Jonathan Lazar, Towson University, Towson, United States Having a Social Impact by Getting Outside of Your Comfort Zone As researchers, practitioners, and educators in human-computer interaction, it is important to strive for societal impact. Although it can be very enjoyable to work only within our own disciplinary communities, where we have a shared understanding and a shared history, focusing only within our own community limits the societal impact. Therefore, it is important to collaborate not only with people in other research and practitioner disciplines, but also educators, policymakers and other government officials, advocacy groups, and the broader research and development community. As we in the HCI community increase the use of Mechanical Turk, sensors, tweets, and other big da...
Emerging virtual reality (VR) displays must overcome the prevalent issue of visual discomfort to provide high-quality and immersive user experiences. In particular, the mismatch between vergence and accommodation cues inherent to most stereoscopic displays has been a long standing challenge. In this paper, we evaluate several adaptive display modes afforded by focus-tunable optics or actuated displays that have the promise to mitigate visual discomfort caused by the vergence-accommodation conflict, and improve performance in VR environments. We also explore monovision as an un- conventional mode that allows each eye of an observer to accommodate to a different distance. While this technique is common practice in ophthalmology, we are the first to report its effectiveness for VR application...
CHI 2013 SIGCHI Lifetime Achievement in Practice Award - Jakob Nielsen Jakob Nielsen, principal of the Nielsen Norman Group is the CHI2013 winner of the ACM SIGCHI Lifetime Achievement in Practice Award. The SIGCHI Lifetime Practice Award is presented to individuals for outstanding contributions to the practice and understanding of human-computer interaction. This award recognizes the very best and most influential applications of human-computer interaction. It is awarded for a lifetime of innovation and leadership and carries an honorarium of $5000. Jakob Nielsen is Principal of Nielsen Norman Group (www.nngroup.com), a user experience firm he co-founded with Donald A. Norman in 1998. Nielsen is the founder of the “discount usability engineering” movement, which emphasizes fast and eff...
Abstract Every company wants and needs to innovate to produce competitive products. This is particularly critical now in the US. Many of these prototype product ideas are quite good, but never see the light of day. At different times and within alternate companies they later become excellent products. There are many factors that contribute to good ideas apparently 'failing' to be released. Rarely are there papers or discussions held to dissect what factors led to their apparent rejection. Companies often repeat innovation mistakes, without benefitting from the hindsight from others. I will illustrate many media based products I have been involved with and were left on the shelf, only to come to life later. Although innovative enough, I will share the insights that probably led them not to ...
CHI 2016 SIGCHI Lifetime Research Award: Robert E Kraut - Online Communication and Psychological Well-Being Robert E Kraut, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, United States Online Communication and Psychological Well-Being Since the dawn of the Internet era, researchers, policy-makers and the general public have questioned how new technology is influencing our psychological well-being. This talk will review research I?ve done with students and collaborators over the past 18 years to cast light on this question. Our earliest work in the 1990s indicated that more Internet use, independent of type, predicted increases in depression and declines in other measures of well-being. However, later research that differentiated communication with stronger from communication with weaker ties an...
Jeff A Johnson, UI Wizards, Inc, San Francisco, United States Mind The Gap Over his career, Jeff has oscillated between research and practice. Now he finds himself settling into the role of "educator of practitioners": translating research for designers and developers. Come hear how the oscillation started, what the tensions are between research and practice, and how to (and NOT to) make research useful to practitioners. Some examples will come from Jeff's recent work helping practitioners design products and services for an aging population. He'll add in a few choice photos from Africa. You know you made my life complete
You put the rhythm in my feet
I look at you and it all makes sense
Breaking down all my defence
You put the heart into my soul
And let the music take control
When you're dancing next to me
Everything comes naturally
CHORUS
And my heart just skips a beat
And I loose myself completely
From my head down to my feet
When my baby dances with me
Heart just skips a beat
Lose myself completely
Head down to my feet
(oh when my baby)
Baby dances with me
You put the colour in my life
When everything was black and white
You said that we were meant to be
You just can't fight the chemistry
In perfect rhythm on the floor
Soulmates now and ever more
You said lets dance, I said I will
More and more the time stood still
CHORUS
And my heart just skips a beat
And I loose myself completely
From my head down to my feet
When my baby dances with me
Heart just skips a beat
(oh when my baby)
Lose myself completely
Head down to my feet
(oh when my baby)
Baby dances with me
You put the heart into my soul
And let the music take control
When you're dancing next to me
Everything comes naturally
CHORUS
And my heart just skips a beat
And I loose myself completely
From my head down to my feet
When my baby dances with me
