7: Heaven’s Gate
Formed in 1974, Heaven’s Gate was a religious group from San Diego that believed planet Earth was going to be recycled & that their survival depended on leaving our planet as soon as possible. So on March 26th, 1997, authorities discovered 39 bodies from the group, who committed a mass suicide. Its group members believed that by killing themselves, they could reach a spacecraft following Comet Hale-Bopp to safety. The group formed in 1974, two years after Marshall Applewhite & Bonnie Nettles met to discuss their beliefs in extraterrestrials, particularly as they related to the teachings of Saint Francis of Assisi, who taught that the world was beautiful & good but needed to be destroyed in order to purify it of sin. Based on this belief, the pair was certain that the world would be destroyed & recycled in the near future. They recruited a number of followers over the years, hoping to someday contact extraterrestrials in order to escape Earth’s destruction. The group began giving up all earthly possessions & earthlike characteristics, soon detaching themselves from all of their belongings & friends. They were under the impression that their bodies were mere vessels in their journey to the “Next Level.” Thus, the 39 cult members killed themselves in order to reach the supposed extraterrestrial spacecraft that would lead them to safety.
6: The Branch Davidians
The Branch Davidians are a religious cult formed in 1955 as an offshoot of the Davidian Seventh-Day Adventists. The group is perhaps best known for their involvement in the infamous Waco siege of 1993, in which 76 of its cult members were killed, including their leader David Koresh. The group was originally formed in 1955 when Benjamin Roden was expelled from the Seventh-Day Adventist for his supplemental teachings, as he claimed he was a prophet. He warned of the second coming of Christ, claiming he could raise the dead. When Roden died, his wife, Lois, took over & had an affair with David Koresh. Upon her death, she named Koresh to be her successor instead of her son, George. The group faced a power struggle & Koresh ultimately won the majority of the support. By 1993, the group continued to radicalize to the point where they were preparing to fight the supposed army of Babylon. It was because of this that the FBI suspected them of owning illegal weapons at their compound in Waco, Texas. After issuing a search & arrest warrant, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (or ATF) tried raiding the compound, at which point the Branch Davidians opened fire & killed two agents while losing four of their own. As a result, the FBI surrounded the compound & laid siege for 51 days. The siege ended in a shootout between the FBI, ATF, & Branch Davidian members. 76 members of the group were killed, including David Koresh himself.

The Order of the Solar Temple is a secret society loosely associated with the Knights Templar. While their exact origins are unclear, they are believed to have been inspired by Julien Ortigas, a French right-wing activist in 1968. Believing the earth was about to be destroyed, many cult members decided to depart from the planet by killing themselves from 1994 to 1997, while others were killed as part of the ritual, including a three-month old infant. 1994: Cult members die in 'mass suicide'
The bodies of 48 cult members have been discovered by Swiss police following an apparent mass suicide.

Twenty-three of the bodies were found in a concealed chamber beneath a remote farmhouse in the village of Cheiry, 48 miles north-east of Geneva.
A further 25 bodies, including some children, were recovered in three burnt-out chalets in Granges-sur-Salvan, 47 miles east of Geneva, near the Italian border.
The deaths have been linked to the apocalyptical Order of the Solar Temple sect, which was founded in 1984 by Dr Luc Jouret and Joseph di Mambro.
The Order of the Solar Temple condones the mass stock-piling of weapons to prepare for the end of the world.
Just hours before the grisly discoveries in Switzerland, the bodies of two more people, also believed to be linked to the sect, were found in Quebec, Canada, in a burnt-out apartment owned by Dr Jouret.
It is not known yet whether either of the cult leaders are among the dead, but the Swiss authorities have said they are searching for two people in connection with the deaths.
Gunshot wounds
In Cheiry, emergency services were called to the farmhouse after locals reported a fire.
Initially they only discovered the body of the farm's owner, 73-year-old Alberto Giacobino, who was lying dead on a bed with a plastic bag over his head. He had also been shot.
The concealed chamber, covered in mirrors, was discovered during a search of the property for further bodies.
Many of the bodies were found with gunshot wounds and plastic bags over their heads. Others were found clasping their hands in prayer. Most of the bodies were clad in ceremonial robes.
According to rescuers, champagne bottles littered the floor and the victims were lying in a star formation.
On a make-shift altar within the chamber there was a rose, a cross and a picture of Mr Jouret. The sect's motto is "Rose Eternal Cross."
Plastic bags of petrol and gas cylinders wired up to explode by a telephone signal were found although the system had failed to work. It is thought a second fire was started manually elsewhere in the building.
A similar timer device had also been rigged up in Granges-sur-Salvan. However, it is thought the dead may have been drugged or poisoned before the fires began.
Local people in both idyllic villages had no idea that cult members had been living in their midst and have been left shocked by the events of the past 24 hours.
Similarities are being made to events in Jonestown in Guyana in 1978 when 914 people led by the Reverend Jim Jones, committed suicide in a jungle clearing.
And just last year in Waco, Texas 80 members of the Branch Davidian sect, led by David Koresh, died after fire broke out during a siege.

