Nicholas Ying Shan Liu was born in Hong Kong and attended school there until he left for Lancaster University to study Accounting. He arrived in Liverpool in 1973 where he found work as a part-time waiter/manager until 1985. He was a founder member of the England Ching Wu Association set up in 1973 where he practised and taught martial arts and lion dance until 1985. During these years he also participated in the Liverpool Chinese New Year Celebrations performing the lion dance. Nicholas has a strong interest in Chinese martial arts and in 1988 set up the Liverpool Chinatown Tai Chi Society which is still running to this day. Professionally Nicholas has worked as an accountant and achieved his MBA in Accounting from Oklahoma City University. He is the director and founder of The Kingham Group Chartered Accountants, which operates in four locations: Liverpool, St. Helens, Leyland and Birkenhead. In the Liverpool office Nicholas offers specialist bi-lingual accountancy services to members of Chinese community: accountancy, tax, business start-up, immigration advice and China trading. He is an active member of Liverpool Society of Chartered Accountants and was also Chairman (1993 – 1997) and founder member of Liverpool China Committee under the umbrella of Liverpool Chambers of Commerce. The aims of the committee were to twin the Cities of Shanghai and Liverpool for civic exchanges and trade; Launch ChinaLink as the Chinatrade Advisory based in Liverpool which assists SME's in the UK establish trade links with China (1998 – 2010); and also the construction of the ceremonial Chinese Arch which was completed in 2000 in Liverpool's Chinatown. This was a joint effort between the Liverpool City Council, Liverpool Chinese Community and Liverpool Chambers of Commerce for the UK, and the City of Shanghai. In 2005 Nicholas opened the first authentic Sichuan restaurant in Liverpool and aside from his interests in martial arts he has set up many different clubs in Liverpool that reflect his interests in the community, including a Golf Club, Badminton Club, and Cantonese Opera Society. Nick is married with a son and a daughter. The Heritage Lottery Fund has awarded a grant to Ming-Ai (London) Institute for a 3-year ground breaking project on the British Chinese Workforce Heritage in London, taking place between June 2012 and May 2015.
