Law students’ stir – Madurai 05-02-2015 Interview Law college students stage demonstration Students of Madurai Law College staged a demonstration in front of the district courts complex here on Thursday in support of their counterparts in Chennai, who were assaulted by police. A proposal to shift the law college led to an agitation during which police resorted to lathi charge in Chennai on Wednesday. The students condemned the police and urged the government to drop the proposal to shift the college from the High Court campus. As the students resorted to a road blockade for over an hour, the police diverted the traffic. Protest shifts to college campus Law students stand their ground Following protests by students of Dr. Ambedkar Government Law College on Wednesday, against the shifting of their institution, authorities declared the college and hostels closed for a week. Meanwhile, the students moved their protests from the road to the law college campus on Wednesday night. Attempts by the Director of Legal Studies and Bar Council representatives, on Thursday, to persuade the students to withdraw the strike went in vain. The students began protesting a few days ago, based on media reports the college would be shifted from the Madras High Court premises to the outskirts of the city. On Wednesday, around 40 students were arrested for disrupting traffic along Poonamallee High Road when they staged a protest at Central railway station. They also clashed with the police. The city police registered six cases against the protesters on charges including rioting, damaging public property, endangering lives and preventing public servant from discharging his duties. On Thursday morning, N.S. Santosh, director, department of legal studies, issued a notice stating the law college and hostels would be closed for a week following the agitation. In the evening, he spoke to the protesters at the college for over an hour and tried to pacify them. “I told them to fight for their cause legally and not indulge in protests,” he said. Meanwhile, the students filed a petition against police atrocity in the Madras High Court. “We want the government to ensure the police do not file any case against the students who protested on Wednesday. Action should be taken against the officers who attacked the students and compensation should be given to the injured,” said a protester. Pattali Makkal Katchi founder S. Ramadoss said the State government must clarify its stand on the issue. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee condemned the police action on the students.
