The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is the agency of the United States government that is responsible for the nation's civilian space program and for aeronautics and aerospace research. Since February 2006, NASA's mission statement has been to "pioneer the future in space exploration, scientific discovery and aeronautics research." This artwork was created as a submission to the Humans in Space Art Challenge supported by NASA and USRA.
Our project aim is to explore space through our imagination, that’s why, for the Humans in Space Art Challenge, 2014 we have chosen the following story. All drawings and animations are made by ourselves. Now, let’s see our story
Jamie has always wanted to become an astronaut. From the very age of four, he dreamed about stars, about space, extraterrestrial life, etc. When he grew up, he started to daydream all the time about being part of NASA, trying to understand how Space is working, reading about how important the International Space Station is for collecting data about our planet, how important it is to have technology in outer space. All these can provide a better life on Earth and a better understanding on what we live on. We can now observe the movement of the water on our planet, we can prevent natural disasters. Also, the ISS helps farmers monitor the crop growth or fertility changes.
Returning with our feet on the ground, let’s see what Jamie will do next. Motivated by becoming an astronaut, Jamie has applied to NASA in order to follow his dream. As his ordinary life was moving forward, something amazing changed everything in Jamie’s life. As he was just arriving home, of course dreaming about his passion, space, he found a letter left on the ground. He opened the envelope, and he couldn’t believe what his eyes were reading. “Congratulations, you’ve become an astronaut”. Jamie packed everything and went straight to NASA, he was going to depart soon, as they said.
Living the dream, his mission was to sent life in outer space, see how a genetically modified plant will react on the Moon.
As he arrived on the Moon, he left the plant, explored the Moon, and head back to Earth. What he didn’t know was that all this time he was observed by someone, a strange looking guy, all green with a bizarre antenna on his head. As he left the plant on the Moon, the alien changed the plant, making it immune of the Moon conditions, making it better on surviving on Space.
To conclude, sometimes, the things we were searching our whole life can be continued through dream and aspriation. The truth can be found closer than you expected.

More than just a theatrical production, Stargazing is a year-long initiative of alight dance theater featuring: community engagement events,
a series of performing arts field trips benefitting over 200 Prince George's County schoolchildren and a culminating theatrical premiere at Dance Place in Washington, D.C. on June 29 and 30, 2013.
Stargazing has been made possible through the generous support of the Greenbelt Community Foundation, the Freddie Mac Foundation, the Prince George's Arts & Humanities Council, the City of Greenbelt and Molly Lester.

Whitley Strieber, who reviewed some of his past alien encounters, and talked about the idea of underground bases on Earth, which he's explored in his latest novel, Alien Hunter: Underworld. Once we go below the crust of the planet past five or six miles, there's thousand of miles more, and we don't know or understand exactly what could be down there, he pointed out. There've long been rumors about a secret underground base at Dulce, NM, and that area has had a large number of cattle mutilations and strange lights seen on the mesas, Strieber noted, adding that the local Jicarilla tribe has a legend they were created inside the mesa.

