In 1965, Jimmy Cross had his only chart hit, a novelty called I Want My Baby Back. It was issued on Tollie records, which, being a subsidiary of Vee Jay Records, was close to bankruptcy. Somehow the record managed to make it to #92 on Billboard and #81 on Cash Box's charts. After one more release on Tollie, being another novelty, he switched to Chicken Records (also a subsidiary of Vee Jay), for a tune that was not a novelty, this song, Hey Little Girl (Do Ya Wanna Get Married) (sometimes shown on the 45 as Hey Little Girl (Do You Want To Get Married)). It is interesting to note that Harry Nilsson is one of the writers of this tune. This song bombed, and it was soon picked up by Red Bird records and placed on the B side of yet another novelty. And with that release, Jimmy Cross' recording career was over. Jimmy (or Jimmie as he was sometimes credited), passed away in 1978 from a heart attack at the age of 39. His lone hit has become a cult favorite, and the rest of his recorded output is seemingly forgotten, but gems like this can still be discovered today. Enjoy!

After one more release on Tollie, being another novelty, he switched to Chicken Records (also a subsidiary of Vee Jay), for a tune that was not a novelty, this song, Hey Little Girl (Do Ya Wanna Get Married) (sometimes shown on the 45 as Hey Little Girl (Do You Want To Get Married)). It is interesting to note that Harry Nilsson is one of the writers of this tune. This song bombed, and it was soon picked up by Red Bird records and placed on the B side of yet another novelty. And with that release, Jimmy Cross' recording career was over. Jimmy (or Jimmie as he was sometimes credited), passed away in 1978 from a heart attack at the age of 39. His lone hit has become a cult favorite, and the rest of his recorded output is seemingly forgotten, but gems like this can still be discovered today. Enjoy!

He was born in Dothan, Alabama, and became the producer of the syndicated radio series Country Concert.
"I Want My Baby Back" was originally issued on the Tollie label and reached #92 on the Billboard Hot 100 in February 1965. The song is a parody of teenage death records of that period, particularly The Shangri-Las hit "Leader of the Pack". It has since become a cult classic as a result of frequent airplay on the Dr. Demento show. The singer narrates a traffic crash initially similar to the one described in J. Frank Wilson's "Last Kiss", but is revealed to be another angle of the fatal crash at the climax of "Leader of the Pack"; the singer is the sole survivor, and his girlfriend was fatally dismembered by the impact ("Over there was my baby.. and over there was my baby.. and way over there was my baby"). After months of unabated grief, the distraught singer, in an apparent fit of insanity, decides that he is going to have his girl back "one way or another". Black's debut U.S. single, "Unless You Care", was released in 1964, when Black was 15.[1] The song was written and produced by P.F. Sloan and Steve Barri and featured backing from Glen Campbell and Leon Russell, who were at that time studio musicians.[2] The song was a major hit in Canada and also cracked the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, and Black was awarded the "Male Vocalist of the Year" award at the Maple Music Awards in 1965.[2]
Black had several further singles through 1966, such as the Sloan-Barri tunes "Kisses for My Baby" and "Say It Again", Sam Cooke's "Only Sixteen", and "Baby's Gone" (written by Graham Bonney and Barry Mason), all of which were produced by Sloan and Barri.[3] He released a Sloan-Barri produced album, Only Sixteen in 1965, on the Canadian ARC Records label.[3] Black then moved to the U.S., and his remaining unreleased tracks (plus some alternate versions of released songs) were assembled into another Sloan-Barri produced album, The Black Plague, in 1966.[3] However, a hoped-for film career failed to materialize, and Black returned to Canada.[4]

Black's debut U.S. single, "Unless You Care", was released in 1964, when Black was 15.[1] The song was written and produced by P.F. Sloan and Steve Barri and featured backing from Glen Campbell and Leon Russell, who were at that time studio musicians.[2] The song was a major hit in Canada and also cracked the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, and Black was awarded the "Male Vocalist of the Year" award at the Maple Music Awards in 1965.[2]
Black had several further singles through 1966, such as the Sloan-Barri tunes "Kisses for My Baby" and "Say It Again", Sam Cooke's "Only Sixteen", and "Baby's Gone" (written by Graham Bonney and Barry Mason), all of which were produced by Sloan and Barri.[3] He released a Sloan-Barri produced album, Only Sixteen in 1965, on the Canadian ARC Records label.[3] Black then moved to the U.S., and his remaining unreleased tracks (plus some alternate versions of released songs) were assembled into another Sloan-Barri produced album, The Black Plague, in 1966.[3] However, a hoped-for film career failed to materialize, and Black returned to Canada.[4]

"Rockin' Little Angel" took a portion of its melody from the 1844 song "Buffalo Gals". The record sold over one million copies, earning a gold disc. Smith often recorded material written by Charlie Rich, and was heavily influenced by Elvis Presley.
Most of these tracks were released on JUDD label which was set up by Jud Phillips brother of Sam when he left SUN
