This is an unedited clip from an interview I conducted with Dr. William Lipscomb back then. He was a huge chemist/thinker/Nobel Prize winner, Harvard Professor. The subject of my interview was on the future of “the information society.” I liked the way he thought and how he saw the connection between biology, and information technology. Way ahead of his time.

Garnett R. (G.R.) Davis is Adjunct Artist Teacher of Tuba and Euphonium at Blair School of Music, Vanderbilt University, where he
currently teaches pre-college students. He has been an adjunct tuba professor at Tennessee State University, Fisk University,
Belmont University, Lipscomb University and Murray State University in the past. He holds the B.S. Degree in Music Education
from the University of North Alabama and the M.M Degree in Tuba Performance from Indiana University where he was a graduate
teaching assistant to Harvey G. Phillips. He also studied with William J. Bell at Indiana University.
Mr. Davis served in the 74th Army Band 1969-1971. He also served in the Marine Corps detachment of the U.S. Armed Forces
Bicentennial Band and Chorus, 1974-76 in tours of all 50 states, Canada, and the Caribbean representing the U.S. Department of
Defense during the U.S. Bicentennial Celebration. He worked as a free lance musician in Chicago and Indianapolis and in the staff
orchestra at the Executive Inn Showroom in Owensboro, Kentucky. He has played for Frank Sinatra, Henry Mancini, Mills Brothers,
Johnny Desmond, Frankie Avalon, Shirley Jones, Frankie Masters, Della Reese, Paducah (Kentucky) Symphony, The Bradley Brass,
Tennessee Jazz Orchestra, and in the Firehouse Jazz Band and the General Jackson Showboat Orchestra at Opryland USA. He plays
regularly with the Jerry Vinett Big Band, the Lynn Beal Big Band, the Todd Hill Orchestra, the Nashville Wind Ensemble and Die
Musikmeisters German Band. He has played with several Bluegrass Bands and with the Irish Band, Nashville Weather. He is the
conductor of Tuba Christmas in Nashville, a yearly concert which attracts 100-200 players and an audience of around 2,000.
His students have been winners in such competitions as the Nortel Young Artists Competition, the Colonel George S. Howard
Young Artists Competition at the U.S.Air Force Band, the Knoxville (Tennessee), Paducah (Kentucky) and Nashville (Tennessee)
Youth Symphony Concerto Competitions. Another student honor included participation in the High School All Star Tuba-
Euphonium Ensemble at the International Tuba-Euphonium Conference. Several of his pre-college students have been selected for
the Tennessee All-State Band and six students have been first chair. Three of his students have won the prestigious Governor’s
Scholarship which pays full tuition to the Interlochen Arts Camp. Two of his students have received full scholarships to the
Tanglewood Institute. Other students have received full tuition college scholarships to Vanderbilt University and University of
Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music.
Mr. Davis has also served as choir director at Kingston Springs (Tennessee) United Methodist Church 1999-2004 and at
Goodlettsville (Tennessee) Cumberland Presbyterian Church 2004-2006. He is a life member of Local 257 (Nashville) of the
American Federation of Musicians. He is also a life member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Music Fraternity. He has served as Secretary
of the Harvey Phillips Foundation (musical projects) since its inception in 1978.
This is G.R.’s artist interview with Erica Lee. During the interview, G.R. played on a Kurath “F” tuba, a 1920’s vintage BBb Martin
Helicon (pre-cursor to the sousaphone), a 1930’s vintage Czech double bass by John Juzek and a 1960’s vintage Fender Mustang
electric bass.

Murder In Scottsdale - Crime Documentary: Slightly less than an hour in duration, this documentary interviews law enforcement authorities and family members relevant to the twice-investigated, real-life murder of Hollywood star Bob Crane, bludgeoned to death in his rented apartment in June of 1978, in Scottsdale, Arizona. In addition to interviews, the program includes graphic, real-life crime scene photos. Video reenactments also help viewers understand what happened, as does a floor plan of the apartment.
The main suspect was, and remains, video buff John Carpenter, Crane's sleazy partner who got Crane interested in filming his sex escapades with random women. Indeed, photos of the apartment show a ton of video equipment. The presumed murder weapon was a heavy camera tripod.
Police botched the original investigation, and Carpenter was not put on trial. Years later a new investigation produced new evidence, which then did result in a courtroom trial, a small part of which is shown in this program. And through the years, various theories have popped up that include other people as suspects. As of now, Crane's murder remains officially "unsolved".
"Murder In Scottsdale" will appeal to anyone interested either in Bob Crane's story or in unsolved, true-life crimes in general.