New Horizons: Passport to Pluto and Beyond - Documentary [HD]
Mission Overview: Why Go to Pluto ? Planetary exploration is a historic endeavor and a major focus of NASA. New Horizons is designed to help us understand worlds at the edge of our solar system by making the first reconnaissance of Pluto and Charon - a "double planet" and the last planet in our solar system to be visited by spacecraft.
Then, as part of an extended mission, New Horizons would visit one or more objects in the Kuiper Belt region beyond Neptune.
Science at the Frontier
Our solar system contains three zones: the inner, rocky planets; the gas giant planets; and the Kuiper Belt. Pluto is one of the largest bodies of the icy, "third zone" of our solar system. The National Academy of Sciences placed the exploration of the third zone in general - and Pluto-Charon in particular - among its highest priority planetary mission rankings for this decade. New Horizons is NASA's mission to fulfill this objective.
In those zones, our solar system has three classes of planets: the rocky worlds (Earth, Venus, Mercury and Mars); the gas giants (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune); and the ice dwarfs of the Kuiper Belt. There are far more ice dwarf planets than rocky and gas giant worlds combined - yet, no spacecraft has been sent to a planet in this class. The National Academy of Sciences noted that our knowledge of planetary types is therefore seriously incomplete. As the first mission to investigate this new class of planetary bodies, New Horizons will fill this important gap and round out our knowledge of the planets in our solar system.
Ancient Relics
The ice dwarfs are planetary embryos, whose growth stopped at sizes (200 to 2,000 kilometers across) much smaller than the full-grown planets in the inner solar system and the gas giants region. The ice dwarfs are ancient relics that formed over 4 billion years ago. Because they are literally the bodies out of which the larger planets accumulated, the ice dwarfs have a great deal to teach us about planetary formation. New Horizons seeks those answers.
Binary Planet
Pluto's largest moon, Charon, is half the size of Pluto. The pair form a binary planet, whose gravitational balance point is between the two bodies. Although binary planets are thought to be common in the galaxy, as are binary stars, no spacecraft has yet explored one. New Horizons will be the first mission to a binary object of any type.
A Mission with Impact
The Kuiper Belt is the major source of cometary impactors on Earth, like the impactor that wiped out the dinosaurs. New Horizons will shed new light on the number of such Kuiper Belt impactors as a function of their size by cataloging the various-sized craters on Pluto, its moons, and on Kuiper Belt Objects.
Pluto and the Kuiper Belt are known to be heavily endowed with organic (carbon-bearing) molecules and water ice — the raw materials out of which life evolves. New Horizons will explore the composition of this material on the surfaces of Pluto, its moons and Kuiper Belt Objects.
The Great Escape
Pluto's atmosphere is escaping to space like a comet, but on a planetary scale. Nothing like this exists anywhere else in the solar system. It is thought that the Earth's original hydrogen/helium atmosphere was lost to space this way. By studying Pluto's atmospheric escape, we can learn a great deal about the evolution of Earth's atmosphere. New Horizons will determine Pluto's atmospheric structure and composition and directly measure its escape rate for the first time.
The Need to Explore
As the first voyage to a whole new class of planets in the farthest zone of the solar system, New Horizons is a historic mission of exploration. The United States has made history by being the first nation to reach every planet from Mercury to Neptune with a space probe. The New Horizons mission to Pluto and the Kuiper Belt - the first NASA launch to a "new" planet since Voyager more than 30 years ago - allows the U.S. to complete the reconnaissance of the solar system.

The sun emitted a significant solar flare, peaking at 7:24 p.m. EST on Dec. 19, 2014. NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory, which watches the sun constantly, captured an image of the event. Solar flares are powerful bursts of radiation. Harmful radiation from a flare cannot pass through Earth's atmosphere to physically affect humans on the ground, however -- when intense enough -- they can disturb the atmosphere in the layer where GPS and communications signals travel.
To see how this event may affect Earth, please visit NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center at http://spaceweather.gov, the U.S. government's official source for space weather forecasts, alerts, watches and warnings.
This flare is classified as an X1.8-class flare. X-class denotes the most intense flares, while the number provides more information about its strength. An X2 is twice as intense as an X1, an X3 is three times as intense, etc.

