Sub-Saharan Africa as a geographical term refers to the area of the continent of Africa that lies south of the Sahara. A political definition of Sub-Saharan Africa, instead, covers all African countries which are fully or partially located south of the Sahara (excluding Sudan). It contrasts with North Africa, which is considered a part of the Arab world.
Since probably the 5.9 kiloyear event, the Saharan and Sub-Saharan regions of Africa have been separated by the extremely harsh climate of the sparsely populated Sahara, forming an effective barrier interrupted by only the Nile River in Sudan, though the Nile was blocked by the river's cataracts. The Sahara Pump Theory explains how flora and fauna (including Homo sapiens) left Africa to penetrate the Middle East and beyond to Europe and Asia. African pluvial periods are associated with a "wet Sahara" phase during which larger lakes and more rivers exist.

Richmond and his research group at Berkeley are interested in identifying efficient and versatile ways to prepare natural products, which are compounds isolated from living organisms that form the basis for over 50% of the medicines that are currently on the market. His passion to pursue science with potential medicinal value was driven by the scourge of river blindness and AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa, which he witnessed first hand.

How can trade improve food security in sub-Saharan Africa?
For decades, earnings from farming in many developing countries, including in sub-Saharan Africa, have been depressed by a pro-urban bias in own-country policies, as well as by governments of richer countries favouring their farmers with import barriers and subsidies. Both sets of policies reduced global economic welfare and agricultural trade, and almost certainly added to global inequality and poverty and to food insecurity in many low-income countries. Progress has been made over the past three decades in reducing the trend levels of agricultural protection in high-income countries and of agricultural disincentives in African and other dev

Since the term “data revolution” was brandished in the High-Level Panel report on the Post-2015 Development Agenda, there has been a great deal of activity to define, develop, and drive an agenda that could transform the way development statistics are collected and used throughout the world. But nowhere is the need for better data more urgent than in sub-Saharan Africa. Despite a decade of rapid economic growth in most countries, the accuracy of many types of basic data remains low, and improvements have been sluggish.
Country action should drive the data revolution from the bottom up, but high-level activities surrounding the post-2015 development agenda can and must help catalyze progress on national statistics. This event will highlight the need for more timely, accurate, and open data in Africa, and discuss strategies to help national governments, donors, technical agencies, and the producers and users of statistics to drive a data revolution that can be led and sustained in the region.
The event will mark the launch of the Data for African Development Working Group report, Delivering on the Data Revolution in Sub-Saharan Africa, co-chaired by Amanda Glassman from the Center for Global Development and Alex Ezeh from the African Population Health and Research Center in Nairobi, Kenya.

Both sets of policies reduced global economic welfare and agricultural trade, and almost certainly added to global inequality and poverty and to food insecurity in many low-income countries. Progress has been made over the past three decades in reducing the trend levels of agricultural protection in high-income countries and of agricultural disincentives in African and other developing countries. However, there is a propensity for governments to insulate their domestic food market from fluctuations in international prices, and that has not waned. That action amplifies international food price fluctuations, yet when both food-importing and food-exporting countries so engage in insulating behaviour, it does little to advance their national food security. Anderson argues much scope remains to improve economic welfare and reduce poverty and food insecurity by removing trade distortions. He summarizes indicators of these trends and fluctuations in trade barriers before pointing to changes in both border policies and complementary domestic measures that together could improve African food security.

Africa Today - Solving EU migration crisis: The Africa plan
Nearly 2000 people have died trying to cross the narrow strip of water from Libya to the islands of Lampedusa and Malta.
And it's estimated that over 500,000 desperate migrants, 86% of whom come from Sub-Saharan Africa, are waiting in Libya, waiting for their turn to get on a boat.
During the rule of Colonel Gaddafi, the refugee flows were much smaller, thanks to a financial deal the late dictator struck with the EU.
Prompted by Italy, Malta and Greece, and shamed by TV pictures of the dead, EU leaders this week emerged from their negotiations, hailing a 10-point plan, which focused on security, rather than care.

