The Mersey Ferry is a ferry service operating on the River Mersey in north west England, between Liverpool and Birkenhead/Wallasey on the Wirral Peninsula. Ferries have been used on this route since at least the 12th century, and continue to be popular for both local people and visitors.
The current fleet consists of two active vessels, with a third currently laid up for cost-saving reasons. They originally came into service in the 1960s and were named Mountwood, Woodchurch and Overchurch. All three ferries have been extensively refurbished and renamed Royal Iris of the Mersey, Snowdrop and Royal Daffodil respectively, the latter of which is not currently in service.
The ferries share the workload of cross-river ferrying, charter cruises and the Manchester Ship Canal cruise. The service is managed by Merseytravel.
In 1150, the Benedictine Priory at Birkenhead was established. The monks used to charge a small fare to row passengers across the river. At this time, the Mersey was considerably wider with sand dunes and marshes to the north leading up to Ainsdale beach and sandstone cliffs and shorelines to the south near Otterspool. The only suitable landing point for the ferry was in the Pool, near the site of the present Merseyside Police headquarters. Weather often stopped crossings and passengers were delayed for days, taking shelter at the priory.

During heavy weather and the tide turning
On 28th December 2011 with gale force winds forcast, high tide peaking at 13:21, at 9.4 meters, I took a ride on the "Royal Iris of the Mersey"(Mountwood). This vessel is my favourite over Royal Daffodil(Overchurch) and Snowdrop(Woodchurch). As the previous vessel of the ferry named the "MV Royal Iris", this ferry(Royal Iris of the Mersey) can't be called "Royal Iris" because the previous vessel is still listed on Lloyd's Register of Shipping in the same class. Today this ferry still retains many features from her days as Mountwood including the original pair of Kockums Supertyfon fog horns, as do her two sister ships.

When you are in the city of Liverpool, one of the sights you must go to see are the Ferry boats on the River Mersey. The song Ferry cross the Mersey certainly helped to make them famous. Sadly it is no longer possible to take a journey across but they do still run as you can see in this video. They a wonderful sight, especially in the early evening as the sun is setting over the River Mersey.

Wednesday 22nd June 2016. After a break of 3 and a half months I finally return to the trains. I have been extremely busy with work and social life commitments as well as driving lessons hence why I have not had any time to do anything. For my comeback outing I once again head over to Merseyside for a day out. Journey starts at Chester-le-Street where I catch the 0614 to Liverpool Lime Street and arrive there about 0908. Once Im there I buy a Merseytravel Saveaway day ticket and at about 0930 go outside Merseyside to Chester, Cheshire. A place id not been since October 2010 in Series 4. At Chester I spend an hour there and for me its a taster of whats to come in September. But anyway we see Arriva Trains Wales class 150's, 158's and 175's, The Virgin Trains service to and from Holyhead ...
In this video I visit the 2008 UK capital of culture that is Liverpool. I have various rides on the Merseyrail system, a ride on the Mersey Ferry to Seacombe and end up getting an Arriva bus to Birkenhead Park, I film Lime Street station and do sightseeing in the city centre.