Credit: Science@NASA
A favorite theme of science fiction is "the portal"--an extraordinary opening in space or time that connects travelers to distant realms. A good portal is a shortcut, a guide, a door into the unknown. If only they actually existed....
It turns out that they do, sort of, and a NASA-funded researcher at the University of Iowa has figured out how to find them.
"We call them X-points or electron diffusion regions," explains plasma physicist Jack Scudder of the University of Iowa. "They're places where the magnetic field of Earth connects to the magnetic field of the Sun, creating an uninterrupted path leading from our own planet to the sun's atmosphere 93 million miles away."
Observations by NASA's THEMIS spacecraft and Europe's Cluster probes suggest that these magnetic portals open and close dozens of times each day. They're typically located a few tens of thousands of kilometers from Earth where the geomagnetic field meets the onrushing solar wind. Most portals are small and short-lived; others are yawning, vast, and sustained. Tons of energetic particles can flow through the openings, heating Earth's upper atmosphere, sparking geomagnetic storms, and igniting bright polar auroras.
NASA is planning a mission called "MMS," short for Magnetospheric Multiscale Mission, due to launch in 2014, to study the phenomenon. Bristling with energetic particle detectors and magnetic sensors, the four spacecraft of MMS will spread out in Earth's magnetosphere and surround the portals to observe how they work.
Just one problem: Finding them. Magnetic portals are invisible, unstable, and elusive. They open and close without warning "and there are no signposts to guide us in," notes Scudder.
Actually, there are signposts, and Scudder has found them.
Portals form via the process of magnetic reconnection. Mingling lines of magnetic force from the sun and Earth criss-cross and join to create the openings. "X-points" are where the criss-cross takes place. The sudden joining of magnetic fields can propel jets of charged particles from the X-point, creating an "electron diffusion region."
To learn how to pinpoint these events, Scudder looked at data from a space probe that orbited Earth more than 10 years ago.
"In the late 1990s, NASA's Polar spacecraft spent years in Earth's magnetosphere," explains Scudder, "and it encountered many X-points during its mission."
Data from NASA's Polar spacecraft, circa 1998, provided crucial clues to finding magnetic X-points.Credit: NASA Because Polar carried sensors similar to those of MMS, Scudder decided to see how an X-point looked to Polar. "Using Polar data, we have found five simple combinations of magnetic field and energetic particle measurements that tell us when we've come across an X-point or an electron diffusion region. A single spacecraft, properly instrumented, can make these measurements."
This means that single member of the MMS constellation using the diagnostics can find a portal and alert other members of the constellation. Mission planners long thought that MMS might have to spend a year or so learning to find portals before it could study them. Scudder's work short cuts the process, allowing MMS to get to work without delay.
It's a shortcut worthy of the best portals of fiction, only this time the portals are real. And with the new "signposts" we know how to find them.

Hidden Portals in Earth's Magnetic Field
07.02.12
A NASA-sponsored researcher at the University of Iowa has developed a way for spacecraft to hunt down hidden magnetic portals in the vicinity of Earth. These gateways link the magnetic field of our planet to that of the sun, setting the stage for stormy space weather. The Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission will study these portals.

The sun emitted a mid-level solar flare, peaking at 3:01 p.m. EDT on Oct. 2, 2014. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory, which watches the sun 24-hours a day, captured images of the flare. Solar flares are powerful bursts of radiation. Harmful radiation from a flare cannot pass through Earth's atmosphere to physically affect humans on the ground, however -- when intense enough -- they can disturb the atmosphere in the layer where GPS and communications signals travel.
This flare is classified as an M7.3 flare. M-class flares are one-tenth as powerful as the most powerful flares, which are designated X-class flares.

John Akomfrah - The Last Angel of History (1995) - Der Datendieb reist durch die Geschichte der Schwarzen Kultur und sammelt Fragmente zur Bewusstwerdung seiner Identität.
"A 45-minute meditation on black consciousness whose dense, almost chaotic weave of images and ideas offers space travel and science fiction as metaphors for the experience of the African diaspora."—Chicago Reader
A sci-fi drama/documentary on Afro-futurism and black unpopular culture. The film includes interviews with Ishmael Reed, Goldie, Nichelle Nichols, George Clinton and Underground Resistance. The Last Angel of History is one of the most influential video-essays of the 1990s influencing filmmakers and inspiring conferences, novels and exhibitions. BAFC’s exploration of the chromatic possibilities of digital video is embedded within a mythology of the future that creates connections between black unpopular culture, outer space and the limits of the human condition. Produced by Black Audio Film Collective in association with ZDF, ArteTV, Channel Four.
John Akomfrah, director of Seven Songs of Malcolm X, returns with an engaging and searing examination of the hitherto unexplored relationships between Pan-African culture, science fiction, intergalactic travel, and rapidly progressing computer technology.
This cinematic essay posits science fiction (with tropes such as alien abduction, estrangement, and genetic engineering) as a metaphor for the Pan-African experience of forced displacement, cultural alienation, and otherness.
Akomfrah's analysis is rooted in an exploration of the cultural works of Pan-African artists, such as funkmaster George Clinton and his Mothership Connection, Sun Ra's use of extraterrestrial iconography, and the very explicit connection drawn between these issues in the writings of black science fiction authors Samuel R. Delaney and Octavia Butler.
Included are interviews with black cultural figures, from musicians DJ Spooky, Goldie, and Derek May, who discuss the importance of George Clinton to their own music, to George Clinton himself. Astronaut Dr. Bernard A. Harris Jr. describes his experiences as one of the first African-Americans in space, while Star Trek actress Nichelle Nichols tells of her campaign for a greater role for African-Americans in NASA. Novelist Ishmael Reed and cultural critics Greg Tate and Kodwo Eshun tease out the parallels between black life and science fiction, while Delaney and Butler discuss the motivations behind their choice of the genre to express ideas about the black experience.
In keeping with the futuristic tenor of the film, the interviews are intercut with images of Pan-African life from different periods of history, jumping between time and space from the past to the future to the present, not unlike the mode of many rock videos or surfing the Internet.
"The playfulness and intellectual virtuosity of the film transcends its surface gloss, to become a kaleidoscopic celebration of the richness of Pan-African culture."—Jeffrey Skoller, School of the Art Institute, Chicago, for Afterimage
"A compelling vision of futurism in black society."—Dallas Observer

