The Brothers Bloom (2008)

Brothers - older Stephen and three years junior Bloom - have been con artists since they were kids. Stephen is the mastermind, for who the intricacy of the story used in the con is as important as the positive outcome of the swindle. Bloom is the main character of Stephen's stories, the character he considers the anti-hero. As adults, they travel the world and never enlist the same people twice in their cons, except for their consistent sidekick, the mysterious and primarily silent Bang Bang, a Japanese woman who just appeared in their lives one day and who has a penchant for blowing things up. As Bloom hits his mid-thirties, he wants to quit the business as he is losing his own identity to that of the characters he portrays; he doesn't know anymore what is real and what is make-believe. Stephen talks him into one last con, the mark to be the eccentric, lonely but beautiful New Jersey heiress, Penelope Stamp. Penelope's primary past-time in life is to, as she calls it, "borrow hobbies": when she sees something she likes, she learns how to do it solely through reading books. As the brothers go through their final con on Penelope, three main problems may occur to thwart the plan. First, the brothers' former mentor and now arch enemy, Diamond Dog, may exact his long awaited revenge on the brothers. Second, Penelope may end up being more unpredictable than all their former marks. And third, Bloom, who has let love slip by in his life, may fall for Penelope. But through the process, no one ever really knows who is conning who.

"They were down on the floor before I started recording. I remember the police had control of the situation," Santana said. "He had control of Scott. And Scott was trying just to get away from the Taser." "As you can see in the video, the police officer just shot him in the back," Santana said. "I knew right away, I had something on my hands." SC Cop Faces Murder Charge After Video Shows Him Fatally Shoot Unarmed Black Man in Back As He Runs Away North Charleston officer to face murder charge after video shows him shooting man in back (The Post And Courier) A video that shows a North Charleston police officer shooting at 50-year-old Walter Scott’s back at least eight times as he ran away resulted in the lawman’s arrest Tuesday, officials said. The development came as the State Law Enforcement Division looked into whether Patrolman 1st Class Michael Slager, 33, acted lawfully when he shot Scott to death. Police Chief Eddie Driggers said Tuesday that Slager had been arrested. Mayor Keith Summey added during a news conference that as a result of the video and Slager’s “bad decision,” the officer would be charged with murder. Summey said Slager’s actions were not representative of the entire police force. “When you’re wrong, you’re wrong,” Summey said. “When you make a bad decision, don’t care if you’re behind the shield or a citizen on the street, you have to live with that decision.” The footage, filmed by an anonymous bystander, shows the end of the confrontation between the two on Saturday after Scott, who had a warrant out for his arrest, ran from a traffic stop. It was the first piece of evidence that could contradict a statement that Slager released to the public through his attorney. SLED spokesman Thom Berry said Tuesday that he could not confirm whether the agency has the video. “All I can say is that our investigation is continuing,” Berry said, “and it would be inappropriate for us to discuss any specifics at this time.” Attorney David Aylor, who released a statement on Slager’s behalf earlier this week, said Tuesday that he wasn’t representing the officer anymore. “I’m no longer involved in form or fashion,” Aylor said. Slager has said through Aylor that Scott had wrested his Taser from him during a struggle. The officer felt threatened when he fired, his attorney said. Deputy Coroner Brittney Martin was not immediately available Tuesday to confirm how many times Scott was hit. At the time, Scott was wanted for arrest on a Family Court warrant, Charleston County sheriff’s Maj. Eric Watson said Tuesday. He had a history of arrests related to contempt of court charges for failing to pay child support. The only accusation of violence against Scott during his lifetime came through a 1987 assault and battery charge, but the disposition of that charge was not immediately known. Public sentiment The footage comes amid a discussion about race and policing in the U.S. Scott was black. Slager is white. The nationwide conversation was sparked by the fatal shooting in August of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo. Brown, an 18-year-old black man, was unarmed at the time, but witnesses said he got into a struggle with Officer Darren Wilson, who is white, and was shot during the scuffle. Though a grand jury did not find any reason to indict Wilson, the shooting ignited protests, some of which turned violent. A “black lives matter” movement inspired talk about whether police nationwide too quickly resort to deadly force against black men. During that wave of public sentiment that prompted rallies in the Charleston area, South Carolina Trooper Sean Groubert, who is white, was arrested for shooting Levar Jones, a black man who had reached into his pickup for his driver’s license during a September traffic stop in Columbia. Groubert faces a charge of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, and the state settled a lawsuit by Jones for $300,000. North Charleston officer charged with murder in fatal shooting

