John McCain is a poor student, except at wrestling, but toughs it out in Annapolis at the US Naval Academy with the goal of becoming a career naval officer like his father and grandfather, who were both admirals. Love at first sight leads to a marriage and children with Carole. During the Vietnam War, he's shot down and captured by the Vietcong, who torture American POWs. He resists years of torture and misery, only breaking once due to his busted limbs, and eventually returning home after five and one half years in captivity.

What Saddam did was put troops behind troops to shoot them if they ran, putting them in what Sun Tzu called "death ground" forcing them to fight or die. Muslims do not like to fight for a secular nation that way western soldiers do. The Iraqi army soldiers for the most part are just collecting a pay check. When they go against the guys with the Koran scripture head bands they panic and run because they have a superstitious fear of Allah. Even in Europe centuries ago soldiers only followed Royals because they were suppose to be descended from Jesus, that is where the Royals claimed authority to rule over men and why men followed them. But eventually they were seen as corrupt and now Royal families only hold a ceremonial position in western society. A similar concept is at play here. Muslim soldiers do not want to fight and die for a western style democracy.

U.S. Senator John McCain says he has received information that China has placed artillery in disputed South China Sea territories, during a visit to Vietnam. Full story: U.S. Senator John McCain said on Friday (May 29) that China has placed artillery in disputed territories in the South China Sea. His remarks were made during a visit to Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam. "We just received information about mobile artillery now being placed in the areas that have filled in and reclaimed by the Chinese government, it is a disturbing development and escalatory development," McCain said. China claims most of the South China Sea, through which $5 trillion in ship-borne trade passes every year. The Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan and Brunei also have overlapping claims. McCain said the U.S. may extend help to Vietnam. "We can be very helpful to Vietnam, Philippines and other countries in helping them build up their maritime capabilities. Last year we moved the restriction on maritime weapons to Vietnam, we may want to lift other restrictions," he said. Tensions have risen in the Spratlys in recent months as China has sought to assert its claim to the potentially energy-rich waters, warning Philippine and U.S. military aircraft away from the reefs it is turning into islands. Both Beijing and Washington have accused each other of stoking instability. "We refused to respond to Chinese radio transmission that our aircraft identify themselves. We will continue that. We will continue to make sure China understands that we will not respect any kind of sovereignty in those islands," McCain said, when asked about the incident. "We are not going to have a conflict with China but we can take certain measures which will be disincentives to China for them to continue these kind of activities," he added. McCain is a Vietnam War veteran and his visit coincides with 40 years after the end of that war. After Vietnam, McCain is headed to Singapore to attend the Asia Security Summit, also known as the Shangri-La Dialogue.
