Liverpool (/ˈlɪvəpuːl/) is a city and metropolitan borough of Merseyside, England, along the eastern side of the Mersey Estuary. It was founded as a borough in 1207 and was granted city status in 1880. According to the Office for National Statistics, the 2010 mid-year population estimate for Liverpool was 445,200 and was part of a larger urban area of 816,216.
Historically a part of Lancashire, the urbanisation and expansion of Liverpool were both largely brought about by the city's status as a major port. By the 18th century, trade from the West Indies, Ireland and mainland Europe coupled with close links with the Atlantic Slave Trade furthered the economic expansion of Liverpool. By the early 19th century, 40% of the world's trade passed through Liverpool's docks, contributing to Liverpool's rise as a major city.
Inhabitants of Liverpool are referred to as Liverpudlians but are also colloquially known as "Scousers", in reference to the local dish known as "scouse", a form of stew. The word "Scouse" has also become synonymous with the Liverpool accent and dialect. Liverpool's status as a port city has contributed to its diverse population, which, historically, were drawn from a wide range of peoples, cultures, and religions, particularly those from Ireland. The city is also home to the oldest Black African community in the country and the oldest Chinese community in Europe.
The Museum of Liverpool in Liverpool, England, opened on 19 July 2011 (with the second phase of galleries opening to the public on 2nd December 2011) and is part of the National Museums Liverpool group.
National Museums Liverpool intention is for the new venue to tell the story of Liverpool and its people, and reflect the city’s global significance. The museum is housed in a new purpose-built building on the Mann Island site at the Pier Head. The museum replaces the Museum of Liverpool Life, which closed in June 2006.
The museum, designed by architects 3XN and engineers Buro Happold, was expected to cost £72 million and provide 8,000 square metres of exhibition space, housing more than 6,000 objects. There are also plans to have flexible spaces that regularly change to enable National Museums Liverpool to show more of their collections.
Exhibits from the entirety of National Museums Liverpool's collections are used for the Museum of Liverpool's displays. They tell the story of the city through items from collections of costume and decorative art, entomological and botanical collections and objects representing social and urban history, as well as oral testimonies, archaeological material and photographic archives.
The Museum of Liverpool, which opened in 2011 in a brand new building on Liverpool's waterfront, is now the most visited museum in the country (outside of London!) Here is a taster of what makes it so popular.

To accompany the gigs, visitors will be able to see a number of objects that have played a part in the band’s career, including ‘Winston’ the four-track tape recorder which played a key role in the development of OMD, 35 years ago.
The two exclusive intimate gigs in the Museum of Liverpool’s Atrium will be the first concerts by a major music act to take place in the stunning waterfront venue.
The set will include greatest hits, tracks from the band’s 1983 Dazzle Ships album and one song which has never been performed live. Fans will also have the opportunity to access Liverpool’s very own Dazzle Ship to hear the missing parts I, IV, V and VI of OMD’s Dazzle Ships musique concrète composition from 1983.
Paul Gallagher, Acting Senior Curator of Urban History said: “OMD have a special place in Liverpool’s cultural history, and we wanted to put objects on display that would reflect the band’s journey and development. The objects we’ve chosen helped OMD create their unique sound, and also reveal some of the early influences and catalysts behind the band’s success.”
Displayed in the Atrium where the concerts will also take place, original posters will be displayed alongside the equipment used by the band in their early days.
From their formation in 1978, OMD embraced new technologies and rejected the traditional guitar-based approach to pop music. Their Roland CR-78 drum machine from 1979 is an example of one of the earliest programmable drum machines. It provided the distinctive rhythm-pattern heard throughout the 1980 single Enola Gay, written by Andy McCluskey.
The first synthesizer owned by OMD will also be displayed. The band purchased the Korg M500 Micro Preset Synthesizer in 1979 through Andy’s mother’s mail-order catalogue for £7.76 a week, paid over 36 weeks. It featured on OMD’s first three albums and was the main instrument on early singles Electricity, Red Frame, White Light and Messages.
The original poster for the release of Electricity on Factory Records in 1979 will be displayed, created by Andy McCluskey in his art student days. The poster was never used however, as OMD preferred the designs of graphic artist Peter Saville, who was notable for his work with Factory Records.
Saville went on to become the band’s visual arts consultant for many of their stage sets, singles and album releases in the 1980s. He also introduced Andy to Edward Wadsworth’s 1919 painting Dazzle Ships in dry dock at Liverpool, inspiring OMD’s iconic and influential fourth album Dazzle Ships. The album has retrospectively been hailed by critics as a ‘masterpiece’ and ‘lost classic’, and is the basis for the upcoming gigs.
As there is currently a Dazzle Ship in a dry dock in front of the Museum of Liverpool for Liverpool Biennial / 14-18 NOW commemorations, it is appropriate that the band recognise the Dazzle Ship with the shows, with all proceeds going back into supporting National Museums Liverpool.
Andy McCluskey said: “The Museum is a fantastic space and very intimate, so it will be a great show. The museums and galleries in this city have had a major influence on me and as a current Trustee of National Museums Liverpool, it’s nice to come back and do these unique concerts at the Museum of Liverpool.”
On both nights – which are sold out – OMD will consist of Andy McCluskey, Paul Humphreys and Martin Cooper. As an added bonus, ‘Winston’ will grace the stage again for the first time in three decades.