The western black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis longipes) or West African black rhinoceros was a subspecies of the black rhinoceros, declared extinct by the IUCN in 2011. They were believed to have been genetically different from other rhino subspecies. It was once widespread in the savanna of sub-Saharan Africa, but its numbers declined due to poaching. The western black rhinoceros resided primarily in Cameroon, but recent surveys have failed to locate any individuals.
The western black rhinoceros was heavily hunted in the beginning of the 20th century, but the population rose in the 1930s after preservation actions were taken. As protection efforts declined over the years, so did the number of western black rhinos. By 1980 the population was in the hundreds. No animals are known to be held in captivity, however it was believed in 1988 that approximately 20–30 were being kept for breeding purposes. Poaching continued and by 2000 only an estimated 10 survived. In 2001, this number dwindled to only five. While it was believed that around thirty still existed in 2004, this was later found to be based upon falsified data.
The western black rhino emerged about 7 to 8 million years ago. It was a sub-species of the black rhino. For much of the 1900s, its population was the highest out of all the rhino species at almost 850,000 individuals. There was a 96% population decline in black rhinos, including the western black rhino, between 1970 and 1992. Widespread poaching is concluded to be partly responsible for bringing the species close to extinction. By 1995 the number of western black rhinos had dropped to 2,500 individuals. Now, no individuals are known to exist. The sub-species was declared officially extinct in 2011,with its last sighting reported in 2006 in Cameroon's Northern Province.
In 2006, for six months, the NGO Symbiose and veterinarians Isabelle and Jean-François Lagrot with their local teams examined the common roaming ground of Diceros bicornis longipes in the northern province of Cameroon to assess the status of the last population of the western black rhino subspecies. For this experiment, 2500 km of land was surveyed but no sign of rhino presence was found over the course of six months. The teams had concluded that the rhino was extinct approximately five years before it was officially declared so by the IUCN.

Lian Zeitz Keystone on Global Mental Health Action in Sub-Saharan Africa, Quest Univ, April 2015
Not much has been said by individual African leaders. Do African leaders, activists and intellectuals have any alternative to the EU plan?
They're the images that have shocked the world. So far, some 2000 migrants have died trying to cross the sea from Libya to Malta and islands off the coast of Italy and Greece.
And despite the danger - the men, women and children keep on coming. It's estimated that over 500,000 mainly African migrants, are waiting their turn.
During Colonel Gaddafi's regime, the migration was controlled thanks to a deal the late dictator struck with the EU. But since Libya's collapse, the people traffickers have been able to carry out their work freely.
Some have blamed this rise in deaths on the EU's decision last year to scale down its search and rescue operation - called Mare Nostrum.
Last month, European leaders held an emergency meeting in Brussels, which produced a 10-point plan for increased funding for naval patrols, prosecution of the traffickers, and the destruction of their boats.
But many Africans are asking, what do our leaders think? What is the response of countries like Eritrea, Ethiopia, Nigeria, and Gambia, which produce so many of the migrants? Why is African voice so silent? That's what we'll be investigating this week on Africa Today.

Enhancing U.S. Engagement on Maternal and Child Health
Hosted by the office of U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren
Capitol Visitors Center
Breakfast will be provided.
Please join us for a panel discussion to examine U.S. policy options to advance maternal, neonatal, and child health in Sub-Saharan Africa. The conversation will focus on four broad themes:
How the U.S. can best partner with countries to strengthen the delivery of maternal, neonatal and child health services at the community level;
The lessons learned from successful vaccine programs that may be relevant for other health programming areas;
The role played by PEPFAR in serving as a platform for maternal, neonatal, and child health services, and what is likely to happen as PEPFAR undergoes geographic and programmatic realignment; and
How the U.S. can support partner countries in mobilizing resources for sustainable maternal, neonatal, and child health programs now and in the future.
The event will feature a new CSIS report, and associated web microsite, from a February 2015 delegation to the United Republic of Tanzania. The delegation examined U.S.-Tanzania bilateral cooperation on maternal, neonatal, and child health, as well as the ways in which U.S.-supported programs complement the efforts on immunization carried out by the Government of Tanzania in partnership with Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance.