Order of the Solar Temple
The Order of the Solar Temple, also known as Ordre du Temple Solaire (OTS) in French and the International Chivalric Organization of the Solar Tradition or simply as The Solar Temple, is a secret society that claims to be based upon the ideals of the Knights Templar. OTS was started by Joseph Di Mambro and Luc Jouret in 1984 in Geneva as l'Ordre International Chevaleresque de Tradition Solaire (OICTS) and later renamed Ordre du Temple Solaire.
Some historians allege that the Solar Temple originates with French author Jacques Breyer, who established a Sovereign Order of the Solar Temple in 1952. In 1968, a schismatic order was renamed the Renewed Order of the Solar Temple (ROTS) under the leadership of French right-wing political activist Julien Origas.
The OTS is perhaps most notorious for being associated with a series of murders and mass suicides in 1994 and '95 that claimed several dozen lives.

Knights Templar
The Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon (Latin: Pauperes commilitones Christi Templique Salomonici), commonly known as the Knights Templar, the Order of Solomon's Temple (French: Ordre du Temple or Templiers) or simply as Templars, were among the wealthiest and most powerful of the Western Christian military orders and were prominent actors in Christian finance. The organisation existed for nearly two centuries during the Middle Ages.
Officially endorsed by the Roman Catholic Church around 1129, the Order became a favoured charity throughout Christendom and grew rapidly in membership and power. Templar knights, in their distinctive white mantles with a red cross, were among the most skilled fighting units of the Crusades. Non-combatant members of the Order managed a large economic infrastructure throughout Christendom, innovating financial techniques that were an early form of banking, and building fortifications across Europe and the Holy Land.
The Templars' existence was tied closely to the Crusades; when the Holy Land was lost, support for the Order faded. Rumours about the Templars' secret initiation ceremony created distrust, and King Philip IV of France, deeply in debt to the Order, took advantage of the situation. In 1307, many of the Order's members in France were arrested, tortured into giving false confessions, and then burned at the stake. Under pressure from King Philip, Pope Clement V disbanded the Order in 1312. The abrupt disappearance of a major part of the European infrastructure gave rise to speculation and legends, which have kept the "Templar" name alive into the modern day.

Luc Jouret
Luc Jouret (18 October 1947 – 5 October 1994), born in Kikwit, Belgian Congo, was a Belgian religious group leader in Switzerland. He co-founded the Parti Communautaire Européen with Jean Thiriart, a leading member of the neo-Nazi Jeune Europe Belgian group. Later, Jouret also founded the Order of the Solar Temple also known as the Order of the Solar Tradition) with Joseph Di Mambro in 1984. He committed suicide in the Swiss village of Salvan in October 1994, leading to a mass suicide of his followers.
Biography
Jouret was born on 18 October 1947 in what was then the Belgian Congo, Africa. His Belgian parents returned to their homeland in the 1950s, and Jouret attended the Free University of Brussels from which he received his medical degree. During his college years he also became a Marxist, a fact that placed him under police surveillance. Two years after graduation, in 1976, he joined the Belgian Army and became a paratrooper. While in the army he participated in a famous action in Zaire to rescue some Europeans whose lives had become threatened in the newly independent nation.