Stargazing
#HISAChallenge
This artwork was created as a submission to the Humans in Space Art Challenge supported by NASA and USRA.

New Horizons: Passport to Pluto and Beyond - Documentary [HD]
New Horizons: Passport to Pluto and Beyond - Documentary [HD]
Mission Overview: Why Go to Pluto ? Planetary exploration is a historic endeavor and a major focus of NASA. New Horizons is designed to help us understand worlds at the edge of our solar system by making the first reconnaissance of Pluto and Charon - a "double planet" and the last planet in our solar system to be visited by spacecraft.

NASA’s Newest Space Telescope is Calibrated by the Same Technology Now Used in LASIK
The Hubble Space Telescope launched with an error in the telescope’s mirror, which blurred its images for its first years in orbit. For NASA’s upcoming James Webb Space Telescope, traveling much farther out in space, there can’t be a mistake.
The technology that’s ensuring perfect vision for the James Webb Space Telescope is the same technology that’s now used in LASIK. Abbott just launched the iDesign Advanced WaveScan Studio System, a measurement and treatment tool that uses a new sensor to create a precise, personalized LASIK treatment.

NASA | Holiday Lights On the Sun

OSU engineering students collaborate with NASA on deep space habitat
From January to May, students created shuttle elements from scratch and tested them using virtual reality. Everything from toilets and showers to exercise equipment and storage. Every two weeks, the students video conferenced with NASA engineers to check on the progress.
"They would look at what we had done over the past two weeks and give us pointers and critiques," said OSU junior Jo Sands.
"They very professionally took the criticism that NASA gave in terms of where to make the changes and, quite simply, amazed us," Joe said.
It's classroom experience taken to a real world level. Students drove their final masterpiece to NASA this past May, and presented it to engineers in person.
"There were some designs they were really interested in. So that was good to see," said OSU senior Tom Thomas.
The students are very modest about their achievement, but Joe says they did extraordinary work and NASA was impressed. The designs will likely influence the first deep space mission.
"You have to satisfy the customer and that customer was NASA," said Joe. "And NASA was very happy and satisfied at the design."
The course is titled Industrial Engineering 4373-5373. NASA hopes to continue this exclusive partnership so students year after year can help with different projects.

Richard C. Hoagland is a former space science museum curator; a former NASA consultant, and during the historic Apollo Missions to the Moon, was science advisor to Walter Cronkite and CBS News. For over 20 years, Hoagland has been leading an outside scientific team in a critically acclaimed independent analysis of possible intelligently-designed artifacts on Mars. Richard and his team’s investigations have been quietly extended to include over 30 years of previously hidden data from NASA, Soviet, and Pentagon missions to the Moon.
Keith Laney is a space imagery expert, and researcher who’s been working with Richard C. Hoagland for about a good decade.

Richard Charles Hoagland (born April 25, 1945 in Morristown, New Jersey), is an American author, and a proponent of various conspiracy theories about NASA, lost alien civilizations on the Moon and on Mars and other related topics.
His writings claim that advanced civilizations exist or once existed on the Moon, Mars and on some of the moons of Jupiter and Saturn, and that NASA and the United States government have conspired to keep these facts secret. He has advocated his ideas in two published books, videos, lectures, interviews, and press conferences. His views have never been published in peer-reviewed journals. Hoagland has no university degree.
