Proton (Прото́н) (formal designation: UR-500) is an expendable launch system used for both commercial and Russian government space launches. The first Proton rocket was launched in 1965 and the launch system is still in use as of 2012, which makes it one of the most successful heavy boosters in the history of spaceflight. All Protons are built at the Khrunichev plant in Moscow, and then transported for launch to the Baikonur Cosmodrome, where they are brought to the launch pad horizontally and then raised into vertical position for launch.
Like many Soviet boosters, the names of recurring payloads became associated with their launchers. Thus the moniker "Proton" originates from a series of large scientific Proton satellites, which were among the rocket's first payloads. It is also known as the D-1/D-1e or SL-12/SL-13.
Launch capacity to low Earth orbit is about 22 tonnes (49,000 lb). Geostationary transfer capacity is about 5–6 tonnes (11,000–13,000 lb). Commercial launches are marketed by International Launch Services (ILS). In a typical launch of a commercial communications satellite destined for geostationary orbit, a Proton M/Breeze M can place a spacecraft with mass at separation of 9,127 pounds (4,140 kg) into an orbit with an apogee of 35,786 kilometres (22,236 mi), a perigee of 6,257 kilometres (3,888 mi) and an inclination of 19.7°.

The Proton-M, (Протон-М) GRAU index 8K82M or 8K82KM, is a Russian carrier rocket derived from the Soviet-developed Proton. It is built by Khrunichev, and launched from sites 81 and 200 at the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. Commercial launches are marketed by International Launch Services (ILS), and generally use Site 200/39. The first Proton-M launch occurred on 7 April 2001.

Salyut 1 First Space Station Launch atop Proton rocket
Salyut 1 (DOS-1) (Russian: Салют-1; English: Salute 1) was launched on 19 April 1971. It was the first space station to orbit the Earth.
Its first crew launched in Soyuz 10 but were unable to board due to a failure in the docking mechanism; its second crew launched in Soyuz 11 and remained on board for 23 productive days. The world's first successful manned space station mission was however overshadowed when the crew was killed before the re-entry of Soyuz 11 on 30 June 1971 – a pressure equalisation valve in the descent module of the Soyuz had opened prematurely when the three modules of the spacecraft separated, suffocating all three.

Officials responsible for Wednesday's launch of the International Space Station service module from Kazakhstan have expressed relief that the Russian rocket carrying the module has successfully gone into orbit.
A NASA spokesman said the launch marked \"a very great day for the space programme of both the U-S and Russia.\"
The Russian director of the launch station where the Zvezda module blasted off on Wednesday shared that sentiment, and admitted to earlier fears that the international space station programme would have been put back years if anything went wrong.

The Russian Proton-K rocket that is carrying the long-delayed International Space
Station's service module into orbit lifted off Wednesday from the Baikonur cosmodrome.
At Mission Control outside Moscow, Russian and U.S. space agency officials anxiously monitored a live feed from the cosmodrome broadcast on their console video screens.
A huge screen in front of them displayed the countdown at the cosmodrome on the remote, windswept steppes of Kazakstan.
Technicians pulled back the launch tower from the huge rocket about half an hour before the 8:56 a.m. liftoff.

A Beautiful SpaceX+Rocket+Explosion In Russia (Proton-M) - No Comment
The Proton-M, (Протон-М) GRAU index 8K82M or 8K82KM, is a Russian carrier rocket derived from the Soviet-developed Proton. It is built by Khrunichev, and launched from sites 81 and 200 at the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. Commercial launches are marketed by International Launch Services (ILS), and generally use Site 200/39. The first Proton-M launch occurred on 7 April 2001.

Russia on Tuesday launched three satellites to complement its space navigation system, officials said.
The satellites were sent into orbit on a Proton-M rocket that blasted off successfully from the Baikonur launchpad in Kazakhstan, said Russia's Federal Space Agency spokesman Alexander Vorobyov.
They are to join Russia's Global Navigation Satellite System, or GLONASS (Global Navigation Satellite System).
The system, which serves both military and civilian purposes, was developed during Soviet times and is supposed to have 24 satellites.
Their number dwindled after the 1991 Soviet collapse, but the government has earmarked funds to revive the system to its full strength thanks to Russia's windfall oil revenues.
Russia's First Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Ivanov said that Tuesday's launch would bring the GLONASS satellite fleet to 18 - the number necessary to provide navigation services over the entire Russian territory.
Russian President Vladimir Putin already has a plan for how he may use the GLONASS system: to keep tabs on his black labrador.
Putin on Monday listened to First Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Ivanov as he briefed the Cabinet on the development of GLONASS.
The Russian leader then asked, "When will I be able to buy the necessary equipment for my dog Koni so that she doesn't run too far?"
Ivanov responded that collars for dogs and cats with satellite-guided positioning equipment will be available for private consumers in the middle of next year.

Salyut 1 was moved to a higher orbit between July and August 1971 to ensure that it would not be destroyed prematurely through orbital decay. In the meantime, Soyuz capsules were being substantially re-designed to allow pressure suits to be worn during launch, docking maneuvers, and re-entry.[6] However, Salyut 1 ran out of supplies before the Soyuz redesign effort was concluded, and it was decided to fire the engines for the last time on 11 October, to lower its orbit and ensure prompt destructive re-entry over the Pacific Ocean. After 175 days in space, the first real space station came to an end.