1994: Cult members die in 'mass suicide' The bodies of 48 cult members have been discovered by Swiss police following an apparent mass suicide. http://news.bbc.co.uk/onthisday/hi/dates/stories/october/5/newsid_3933000/3933957.stm Twenty-three of the bodies were found in a concealed chamber beneath a remote farmhouse in the village of Cheiry, 48 miles north-east of Geneva. A further 25 bodies, including some children, were recovered in three burnt-out chalets in Granges-sur-Salvan, 47 miles east of Geneva, near the Italian border. The deaths have been linked to the apocalyptical Order of the Solar Temple sect, which was founded in 1984 by Dr Luc Jouret and Joseph di Mambro. The Order of the Solar Temple condones the mass stock-piling of weapons to prepare for the end of the world. Just hours before the grisly discoveries in Switzerland, the bodies of two more people, also believed to be linked to the sect, were found in Quebec, Canada, in a burnt-out apartment owned by Dr Jouret. It is not known yet whether either of the cult leaders are among the dead, but the Swiss authorities have said they are searching for two people in connection with the deaths. Gunshot wounds In Cheiry, emergency services were called to the farmhouse after locals reported a fire. Initially they only discovered the body of the farm's owner, 73-year-old Alberto Giacobino, who was lying dead on a bed with a plastic bag over his head. He had also been shot. The concealed chamber, covered in mirrors, was discovered during a search of the property for further bodies. Many of the bodies were found with gunshot wounds and plastic bags over their heads. Others were found clasping their hands in prayer. Most of the bodies were clad in ceremonial robes. According to rescuers, champagne bottles littered the floor and the victims were lying in a star formation. On a make-shift altar within the chamber there was a rose, a cross and a picture of Mr Jouret. The sect's motto is "Rose Eternal Cross." Plastic bags of petrol and gas cylinders wired up to explode by a telephone signal were found although the system had failed to work. It is thought a second fire was started manually elsewhere in the building. A similar timer device had also been rigged up in Granges-sur-Salvan. However, it is thought the dead may have been drugged or poisoned before the fires began. Local people in both idyllic villages had no idea that cult members had been living in their midst and have been left shocked by the events of the past 24 hours. Similarities are being made to events in Jonestown in Guyana in 1978 when 914 people led by the Reverend Jim Jones, committed suicide in a jungle clearing. And just last year in Waco, Texas 80 members of the Branch Davidian sect, led by David Koresh, died after fire broke out during a siege. -

Formed in 1974, Heaven’s Gate was a religious group from San Diego that believed planet Earth was going to be recycled & that their survival depended on leaving our planet as soon as possible. So on March 26th, 1997, authorities discovered 39 bodies from the group, who committed a mass suicide. Its group members believed that by killing themselves, they could reach a spacecraft following Comet Hale-Bopp to safety. The group formed in 1974, two years after Marshall Applewhite & Bonnie Nettles met to discuss their beliefs in extraterrestrials, particularly as they related to the teachings of Saint Francis of Assisi, who taught that the world was beautiful & good but needed to be destroyed in order to purify it of sin. Based on this belief, the pair was certain that the world would be destroyed & recycled in the near future. They recruited a number of followers over the years, hoping to someday contact extraterrestrials in order to escape Earth’s destruction. The group began giving up all earthly possessions & earthlike characteristics, soon detaching themselves from all of their belongings & friends. They were under the impression that their bodies were mere vessels in their journey to the “Next Level.” Thus, the 39 cult members killed themselves in order to reach the supposed extraterrestrial spacecraft that would lead them to safety.

The Branch Davidians are a religious cult formed in 1955 as an offshoot of the Davidian Seventh-Day Adventists. The group is perhaps best known for their involvement in the infamous Waco siege of 1993, in which 76 of its cult members were killed, including their leader David Koresh. The group was originally formed in 1955 when Benjamin Roden was expelled from the Seventh-Day Adventist for his supplemental teachings, as he claimed he was a prophet. He warned of the second coming of Christ, claiming he could raise the dead. When Roden died, his wife, Lois, took over & had an affair with David Koresh. Upon her death, she named Koresh to be her successor instead of her son, George. The group faced a power struggle & Koresh ultimately won the majority of the support. By 1993, the group continued to radicalize to the point where they were preparing to fight the supposed army of Babylon. It was because of this that the FBI suspected them of owning illegal weapons at their compound in Waco, Texas. After issuing a search & arrest warrant, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (or ATF) tried raiding the compound, at which point the Branch Davidians opened fire & killed two agents while losing four of their own. As a result, the FBI surrounded the compound & laid siege for 51 days. The siege ended in a shootout between the FBI, ATF, & Branch Davidian members. 76 members of the group were killed, including David Koresh himself.