William Nunn Lipscomb, Jr. (December 9, 1919 – April 14, 2011) was a Nobel Prize-winning American inorganic and organic chemist working in nuclear magnetic resonance, theoretical chemistry, boron chemistry, and biochemistry.
Lipscomb was born in Cleveland, Ohio. His family moved to Lexington, Kentucky in 1920, and he lived there until he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry at the University of Kentucky in 1941. He went on to earn his Doctor of Philosophy degree in Chemistry from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in 1946.
From 1946 to 1959 he taught at the University of Minnesota. From 1959 to 1990 he was a professor of chemistry at Harvard University, where he was a professor emeritus since 1990.
Lipscomb was married to the former Mary Adele Sargent from 1944 to 1983. They had three children, one of whom lived only a few hours. He married Jean Evans in 1983. They had one adopted daughter.
Lipscomb resided in Cambridge, Massachusetts until his death in 2011 from pneumonia.

Garnett R. (G.R.) Davis is Adjunct Artist Teacher of Tuba and Euphonium at Blair School of Music, Vanderbilt University, where he currently teaches pre-college students. He has been an adjunct tuba professor at Tennessee State University, Fisk University, Belmont University, Lipscomb University and Murray State University in the past. He holds the B.S. Degree in Music Education from the University of North Alabama and the M.M Degree in Tuba Performance from Indiana University where he was a graduate teaching assistant to Harvey G. Phillips. Murder In Scottsdale - Crime Documentary: Slightly less than an hour in duration, this documentary interviews law enforcement authorities and family members relevant to the twice-investigated, real-life murder of Hollywood star Bob Crane, bludgeoned to death in his rented apartment in June of 1978, in Scottsdale, Arizona. In addition to interviews, the program includes graphic, real-life crime scene photos. Video reenactments also help viewers understand what happened, as does a floor plan of the apartment. The main suspect was, and remains, video buff John Carpenter, Crane's sleazy partner who got Crane interested in filming his sex escapades with random women. Bicentennial Band and Chorus, 1974-76 in tours of all 50 states, Canada, and the Caribbean representing the U.S. Department of
Defense during the U.S. Bicentennial Celebration. He worked as a free lance musician in Chicago and Indianapolis and in the staff
orchestra at the Executive Inn Showroom in Owensboro, Kentucky. He has played for Frank Sinatra, Henry Mancini, Mills Brothers,
Johnny Desmond, Frankie Avalon, Shirley Jones, Frankie Masters, Della Reese, Paducah (Kentucky) Symphony, The Bradley Brass,
Tennessee Jazz Orchestra, and in the Firehouse Jazz Band and the General Jackson Showboat Orchestra at Opryland USA. He plays
regularly with the Jerry Vinett Big Band, the Lynn Beal Big Band, the Todd Hill Orchestra, the Nashville Wind Ensemble and Die
Musikmeisters German Band. He has played with several Bluegrass Bands and with the Irish Band, Nashville Weather. He is the
conductor of Tuba Christmas in Nashville, a yearly concert which attracts 100-200 players and an audience of around 2,000.
His students have been winners in such competitions as the Nortel Young Artists Competition, the Colonel George S. Howard
Young Artists Competition at the U.S.Air Force Band, the Knoxville (Tennessee), Paducah (Kentucky) and Nashville (Tennessee)
Youth Symphony Concerto Competitions. Another student honor included participation in the High School All Star Tuba-
Euphonium Ensemble at the International Tuba-Euphonium Conference. Several of his pre-college students have been selected for
the Tennessee All-State Band and six students have been first chair. Three of his students have won the prestigious Governor’s
Scholarship which pays full tuition to the Interlochen Arts Camp. Two of his students have received full scholarships to the
Tanglewood Institute. Other students have received full tuition college scholarships to Vanderbilt University and University of
Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music.
Mr. Davis has also served as choir director at Kingston Springs (Tennessee) United Methodist Church 1999-2004 and at

Garnett R. (G.R.) Davis is Adjunct Artist Teacher of Tuba and Euphonium at Blair School of Music, Vanderbilt University, where he
currently teaches pre-college students. He has been an adjunct tuba professor at Tennessee State University, Fisk University,
Belmont University, Lipscomb University and Murray State University in the past. He holds the B.S. Degree in Music Education
from the University of North Alabama and the M.M Degree in Tuba Performance from Indiana University where he was a graduate
teaching assistant to Harvey G. Phillips. He also studied with William J. Bell at Indiana University.
Mr. Davis served in the 74th Army Band 1969-1971. He also served in the Marine Corps detachment of the U.S. Armed Forces

In addition to interviews, the program includes graphic, real-life crime scene photos. Video reenactments also help viewers understand what happened, as does a floor plan of the apartment.
The main suspect was, and remains, video buff John Carpenter, Crane's sleazy partner who got Crane interested in filming his sex escapades with random women. Indeed, photos of the apartment show a ton of video equipment. The presumed murder weapon was a heavy camera tripod.
Police botched the original investigation, and Carpenter was not put on trial. Years later a new investigation produced new evidence, which then did result in a courtroom trial, a small part of which is shown in this program. And through the years, various theories have popped up that include other people as suspects. As of now, Crane's murder remains officially "unsolved".
"Murder In Scottsdale" will appeal to anyone interested either in Bob Crane's story or in unsolved, true-life crimes in general.