North Charleston Police Officer Michael Slager will be arrested and charged with murder for shooting Walter Scott after a traffic stop near Craig Street and Remount Road. At a press conference Tuesday afternoon North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey announced that a young person came forward with video of the incident. Mayor Summey says the video is demonstrative of exactly what happened. The mayor said it was a bad decision made by one officer. Officials with SLED provided the police with the video footage of the shooting and as a result North Charleston Police Officer Michael Slager will be charged with murder in connection with the shooting. The North Charleston Police Chief said the video shows Scott being shot as he fled from the officer on foot. A police spokesman originally told media that Scott had taken the Taser from Slager and attempted to wield it against the officer, at which point Slager drew his weapon and shot Scott. A video posted online by The New York Times, taken by a bystander on a cell phone, depicts a different scene. It shows Scott and Slager interacting in close proximity to one another in an open, grassy area. Scott then turns and begins to run away from the officer. As Scott flees, Slager pulls his gun from its holster and fires eight shots at Scott, who crumples to the ground near a tree. Slager walks toward him, speaking into his radio, tells an unresponsive Scott to put his hands behind his back, and then places him in handcuffs. No attempt to render first aid is depicted in the Times video until other officers arrive on the scene. Scott subsequently died of his injuries. Slager reportedly told investigators that Scott had taken his Taser, giving the officer reason to fear for his life. Footage shows Slager saying, “Shots fired and the subject is down. He took my Taser.” Scott does not appear to be carrying a weapon of any kind in the video while fleeing from Slager. The video also shows Slager stooping to pick up an object near the scene of the original scuffle, and later tossing an object from his belt near Scott’s body. Scott joins the list of unarmed black Americans whose deaths at the hands of police were recently documented on camera. In New York, bystanders filmed the death of Eric Garner, who repeatedly shouted, “I can’t breathe,” as multiple NYPD officers placed him in a chokehold during an arrest for allegedly selling loose cigarettes. Grainy footage from a nearby surveillance camera captured the death of Tamir Rice, a 12-year-old who was shot by Cleveland police in November while playing with a toy gun in a local park. A Staten Island jury declined to bring charges against NYPD Officer Daniel Pantaleo for Garner’s death in December. Rice’s death remains under investigation. South Carolina has also seen its own share of policing controversies in recent years. Last September, State Trooper Sean Groubert was fired and charged with aggravated assault and battery for shooting and wounding a black man who reached for his ID in a parked car. In 2011, local NAACP leaders accused North Charleston police of racial profiling during traffic stops, alleging that young black men were stopped four times as often as young white men. Calls to the local NAACP chapters on Tuesday night were not immediately returned. The shooting comes on the heels of high-profile incidents of police officers using lethal force in New York, Cleveland, Ferguson, Mo., and elsewhere around the country. The deaths have sparked a national debate over whether the police are too quick to use force, particularly in cases involving black men. A White House task force has recommended a host of changes to the nation’s police policies, and President Obama dispatched Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr., to cities around the country to try to improve police relations with minority neighborhoods. North Charleston is the state’s third-largest city with a population of about 100,000. African-Americans make up about 47 percent of residents, and whites account for about 37 percent. The city police department is about 80 percent white, according to data collected by the Justice Department in 2007, the most recent period available. “When you’re wrong, you’re wrong,” Mayor Keith Summey said of the shooting during the news conference. “And if you make a bad decision, don’t care if you’re behind the shield or just a citizen on the street, you have to live by that decision.” The shooting unfolded after Officer Slager stopped the driver of a Mercedes-Benz with a broken taillight, according to police reports. Mr. Scott ran away, and Officer Slager chased him into a grassy lot that abuts a muffler shop. He fired his Taser, an electronic stun gun, but it did not stop Mr. Scott, according to police reports. Moments after the struggle, Officer Slager reported on his radio, “Shots fired and the subject is down. He took my Taser,” according to police reports. But the video, which was taken by a bystander and provided to The New York Times by the Scott family’s lawyer, presents a different account. The video begins in the vacant lot, apparently moments after Officer Slager