The Face of Disease in Sub-Saharan Africa | Richmond Sarpong | TEDxBerkeley
What do you think of when you hear, "disease in sub-Saharan Africa?" Richmond Sarpong invites us to reject stereotypes and redefine the face of disease in Africa.
Richmond Sarpong, who was born in Ghana, West Africa, is a professor of chemistry in the Department of Chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley, where he has been since 2004. He moved to the United States in 1991 after a childhood and adolescent years in Ghana, Zambia, and Botswana, respectively.
He was an undergraduate student at Macalester College, obtained his Ph.D. from Princeton University, and conducted a postdoctoral stay at Caltech.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

Mansa Musa and Islam in Africa: Crash Course World History #16
In which John Green teaches you about Sub-Saharan Africa! So, what exactly was going on there? It turns out, it was a lot of trade, converting to Islam, visits from Ibn Battuta, trade, beautiful women, trade, some impressive architecture, and several empires. John not only cover the the West African Malian Empire, which is the one Mansa Musa ruled, but he discusses the Ghana Empire, and even gets over to East Africa as well to discuss the trade-based city-states of Mogadishu, Mombasa, and Zanzibar. In addition to all this, John considers emigrating to Canada.

How can trade improve food security in sub-Saharan Africa?
How can trade improve food security in sub-Saharan Africa?
For decades, earnings from farming in many developing countries, including in sub-Saharan Africa, have been depressed by a pro-urban bias in own-country policies, as well as by governments of richer countries favouring their farmers with import barriers and subsidies. Both sets of policies reduced global economic welfare and agricultural trade, and almost certainly added to global inequality and poverty and to food insecurity in many low-income countries.

Sign up now at https://www.futurelearn.com/courses/africa-sustainable-development 'Africa: Sustainable Development for All?' is a free online course by the University of Aberdeen available on FutureLearn.com
Africa as a continent is rich in natural resources and minerals and has increasing rates of wealth in some countries. The course will explore why there continues to be many sub-Saharan African countries which perform poorly on development indicators for reducing poverty, hunger and unemployment and improving maternal health and access to quality reproductive health services.
This free online course will assess progress made to date in the achievement of the UN Millennium Development Goals and will provide information from key people in international development to discuss whether the proposed UN post-2015 sustainable development agenda can be achieved in sub-Saharan Africa. The course is designed for anyone with a passion for humanity, human rights and sustainable development. You will learn to think critically and communicate effectively about development stories, past, present and future.
We will introduce the key concepts in sustainable development, the historical background and current context. You will look at the organisations involved in development and how they have changed over time.
We will also explain how development data are constructed, and the strengths and limitations of different types of evidence. We will highlight who has been counted in development data, how robust the data are and who is missing from data sets.
At FutureLearn, we want to inspire learning for life. We offer a diverse selection of free, high quality online courses from some of the world's leading universities and other outstanding cultural institutions. Browse all courses and sign up here: http://www.futurelearn.com

Part3: North and Sub-Saharan Africa
This is third segment of a four-part interview with Raul Guevara Diaz, the spokesman from the Azanian National Union. ANU is an ethno-cultural national revival movement that advocates the unification of Africa but not in the pan-African sense. Instead, the ANU believes in a return to pre-colonial pre-Christianity African governance.
Raul draws challenges the idea that northern Africa is racially and culturally separate to Sub-Saharan Africa, charting the relationship of deities assumed to be to be unique to Egypt throughout the Continent. check out misbeee.blogspot.co.uk for fuller information.

She found what cable news ignores: a continent of ambitious reformers and young social entrepreneurs, driven by kanju—creativity b
