En los últimos años del reinado de Carlos III, el 30 de mayo de 1785 se encarga a Juan de Villanueva el proyecto del Gabinete de Ciencias de Historia natural y Academia de Ciencias, obra impulsada por el conde de Floridablanca y que actualmente alberga el Museo del Prado.
El edificio se concibe como tres cuerpos o edificios autónomos, pensados con total independencia de uso e incluso de imagen al exterior, cada uno de ellos con accesos diferenciados.
Al espacio central se accede a través de un pórtico hexástilo, de columnas toscanas, con un riguroso entablamento y una pronunciada cornisa, rematada con un ático cuadrangular. Ante este pórtico se levanta la estatua de Velázquez que da nombre a la puerta.
El espacio central se une con los volúmenes cúbicos de los extremos a través de dos alas longitudinales, integrando así de manera acertada cinco células diferenciadas e independientes.
El pabellón norte se organiza en torno a una rotonda cobijada alrededor de una estructura cuadrada. La fachada se resuelve con un pórtico jónico in antis que sostiene un entablamento. Esta fachada corresponde a la segunda planta del edificio, al quedar la primera originalmente bajo el desnivel del terreno, accediéndose a través de una rampa. Al allanarse el nivel del suelo hasta el suelo real de edificio, se ha construido una escalinata para acceder a la primitiva puerta, desfigurándose la concepción original de Villanueva. Al levantarse una estatua de Goya enfrente de este acceso recibe el nombre del famoso pintor aragonés.
El pabellón sur es palaciego, empleando el orden corintio y apreciándose una clara influencia italianizante, articulándose en torno a un patio cuadrado y una estructura circular que hoy alberga una de las obras más famosas de la pinacoteca: la Familia de Carlos IV de Goya. La fachada sur presenta dos plantas: en la inferior se encuentra una gran puerta de acceso constituida por un vano adintelado mientras que la superior está constituida por una logia configurada por seis columnas de orden corintio que sostienen un entablamento.
Las amplias salas centrales del edificio son abovedadas, destacando la rotonda norte constituida por ocho columnas de orden dórico y cubierta con bóveda de casetones.
Al exterior, el edificio presenta dos plantas, mostrando en las alas longitudinales una logia adintelada en la superior y una arquería ciega en la inferior, alternando los arcos con hornacinas cuadrangulares en las que se ubican grandes maceteros y estatuas. Sobre estas hornacinas se encuentran medallones con las efigies de importantes escultores, pintores y arquitectos hispanos.
Una de las características definitivas de esta construcción es la alternancia entre piedra y ladrillo, que se convertirá en una constante de la arquitectura de Villanueva y en una significativa influencia en la madrileña arquitectura contemporánea. --

Museo del Prado
The Prado museum in Madrid is THE most important attraction of the city. And one of the best art museums in the world. Its collection of mix sixteenth century to mid eighteenth century Spanish painters is fantastic. With Velasquez and Goya as must sees among the masterpieces of this museum.
So here I am right next to Velazquez. He was the favourite painter of King Phillippe IV. And his masterpiece, Las Manina is one of the most visited works in the Prado museum in Madrid.

The Museo del Prado is the main Spanish national art museum, located in central Madrid. It features one of the world's finest collections of European art, from the 12th century to the early 19th century, based on the former Spanish Royal Collection, and unquestionably the best single collection of Spanish art. Founded as a museum of paintings and sculpture, it also contains important collections of other types of works. A new, recently opened wing enlarged the display area by about 400 paintings, and it is currently used mainly for temporary expositions. El Prado is one of the most visited sites in the world, and it is considered to be among the greatest museums of art. The large numbers of works by Velázquez and Francisco de Goya (the artist more extensively represented in the collection), Titian, Rubens and Bosch are among the highlights of the collection.
The collection currently comprises around 7,600 paintings, 1,000 sculptures, 4,800 prints and 8,200 drawings, in addition to a large number of other works of art and historic documents. By 2012 the Museum will be displaying about 1300 works in the main buildings, while around 3,100 works are on temporary loan to various museums and official institutions. The remainder are in storage.