fired his Taser. Wires, which carry the electrical current from the stun gun, appear to be extending from Mr. Scott’s body as the two men tussle and Mr. Scott turns to run. Something — it is not clear whether it is the stun gun — is either tossed or knocked to the ground behind the two men and Officer Slager draws his gun, the video shows. When the officer fires, Mr. Scott appears to be 15 to 20 feet away and fleeing. He falls after the last of eight shots. In the cleaning industry however it is not always 'the cheaper the better'.Cleaning services in a particular area all set their prices at a competitive rate, so if you happen to stumble across some incredible deal, well, don't believe it. This may mean that the company's overhead costs may be way low and that should definitely raise a red flag. It could also mean low paid employees who may be looking to supplement their income (scary I know) or that all the necessary legalities are missing. 2. Reputation (.and the probing starts) Reputation is one of the more important factors, having a very long history in the cleaning business does not necessarily guarantee a good reputation. Doing your own little investigation would be time well spent, find out if any friends or neighbors have input on your particular cleaning service. Search online for customer reviews (bad ones) remember, business owners have friends and neighbors too, so you should never put too much faith in those excellent customer reviews you most likely will come across. Stick to well known online directories like Angie's List or Service Magic, but always pay attention to that little gut feeling you may get during that first phone call. 1. Trust (OK, now you may go through my personal belongings) I think of trust like a building under construction, except all the building materials in this case are time. It comes together slowly but in the end if it was done right and is maintained properly it will be strong and last forever, and could be something beautiful. Any cleaning service you choose should steadily gain your trust up until the point where you feel comfortable enough to leave the cleaners alone in your home, if you so decide. As I mentioned before, you're buying time, so it won't do you much good to spend that time you just bought hovering over people cleaning your house. Make it a point to ask the company you decide to go with whether or not they would be able to send the same person to your house. Find out if that cleaning service has liability insurance and then ask for proof of that insurance. It's also a good idea to find out if the company is bonded. Those are very important steps to take in making sure you and your property are protected from mishaps or theft when work is being done in your home. When it's all said and done choosing the right cleaning service is no exact science, even following these guidelines doesn't guarantee you finding that perfect company. I do believe however that these tips will greatly reduce your chances of being disappointed or taken advantage of. Trust me; I'm the owner of a cleaning service myself. Jason and Richard discuss how there is no free market if the Federal Reserve and other central banks manipulate the cost of money by manipulating interest rates. Allowing the free market to set/regulate/coordinate interest rates is a key for signaling market participants when to save, when to invest and when to consume and this is no longer happening the way it should. Jason and Richard discuss Keynesian central banker induced credit bubbles and how many more credit bubbles are likely to come. As Kevin, supplied the.... uh horsepower, our knowledgable guide entertained and informed us with many interesting tidbits regarding Charleston's rich history, a city whose beginning dates back more than a hundred years before the founding of America. Add in the picture perfect weather we enjoyed, and you've got the recipe for an experience that's hard to beat. If exercise is more your style, one of the many walking tours may better suit your needs. Charleston's downtown business and residential districts are compact and perfect for a relaxed and entertaining walk as you appreciate the history and beauty all around you. At some point in your visit, you'll probably find yourself meandering through City Market, as will most of Charleston's 4 million annual visitors. This Charleston landmark has been around since the 1790's. Today from among the hundreds of local vendors, you can find just the right item to purchase and keep as a souvenir or to give as that special gift. The city of Charleston proper boasts 90 properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places, with another 96 in the remaining parts of the county. As you witness the variety of these restored treasures, you'll appreciate why Charleston was considered the cultural center of the antebellum South. Since we're talking historical homes, make sure you stroll along East Battery street toward White Point Garden. You'll enjoy the beauty of the magnificent row of stately antebellum homes that line the street to your right as Charleston harbor splashes against the battery seawall on which you walk. Charleston's visitors also enjoy the city by water. There are numerous Harbor tours where one can get a better sense of Charleston's skyline, and with an evening cruise, enjoy a