The Order of the Solar Temple is a secret society loosely associated with the Knights Templar. While their exact origins are unclear, they are believed to have been inspired by Julien Ortigas, a French right-wing activist in 1968. They were officially formed in 1984 in Geneva, Switzerland by Luc Jouret & Joseph Di Mambro. The Order of the Solar Temple is most notorious for the killing rampage & mass suicides that took place from 1994 – 1995 in which several dozen people were killed. The cult’s belief system was centered on establishing what Robert Chabrier referred to as “establishing correct notions of authority and power in the world.” Joseph Di Mambro, however, convinced his followers that he was a reincarnated member of the 14th-century Knights Templar & that his daughter would one day rule a distant planet. In addition, Luc Jouret claimed to be Jesus Christ & often used his influence to have sex with female members of the cult. Believing the earth was about to be destroyed, many cult members decided to depart from the planet by killing themselves from 1994 to 1997, while others were killed as part of the ritual, including a three-month old infant. Over the three-year period, dozens of bodies were discovered & it soon became evident that many of the cult members were drugged before they were killed.

Twenty-three of the bodies were found in a concealed chamber beneath a remote farmhouse in the village of Cheiry, 48 miles north-east of Geneva.
A further 25 bodies, including some children, were recovered in three burnt-out chalets in Granges-sur-Salvan, 47 miles east of Geneva, near the Italian border.
The deaths have been linked to the apocalyptical Order of the Solar Temple sect, which was founded in 1984 by Dr Luc Jouret and Joseph di Mambro.
The Order of the Solar Temple condones the mass stock-piling of weapons to prepare for the end of the world.
Just hours before the grisly discoveries in Switzerland, the bodies of two more people, also believed to be linked to the sect, were found in Quebec, Canada, in a burnt-out apartment owned by Dr Jouret.
It is not known yet whether either of the cult leaders are among the dead, but the Swiss authorities have said they are searching for two people in connection with the deaths.
Gunshot wounds
In Cheiry, emergency services were called to the farmhouse after locals reported a fire.
Initially they only discovered the body of the farm's owner, 73-year-old Alberto Giacobino, who was lying dead on a bed with a plastic bag over his head. He had also been shot.
The concealed chamber, covered in mirrors, was discovered during a search of the property for further bodies.
Many of the bodies were found with gunshot wounds and plastic bags over their heads. Others were found clasping their hands in prayer. Most of the bodies were clad in ceremonial robes.
According to rescuers, champagne bottles littered the floor and the victims were lying in a star formation.
On a make-shift altar within the chamber there was a rose, a cross and a picture of Mr Jouret. The sect's motto is "Rose Eternal Cross."
Plastic bags of petrol and gas cylinders wired up to explode by a telephone signal were found although the system had failed to work. It is thought a second fire was started manually elsewhere in the building.
A similar timer device had also been rigged up in Granges-sur-Salvan. However, it is thought the dead may have been drugged or poisoned before the fires began.
Local people in both idyllic villages had no idea that cult members had been living in their midst and have been left shocked by the events of the past 24 hours.
Similarities are being made to events in Jonestown in Guyana in 1978 when 914 people led by the Reverend Jim Jones, committed suicide in a jungle clearing.
And just last year in Waco, Texas 80 members of the Branch Davidian sect, led by David Koresh, died after fire broke out during a siege.

The group is perhaps best known for their involvement in the infamous Waco siege of 1993, in which 76 of its cult members were killed, including their leader David Koresh. The group was originally formed in 1955 when Benjamin Roden was expelled from the Seventh-Day Adventist for his supplemental teachings, as he claimed he was a prophet. He warned of the second coming of Christ, claiming he could raise the dead. When Roden died, his wife, Lois, took over & had an affair with David Koresh. Upon her death, she named Koresh to be her successor instead of her son, George. The group faced a power struggle & Koresh ultimately won the majority of the support. By 1993, the group continued to radicalize to the point where they were preparing to fight the supposed army of Babylon. It was because of this that the FBI suspected them of owning illegal weapons at their compound in Waco, Texas. After issuing a search & arrest warrant, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (or ATF) tried raiding the compound, at which point the Branch Davidians opened fire & killed two agents while losing four of their own. As a result, the FBI surrounded the compound & laid siege for 51 days. The siege ended in a shootout between the FBI, ATF, & Branch Davidian members. 76 members of the group were killed, including David Koresh himself.