Vincent Leonard Price, Jr. (May 27, 1911 – October 25, 1993) was an American actor, well known for his distinctive voice and serio-comic performances in a series of horror films made in the latter part of his career.
Price was born in St. Louis, Missouri, the son of Marguerite Cobb (née Wilcox) and Vincent Leonard Price, Sr., who was the president of the National Candy Company. His grandfather, Vincent Clarence Price, invented "Dr. Price's Baking Powder," the first cream of tartar baking powder, and secured the family's fortune.
Price attended St. Louis Country Day School. He was further educated at Yale in art history and fine art. He was a member of the Courtauld Institute, London. He became interested in the theatre during the 1930s, appearing professionally on stage for the first time in 1935.
He made his film debut in 1938 with Service de Luxe and established himself in the film Laura (1944), opposite Gene Tierney, directed by Otto Preminger. He also played Joseph Smith, Jr. in the movie Brigham Young (1940) and William Gibbs McAdoo in Wilson (1944) as well as a pretentious priest in The Keys of the Kingdom (1944).

En los últimos años del reinado de Carlos III, el 30 de mayo de 1785 se encarga a Juan de Villanueva el proyecto del Gabinete de Ciencias de Historia natural y Academia de Ciencias, obra impulsada por el conde de Floridablanca y que actualmente alberga el Museo del Prado.
El edificio se concibe como tres cuerpos o edificios autónomos, pensados con total independencia de uso e incluso de imagen al exterior, cada uno de ellos con accesos diferenciados.
Al espacio central se accede a través de un pórtico hexástilo, de columnas toscanas, con un riguroso entablamento y una pronunciada cornisa, rematada con un ático cuadrangular. Ante este pórtico se levanta la estatua de Velázquez que da nombre a la puerta.
El espacio central se une con los volúmenes cúbicos de los extremos a través de dos alas longitudinales, integrando así de manera acertada cinco células diferenciadas e independientes.
El pabellón norte se organiza en torno a una rotonda cobijada alrededor de una estructura cuadrada. La fachada se resuelve con un pórtico jónico in antis que sostiene un entablamento. Esta fachada corresponde a la segunda planta del edificio, al quedar la primera originalmente bajo el desnivel del terreno, accediéndose a través de una rampa. Al allanarse el nivel del suelo hasta el suelo real de edificio, se ha construido una escalinata para acceder a la primitiva puerta, desfigurándose la concepción original de Villanueva. Al levantarse una estatua de Goya enfrente de este acceso recibe el nombre del famoso pintor aragonés.
El pabellón sur es palaciego, empleando el orden corintio y apreciándose una clara influencia italianizante, articulándose en torno a un patio cuadrado y una estructura circular que hoy alberga una de las obras más famosas de la pinacoteca: la Familia de Carlos IV de Goya. La fachada sur presenta dos plantas: en la inferior se encuentra una gran puerta de acceso constituida por un vano adintelado mientras que la superior está constituida por una logia configurada por seis columnas de orden corintio que sostienen un entablamento.
Las amplias salas centrales del edificio son abovedadas, destacando la rotonda norte constituida por ocho columnas de orden dórico y cubierta con bóveda de casetones.
Al exterior, el edificio presenta dos plantas, mostrando en las alas longitudinales una logia adintelada en la superior y una arquería ciega en la inferior, alternando los arcos con hornacinas cuadrangulares en las que se ubican grandes maceteros y estatuas. Sobre estas hornacinas se encuentran medallones con las efigies de importantes escultores, pintores y arquitectos hispanos.
Una de las características definitivas de esta construcción es la alternancia entre piedra y ladrillo, que se convertirá en una constante de la arquitectura de Villanueva y en una significativa influencia en la madrileña arquitectura contemporánea. --

