Reel 1. Retrospective documentary about Liverpool. Shot of the City of Liverpool crest. Intertitle reads: "The later pages in Liverpool's long History have been turned back to recapture memories of happenings which have occurred in and about the City during this, the 20th Century." Aerial shot of Liverpool and its docks. Various shots of City buildings from the air. 1907 shots of a giant pageant in Wavertree Park. 1207 - King John granted a charter for the City of Liverpool - this is re-enacted in the pageant. Surrender of the castle to King Rupert seen acted by the pageant participants. Maritime history. "Today Liverpool is the greatest outlet for the nation's exports." Various shots of cargoes being loaded and unloaded at the docks. History of the making of the Liverpool docks is recounted on the soundtrack. 1926 Mersey Dock and Harbour Board tender Galatea broke a symbolic ribbon to commemorate the completion of the Gladstone Dock System. King George V and Queen Mary are aboard. We see the ship entering the docks. High angle of the King and Queen stepping off the boat. Various shots of ships and tugs travelling through the docks. Low angle shot of Mauretania coming into dock. Various shots of men working to secure the ship. Other shots of the liner undergoing repairs. Sir Auckland Geddes waits to board a boat. We see him and his wife walk up a gangplank. Lady Asquith sees her daughter and son-in-law (Prince and Princess Bibesco) aboard a boat from the Prince's Landing Stage. Lord Baden-Powell signs autographs for boy scouts before boarding a boat. Jack Hulbert and Cicely Courtneidge smile for the camera before boarding a boat. High angle shot of some chorus girls dancing on deck. The band plays on deck whilst the cast shows one of the dances that they are taking to New York. M/S of the girls all gathered together whilst a cameraman films them. Shots of crowds of people in the Liverpool streets waiting for news of the Titanic. Most of the crew were Liverpool men - their families waited for news of their men. Man stands with his arm in a sling looking at the camera. Group of people walk towards the camera, woman at the front cries. Other shots of people walking around and crying. M/S of the memorial to those lost with the Titanic which stands at the pier head. Section about training men for a life at sea. Low angle shot of either the Indefatigable or the Conway - training ships. Young boys do a flag drill. M/S of boys with bare feet scrubbing the decks. Shots of the docks from the Liverpool overhead railway. (This first piece of footage could be Lumiere's 1896 film.) Shots from the front of a train as it travels on the railway. Various shots of trains travelling on this railway which runs from Dingle to Seaforth. Landmarks of Liverpool are seen: Cotton Exchange, Town Hall, Royal Liver Building. Low angle shot of the clock on Liver building. The last train left in 1956. High angle shots of Liverpool streets.