The Order of the Solar Temple is a secret society loosely associated with the Knights Templar. While their exact origins are unclear, they are believed to have been inspired by Julien Ortigas, a French right-wing activist in 1968. The Order of the Solar Temple is most notorious for the killing rampage & mass suicides that took place from 1994 – 1995 in which several dozen people were killed. Twenty-three of the bodies were found in a concealed chamber beneath a remote farmhouse in the village of Cheiry, 48 miles north-east of Geneva.
A further 25 bodies, including some children, were recovered in three burnt-out chalets in Granges-sur-Salvan, 47 miles east of Geneva, near the Italian border.
The deaths have been linked to the apocalyptical Order of the Solar Temple sect, which was founded in 1984 by Dr Luc Jouret and Joseph di Mambro.
The Order of the Solar Temple condones the mass stock-piling of weapons to prepare for the end of the world.
Just hours before the grisly discoveries in Switzerland, the bodies of two more people, also believed to be linked to the sect, were found in Quebec, Canada, in a burnt-out apartment owned by Dr Jouret.
It is not known yet whether either of the cult leaders are among the dead, but the Swiss authorities have said they are searching for two people in connection with the deaths.
Gunshot wounds
In Cheiry, emergency services were called to the farmhouse after locals reported a fire.
Initially they only discovered the body of the farm's owner, 73-year-old Alberto Giacobino, who was lying dead on a bed with a plastic bag over his head. He had also been shot.
The concealed chamber, covered in mirrors, was discovered during a search of the property for further bodies.
Many of the bodies were found with gunshot wounds and plastic bags over their heads. Others were found clasping their hands in prayer. Most of the bodies were clad in ceremonial robes.
According to rescuers, champagne bottles littered the floor and the victims were lying in a star formation.
On a make-shift altar within the chamber there was a rose, a cross and a picture of Mr Jouret. The sect's motto is "Rose Eternal Cross."
Plastic bags of petrol and gas cylinders wired up to explode by a telephone signal were found although the system had failed to work. It is thought a second fire was started manually elsewhere in the building.
A similar timer device had also been rigged up in Granges-sur-Salvan. However, it is thought the dead may have been drugged or poisoned before the fires began.
Local people in both idyllic villages had no idea that cult members had been living in their midst and have been left shocked by the events of the past 24 hours.
Similarities are being made to events in Jonestown in Guyana in 1978 when 914 people led by the Reverend Jim Jones, committed suicide in a jungle clearing.
And just last year in Waco, Texas 80 members of the Branch Davidian sect, led by David Koresh, died after fire broke out during a siege.

Die Sonnentempler - Eine Reise in den Tod

Am 5. Oktober 1994 wurden in mehreren Chalets in Cheiry und Salvan 48 Tote gefunden, in Kanada wurden weitere fünf Leichen gefunden. Die Opfer gehörten der Sekte der Sonnentempler an. Auch die Sektenführer Joseph di Mambro und Luc Jouret befanden sich unter den Toten.
Zwei Jahre nach dem Tod der 53 Mitglieder des Sonnentempels ist erstmals eine Bilanz der blutigen Ereignisse möglich. Heute ist erwiesen, dass in Cheiry und Salvan kein kollektiver Selbstmord stattgefunden hat, sondern ein Massenmord. Und zwar einer der gravierendsten in der kriminologischen Geschichte der Schweiz.

Der sogenannte "Transit zu Sirius" hatte weniger esoterische Gründe als vielmehr höchst weltliche. Die Gruppe litt an Geldmangel, verschiedene Mitglieder durchschauten Di Mambros Tricks, sowie Jourets Wahnsinn und glaubten nicht mehr daran, dass sie dazu auserwählt waren, mit außerirdischen Kräften in Kontakt zu stehen.
Aber die Geschichte der Sonnentempler ist nicht zu verstehen, wenn man die Gruppe als reine Sekte begreift. Di Mambro war auch der Chef einer Geheimgesellschaft, die sich auf die mittelalterlichen Templer berief. Der "Ordre du Temple Solaire", OTS, ist aus einem anderen Orden hervorgegangen (Ordre Rénové du Temple/ORT), dessen Großmeister der bekennende Rechtsextreme Julien Origas war. In dieser Tradition muss Di Mambros wahnwitzige Ambition gesehen werden, den Orden zu einer weltumspannenden Macht auszubauen.
Der Dokumentarfilm zeigt eine Reihe bisher unbekannter, verblüffender Videodokumente aus dem Inneren der Sekte. Er lässt viele Zeugen zu Worte kommen und zeigt die höchst unglückliche Rolle auf, welche die Schweizer Richter und Polizisten in diesem Krimi um Esoterik, Geld und Macht spielen.