Al levantarse una estatua de Goya enfrente de este acceso recibe el nombre del famoso pintor aragonés.
El pabellón sur es palaciego, empleando el orden corintio y apreciándose una clara influencia italianizante, articulándose en torno a un patio cuadrado y una estructura circular que hoy alberga una de las obras más famosas de la pinacoteca: la Familia de Carlos IV de Goya. La fachada sur presenta dos plantas: en la inferior se encuentra una gran puerta de acceso constituida por un vano adintelado mientras que la superior está constituida por una logia configurada por seis columnas de orden corintio que sostienen un entablamento.
Las amplias salas centrales del edificio son abovedadas, destacando la rotonda norte constituida por ocho columnas de orden dórico y cubierta con bóveda de casetones.
Al exterior, el edificio presenta dos plantas, mostrando en las alas longitudinales una logia adintelada en la superior y una arquería ciega en la inferior, alternando los arcos con hornacinas cuadrangulares en las que se ubican grandes maceteros y estatuas. Sobre estas hornacinas se encuentran medallones con las efigies de importantes escultores, pintores y arquitectos hispanos.
Una de las características definitivas de esta construcción es la alternancia entre piedra y ladrillo, que se convertirá en una constante de la arquitectura de Villanueva y en una significativa influencia en la madrileña arquitectura contemporánea. --

The Prado museum in Madrid is THE most important attraction of the city. And one of the best art museums in the world. Its collection of mix sixteenth century to mid eighteenth century Spanish painters is fantastic. With Velasquez and Goya as must sees among the masterpieces of this museum.
So here I am right next to Velazquez. He was the favourite painter of King Phillippe IV. And his masterpiece, Las Manina is one of the most visited works in the Prado museum in Madrid.

And pay attention to the doors: they stand out because they are made of bronze.

We didn't know that behind the black background that was painted all around the figure of Mona Lisa, it hid what is, in fact, a very well preserved landscape, very close to the one in the Louvre original. STORYLINE:
The "Spanish" Mona Lisa was re-introduced to the public on Tuesday, after major restoration work renewed interest in the copy owned by Madrid's Prado museum.
The copy of the famous La Gioconda painting by Leonardo da Vinci had been part of the Prado collection for years and was displayed occasionally.
But no one paid much attention to it because around the sitter in the painting was a stark black background, not the pretty landscape seen in the original.
Two years ago, tests were done as part of efforts to get the copy ready for a da Vinci exhibit later this year in Paris, where the original hangs in the Louvre.
This gave restorers at the Prado a hint that something was hidden under the black coat, which was added in the 18th century for reasons not fully understood.
When the black covering was removed, a Tuscan landscape very similar to the one in the original emerged.
X-ray tests allowed experts to peek under the painting's surface to see how it developed as it was composed.
They showed that changes made in the copy were similar to changes made to the original as it evolved.
Varnish was also removed from the face of the Prado Mona Lisa, making it look brighter and younger than the face coated with cracked, darkish varnish at the Louvre.
Besides the black background, one other difference from the original is the woman in the copy has eyebrows and the Mona Lisa in the real masterpiece does not.
Prado museum officials said their best guess was that their copy was done by a da Vinci apprentice named Francesco Melzi, because of the style observed in it.
The Louvre supports the Prado's new evaluation of the painting.
There are dozens of the surviving replicas of the masterpiece from the 16th and 17th centuries.
But the Prado museum says their copy of La Gioconda will give art lovers and experts a true idea of what the Mona Lisa looked like back in the 16th century.

We were beyond excited to come and visit Madrid, after all this is a city renowned for its arts, cuisine, and nightlife. With 10 days to spare, we decided to hit up some of the best sights and attractions and film a guide highlighting "25 things to do in Madrid". In this video you can expect everything from lively markets and world renowned museums, to beautiful gardens and Spanish dishes.