The DVD is out in 29 days and has been manufactured in a limited edition of 2,000. They are selling fast so pre-order now to guarantee your copy.
Additionally, we have now made a HD digital download of the live film available for pre-order. This is at the special request of some of our American fans who would have been unable to play the DVD themselves. We also hope that those who were asking for a BluRay edition are happy with this compromise - we did seriously look into the possibility but unfortunately it became clear that making a BluRay would have been financially unviable.
We hope that you are enjoying what you have seen so far of the DVD. There is more to come as we get closer to the release date.

Rising from the coastal plains of West Lancashire, Liverpool’s fortunes have been tied to the ocean for over 800 years. Once England’s gateway to the world, the enormous wealth that trade brought into the city was ploughed back into the city’s skyline.
In the heart of Liverpool, by the banks of the city’s beloved river, is Pier Head. Wander across this floating pier, where the excitement and teary farewells of Transatlantic steamship passengers once filled the air. Behind Pier Head, rises Liverpool’s crown, The Three Graces.
These three buildings stand as a testament to both Liverpool’s former trading might, and the city’s eternal love of beauty.
Upriver from Pier Head, is the Albert Docks. Once packed with goods such as brandy, tea, ivory and tobacco, today the docks are the storehouses of many of the city’s historic treasures.
Explore Liverpool’s oceangoing past, from the ages of sail, to Titanic stories of loss and sacrifice at the Merseyside Maritime Museum. Next door, the acclaimed International Slavery Museum is a sobering reminder that the bricks of Liverpool were mortared with the blood and sweat of Africa.
The UK’s premier art intuition, the Tate, exhibits works from the national collection here at its northern home by the Mersey.
Climb aboard the Yellow Submarine and immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of the Fab Four across the dock at The Beatles Story. Continue your Magical Mystery Tour down the stairs at 10 Matthew Street. In the early 1960s, The Beatles performed at Cavern Club almost 300 times.
Liverpool is England’s most successful footballing city. At Anfield Road Stadium, stand before the statue of the Liverpool manager who uttered the immortal words, “Football is not a matter of life or death,…it’s far, far more important than that.”
Welcome to Liverpool, where each day is a voyage into a spectacular past, and a bright bold future as well.

Liverpool Travel Video - Liverpool is 2008's European Capital of Culture, and the city has spent the last few years getting ready for the ball. Handsome old buildings have had facials and brand-new ones shine spotlessly on the skyline. The once boarded-up warehouses of the city centre have been transformed into new shops, cafés and fancy apartments.
Impressive stuff, no doubt, but it's the culture on offer that really has us buzzing.Liverpool Travel Video shows the city's store of superb museums and top-class art galleries -- all free -- have put paid to the scurrilous rumour that Liverpool peaked with the Beatles: in 2004 the whole of the waterfront and docks was declared a Unesco World Heritage Site because there are more listed buildings here than in any other city in England except London. And then, of course, the nightlife: as rich and varied as you'd expect from a good northern city.

With Liverpool's own Gay Quarter, you are sure to party hard, although it's not on the same wave length as Manchester, it sure has the right vibes. For the indie chicks, Duke Street is the place for you, with Le Bataeu providing cheap drinks and often free entry, with unsigned bands providing the music, you are bound to have a good night.

The Museum of Liverpool is to display several unique objects ahead of Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark’s two sell-out gigs on 1 and 2 November 2014.

We're pleased to reveal the next track from the live DVD, Maid of Orleans. As with the other clips, the full version is available on PledgeMusic to those who have pre-ordered the DVD here: http://found.ee/OMD_Pledge

Many people visit Liverpool just to remember to John, Paul, George and Ringo, but Liverpool is a surprisingly enjoyable city. It's an interesting stop both for Beatles fans and for those who like to look urban Britain straight in the eye.
Amazing Liverpool Travel Video...
