided over French withdrawal, the cause of the pieds-noirs has remained divisive in French political life, particularly on the right.

Following the Arab Spring protests in 2011, North Africa experienced one disruptive event after another, which spilled over into the Sahel. Tunisia’s dictator fell and the country held elections, Egypt overthrew Mubarak only to have the Muslim Brotherhood led government ousted, the United States intervened in Libya which has since devolved into an ongoing armed conflict, and jihadists took over two-thirds of Mali which they later lost in a French intervention. Yet one country, Algeria, has remained relatively stable while simultaneously pushing aggressively for diplomatic solutions to regional conflicts.
New America is pleased to welcome Hannah Armstrong, a writer and New America International Security Program fellow who is based in Algeria and who has seven years of experience researching North African and Sahel political and security dynamics, for a discussion of Algeria’s muscular foreign policy in the region and why we should not expect an Algerian Arab Spring anytime soon.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_African_Campaign
During the Second World War, the North African Campaign took place in North Africa from 10 June 1940 to 13 May 1943. It included campaigns fought in the Libyan and Egyptian deserts (Western Desert Campaign, also known as the Desert War) and in Morocco and Algeria (Operation Torch) and Tunisia (Tunisia Campaign).
The campaign was fought between the Allies and Axis powers, many of whom had colonial interests in Africa dating from the late 19th century. The Allied war effort was dominated by the British Commonwealth and exiles from German-occupied Europe. The United States entered the war in 1941 and began direct military assistance in North Africa on 11 May 1942.
Fighting in North Africa started with the Italian declaration of war on 10 June 1940. On 14 June, the British Army's 11th Hussars (assisted by elements of the 1st Royal Tank Regiment, 1st RTR) crossed the border from Egypt into Libya and captured the Italian Fort Capuzzo. This was followed by an Italian counteroffensive into Egypt and the capture of Sidi Barrani in September 1940 and then in December 1940 by a Commonwealth counteroffensive, Operation Compass. During Operation Compass, the Italian 10th Army was destroyed and the German Afrika Korps—commanded by Erwin Rommel—was dispatched to North Africa—during Operation Sonnenblume—to reinforce Italian forces in order to prevent a complete Axis defeat.
A see-saw series of battles for control of Libya and parts of Egypt followed, reaching a climax in the Second Battle of El Alamein when British Commonwealth forces under the command of Lieutenant-General Bernard Montgomery delivered a decisive defeat to the Axis forces and pushed them back to Tunisia. After the late 1942 Allied Operation Torch landings in North-West Africa, and subsequent battles against Vichy France forces (who then changed sides), the Allies finally encircled Axis forces in northern Tunisia and forced their surrender.
Operation Torch in November 1942 was a compromise operation that met the British objective of securing victory in North Africa while allowing American armed forces the opportunity to engage in the fight against Nazi Germany on a limited scale. In addition, as Josef Stalin had long been demanding a second front be opened to engage the Wehrmacht and relieve pressure on the Soviet armies, it provided some degree of relief for the Eastern front by diverting Axis forces to the African theatre, tying them up and destroying them there.
Information gleaned via British Ultra code-breaking intelligence proved critical to Allied success in North Africa. Victory for the Allies in this campaign immediately led to the Italian Campaign, which culminated in the downfall of the fascist government in Italy and the elimination of a German ally...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sikorsky_H-19
The Sikorsky H-19 Chickasaw, (also known by its Sikorsky model number, S-55) was a multi-purpose helicopter used by the United States Army and United States Air Force. It was also license-built by Westland Aircraft as the Westland Whirlwind in the United Kingdom. United States Navy and United States Coast Guard models were designated HO4S, while those of the U.S. Marine Corps were designated HRS. In 1962, the U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Marine Corps versions were all redesignated as H-19s like their U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force counterparts...
The H-19's first flight was on November 10, 1949 and it entered operations in 1950. Over 1,000 of the helicopters were manufactured by Sikorsky for the United States. An additional 550 were manufactured by licensees of the helicopter including Westland Aircraft, the Société nationale des constructions aéronautiques du sud-est (SNCASE) in France and Mitsubishi in Japan.
The helicopter was widely exported, used by many other nations, including Portugal, Greece, Israel, Chile, South Africa, Denmark and Turkey.
In 1954 the Marines tested an idea to assist the rotors lift better in hot or high climates and if the helicopter was overloaded, by installing a rocket nozzle at the tip of each rotor blade with the fuel tank located in the center above the rotor blade hub. Enough fuel was provided for seven minutes of operation.
Operational history
The H-19 Chickasaw holds the distinction of being the US Army's first true transport helicopter and, as such, played an important role in the initial formulation of Army doctrine regarding air mobility and the battlefield employment of troop-carrying helicopters. The H-19 underwent live service tests in the hands of the 6th Transportation Company, during the Korean War beginning in 1951 as an unarmed transport helicopter. Undergoing tests such as medical evacuation, tactical control and front-line cargo support, the helicopter succeeded admirably in surpassing the capabilities of the H-5 Dragonfly which had been used throughout the war by the Army.
The U.S. Air Force ordered 50 H-19A's for rescue duties in 1951. These aircraft were the primary rescue and medical evacuation helicopters for the USAF during the Korean War. The Air Force continued to use the H-19 through the 1960s, ultimately acquiring 270 of the H-19B model.
France made aggressive use of helicopters in Algeria, both as troop transports and gunships, Piasecki/Vertol H-21 and Sud-built Sikorski H-34 helicopters rapidly displaced fixed-wing aircraft for the transport of paras and quick-reaction commando teams. In Indochina, a small number of Hiller H-23s and Sikorsky H-19s were available for casualty evacuation. In 1956, the French Air Force experimented with arming the H-19, then being superseded in service by the more capable Piasecki H-21 and Sikorsky H-34 helicopters. The H-19 was originally fitted with a 20-mm cannon, two rocket launchers, plus a 20-mm cannon, two 12.7-mm machine guns, and a 7.5-mm light machine gun firing from the cabin windows, but this load proved far too heavy, and even lightly armed H-19 gunships fitted with flexible machine guns for self-defense proved underpowered.
The H-19 was also used in the early days of the Vietnam War before being supplanted by the Sikorsky H-34 Choctaw, which was based on the H-19...

Undergoing tests such as medical evacuation, tactical control and front-line cargo support, the helicopter succeeded admirably in surpassing the capabilities of the H-5 Dragonfly which had been used throughout the war by the Army.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_African_Campaign

Operation Torch (initially called Operation Gymnast) was the British-American invasion of French North Africa during the North African Campaign of the Second World War which started on 8 November 1942.
The Soviet Union had pressed the United States and United Kingdom to start operations in Europe and open a second front to reduce the pressure of German forces on the Soviet troops. While the American commanders favored Operation Sledgehammer, landing in Occupied Europe as soon as possible, the British commanders believed that such a course would end in disaster.
An attack on French North Africa was proposed instead, which would clear the Axis powers from North Africa, improve naval control of the Mediterranean Sea, and prepare for an invasion of Southern Europe in 1943. American President Franklin D. Roosevelt suspected the African operation would rule out an invasion of Europe in 1943 but agreed to support British Prime Minister Winston Churchill...