KAZAKSTAN: SPACE STATION: PROTON ROCKET LAUNCH: REACTION
Russian/Nat
XFA
Officials responsible for Wednesday's launch of the International Space Station service module from Kazakhstan have expressed relief that the Russian rocket carrying the module has successfully gone into orbit.
A NASA spokesman said the launch marked \"a very great day for the space programme of both the U-S and Russia.\"
The Russian director of the launch station where the Zvezda module blasted off on Wednesday shared that sentiment, and admitted to earlier fears that the international space station programme would have been put back years if anything went wrong.
At Mission Control outside Moscow, Russian and U-S space agency officials applauded as the module went into orbit, approximately 10 minutes after being launched at 0856 Moscow time (0456 GMT).
A live feed from the cosmodrome was being broadcast on console video screens at Mission Control, while a huge screen in front of the officials tracked the rocket's flight from the cosmodrome on the remote, wind-swept steppes of Kazakstan.
Russia and the United States have invested high hopes in the Zvezda module, which will be the core of the 16-nation space station project.
The module will contain flight controls, the sewage system and sleeping quarters for the crew.
Russia says that the 22-ton, 43-foot-long segment cost about 320 (m) million U-S dollars to build.
It has severely taxed Moscow's meagre financial resources and thrown the U-S-led space station project more than two years behind schedule, casting doubts on Russia's reliability as a major partner.
The launch could have come sooner if not for two crashes of Proton rockets over Kazakstan last year.
Russia insists problems with the rocket have been worked out, and it has put several satellites into orbit with the help of Proton rockets since the crashes.
The Zvezda module is going into orbit unmanned.
It is due to dock on July 26 by computer with two other space station components, Zarya and Unity, which were launched in 1998.
The first crew could go to the station by October this year.
Two cosmonauts will be prepared to immediately fly to Zvezda aboard a Soyuz rocket from Baikonur if the automatic linkup goes awry.
The International Space Station is still far from complete.
Dozens more modules have to be built, and the station is expected to be finished by 2005 at the earliest, with 46 more planned space launches.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
\"This is a key step in the International Space Station, I'm very excited to see it go so very well, everything appears to be going just fine as of right now. When we'll come over to the orbit we'll get more telemetery on the service module. I'm very excited, this a very great day for the space programme of both nations.\"
SUPER CAPTION: Robert Castle, NASA's Zvezda flight director
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
\"Of course we were afraid that things might go wrong today. Especially so since Zvezda is so unique, we don't have another one to replace this module if things were to go awry. If Zvezda were to fail today we would have been thrown years back in the building of the International Space Station.\"

Technicians pulled back the launch tower from the huge rocket about half an hour before the 8:56 a.m. liftoff.
A large logo advertising Pizza Hut had been placed about halfway up the rocket.
Russia and the United States have invested high hopes in the Zvezda module, which will be the core of the 16-nation space station project.
The module will contain flight controls, the sewage system and sleeping quarters for the
crew.
Russia says that the 22-ton, 43-foot-long segment cost about $320 million to build. It has severely taxed Moscow's meagre financial resources and thrown the U.S.-led space

station by October, NASA has said.
Two cosmonauts will be prepared to immediately launch to Zvezda aboard a Soyuz rocket if the automatic linkup goes wrong.
A failed launch would have been a major setback for the project and Russia's attempts to retain its image as a leading space power, which it gained by putting the first
satellite and the first man into space.
Delays on the Zvezda - which means «star» in Russian - have already cost the project an estimated $3 billion, and some members of the U.S. Congress are questioning whether
to fund NASA's spending projections on the $60 billion project, particularly after the failed launches of two Mars missions last year.
The United States has also been irritated by a Russian decision to keep the 14-year old Mir space station aloft.
A pair of cosmonauts returned in June from a successful two-month stint on the station, whose resiliency after hundreds of breakdowns and accidents gives Russian space
officials considerable pride.
The U.S. General Accounting office has accused Russia of failing to meet NASA safety standards in building Zvezda, saying the module's magnesium and aluminium skin may not
adequately protect against collisions with space junk and that equipment will fail if cabin pressure is lost.
Russia insists that Zvezda is reliable and that the ISS is a priority, and President Vladimir Putin has promised that the country will meet its commitments.
The Zvezda launch costs were partly defrayed by U.S. pizza chain Pizza Hut, which put a giant advertisement on the side of the Proton rocket.
The ad was not visible Tuesday, with the rocket mostly covered by scaffolding from the
launch tower.
The station is still nowhere near complete.

The U-S PanAmSat-10 communications satellite has been successfully launched by the Russian booster Proton-K.
The commercial launch went ahead as scheduled at 5.12 a-m (0112 GMT) on Tuesday from Kazakhstan's Baikonur cosmodrome with the help of specialists from Russia's Space Agency and Strategic Missile Forces.
At 5.22 a-m (0122 GMT) the satellite reached the basic orbit and the booster went down, the press service of Russia's Strategic Missile Forces said.
The engines of a smaller booster were then activated.
A number of pushes from these engines will lift the satellite first into preliminary orbit and then to the target elliptical orbit with a maximum altitude of just over 36-thousand kilometres.
The 3.733-tonne satellite was designed and built by Boeing Satellite Systems for the PanAmSat Corporation.
Its planned to keep the satellite in service for 15 years.
It will be used for television broadcasting and direct access to the Internet for private users in Europe, the Middle East and southern Africa.

STORYLINE

Technicians pulled back the launch tower from the huge rocket about half an hour before the 8:56 a.m.
It has severely taxed Moscow's meagre financial resources and thrown the U.S.-led space
station project more than two years behind schedule, casting doubts on Russia's reliability as a major partner.
The launch could have come sooner if not for two crashes of Proton rockets.
Russia insisted problems with the rocket have been worked out, and it has put several satellites into orbit with the help of Proton rockets since the
crashes.
The Zvezda module will go into orbit unmanned, docking July 26 by computer with two other space station componen hat were launched in 1998. The first crew could go to the
station by October, NASA has said.
Dozens more modules have to be built, and the station is expected to be finished by 2005 at the earliest, with 46 more planned space launches.