beautiful sunset as well. This film introduces you to some of the local characters that are growing, cooking, and buying our state's bounty of fresh vegetables and meat. The film's narrator, Erin Eisele, leads you on an intimate journey as she gets to know and understand what makes these folks passionate about what they do to strengthen and support farming in our state. Solar Energy! On beautiful Seabrook Island, nestled on the coast just south of Charleston, South Carolina, lies Camp St. Christopher It offers over 300 acres of beach, marsh and maritime forest and multiple facilities including meeting and conference centers, lodging, and worship centers. We're excited about keeping you up-to-date on our progress and informing you about how this project was made possible. The process began last August when the State Energy Office put out information that there were going to be $2.9 million available in grants for alternative energy projects for non-profits. As soon as we found out, we immediately started getting in touch with local Charleston non-profit organizations to inform them about the opportunity. When St. Christopher responded about being interested, we setup a meeting for late September 2009 and went out to view the grounds and start planning. The RFP from the State was issued in early September. The government was looking at multiple factors before approving a non-profit like St. Christopher for the grant. These included visibility of project, potential job creation, overall benefit in terms of investment and payback of the project (they needed a minimum return of $2.50 dollars to $1 spent). The grant writing process was long and hard, but St. Christopher didn't have to worry about that. SES took care of making sure the grant was completed correctly and on time. Anything we were able to do to make the process easier for them, we did! After submitting the grant, we found out in March that St. Christopher was awarded the money! After that, it was really time for us to get moving. It took till June to actually get the contracts squared away with the state. We then went through the permitting process. We put together architectural drawings done by the camp director, roof mounting drawings, basically everything that needed to be done to the camp to get it ready for installation. The buildings needed some retrofits to make the project possible. For example, the roofing mounts had to be able to withstand 130mph winds with 150 mph gusts.....just one of many details to iron out. We were permitted by the 2nd week of July and started work the next week. Needless to say, the past year has been full of paperwork and phone calls, red tape and patience. One of our main goals when working with a non-profit to obtain funding or a grant is to shoulder as much of the work as possible. So far, it's been a very successful project with St. Christopher. Stay tuned in weeks to come for pictures and videos on the construction, retrofits, and installation. We want you to follow along with this project with us. A 4.1 magnitude earthquake struck Friday night in west-central South Carolina, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. The quake was the strongest to hit South Carolina since 2002, local emergency management officials said. The quake was centered 7 miles (12 kilometers) west-northwest of Edgefield, which is about 25 miles north of Augusta, Georgia, and 60 miles southwest of Columbia, South Carolina. The town of Edgefield has some 4,750 residents, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The USGS estimates the quakes depth was about 3 miles (4.6 kilometers). The same federal agency initially estimated a 4.4 magnitude quake. An emergency dispatcher in Edgefield said there were no reports of damage or injuries tied to the tremor. Columbia County, Georgia, and the South Carolina Emergency Management Division also reported no damage or injuries. Still, the quake was big enough to be felt as far away as metropolitan Atlanta some 160 miles west. A group of 10 Central Michigan University students volunteered at the Caroline Youth Development Center through CMU's Alternative Break program. The CYDC assists children who experience or are at risk of abuse, neglect or emotional disturbances. During the trip, the students organized and cleaned storage areas at the service site, helped children with homework and provided after-school activities. CMU is ranked fourth in the nation for the number of students participating in Alternative Breaks and fifth in the country for the most trips coordinated by a university. The program organizes about 40 trips each year with more than 400 students volunteering.

The victims were attending Bible study at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church when the attack occurred, shortly after 9 p.m. Wednesday. The known victims include the church’s pastor, the Rev. Clementa Pinckney, a state senator, and his sister. Police described the shooting as a "hate crime." Known as "Mother Emanuel," the Emanuel AME Church is home to the oldest black congregation south of Baltimore. It was burned in the 1820s during a slave rebellion and has stood at its present location since 1872. The church has its roots in the early 19th century and was founded in part by a freed slave named Denmark Vesey, who was later executed for organizing a slave revolt.