Hola y bienvenidos a Madrid. This week we are in the Spanish capital and we are going to show you twenty five of the best things to do in the city.
Final thoughts on your time in Madrid. Well, I really enjoyed the city. And I really found that it is super walk-able. We were here for 10 days and we hardly had to take the metro at all. We just took the bus once when we were visiting the stadium but the rest of the time we were able to walk wherever we needed to go. And also I think it is a great city for art lovers. There are so many galleries and museums to check out. And a lot of them are free in the evening. So keep that in mind.
And now it is your turn. What did you think of Madrid? You know what? I absolutely loved Madrid. It is a city that just really clicked with me. We have a lot of friends that are living here long term and prior to coming here I had no idea like why would someone want to come to Madrid? Now I totally get it. I love the culture, I love the food, I love the nightlife. Everything is really cheap. I go to the grocery store and I can get a one liter thing of wine for just over a Euro. It is just a really affordable fun city to be in. And it is somewhere I hope I have a chance to come back to again soon.

The Prado Museum (founded in 1819) is among Europe's greatest art galleries. Within its 4,000-strong collection of 16th- to early 19th-century paintings, are masterpieces by Fra Angelico, Botticelli, Bosch (El Bosco), Titian, Rembrandt and Velázquez, as well as evidence of the astonishing development of Goya - from his sun-soaked early paintings of dances and festivities to the grim madness of his black period.

Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (Reina Sofia National Art Centre Museum)
Housed in a former hospital built by Francesco Sabatini for Carlos III in the late 18th century, the museum was designed by the Spanish architect Antonio Fernánez Alba in 1977 and completed in 1990. Officially opened by the King and Queen in 1992, it is dedicated to Spanish 20th-century art, pride of place belonging to Picasso's disturbing Civil War canvas, Guernica . Dalí, Miró and Juan Gris are among the other artists on show. More recently the museum has expanded with a building created by the French architect Jean Nouvel. The expansion houses the museum's library, a 450-seat auditorium and temporary exhibitions galleries.
Opening Times: Mon-Sat 1000-2100, Sun 1000-1430.
Admission Fees: Yes (except free on Saturdays between 1430-1900 and Sundays).

The collection contains over 800 paintings, sculptures, carvings and tapestries, ranging from primitive Flemish works to contemporary pieces. Highlights include works by Fra Angelico, Van Eyck, Dürer, Caravaggio and Rubens.

El Triángulo del Arte en Madrid lo conforman estas tres ubicaciones: Museo del Prado, Reina Sofía y Thyssen.
Museo del Prado
En la Milla de Oro de Madrid, la joya de la Corona, sigue siendo el Museo del Prado, un lugar en el que Eugenio d'Ors pasó tres horas (y lo contó en un libro). No es tiempo suficiente para descubrir todos sus tesoros. En su sanctasanctórum, la Sala XII, cuelga «Las Meninas», mucho más que un cuadro. El Prado es la Casa de Velázquez y en ella habitan sus obras maestras: «Las Lanzas», «Las Hilanderas»...
Pero el maestro sevillano se halla en la mejor compañía: Goya (el «Retrato de la Familia de Carlos IV», las «Majas», «Los fusilamientos del 3 de mayo», las pinturas negras...), Tiziano («Carlos V a caballo en Mühlberg»), El Bosco («El Jardín de las delicias»), Van der Weyden («El descendimiento»), El Greco («El caballero de la mano en el pecho»), Rubens («Las tres Gracias»), Fra Angelico («La Anunciación»), Durero («Adán y Eva»), Rafael («El cardenal»), Tintoretto («El Lavatorio»), Antonello da Messina («Cristo muerto sostenido por un ángel»)...
Museo Reina Sofía
A ambos lados del Triángulo del Arte en Madrid se ubican el museo Reina Sofía y el museo Thyssen.
El museo Reina Sofía va mudando poco a poco su piel. Su sede habitual (antiguo Hospital de San Carlos) fue ampliada por Jean Nouvel en 2005. Un proyecto que, pese a costar 92 millones de euros, no termino de convencer por romper con la estética neoclásica del edificio.
Aunque es un museo joven (se inauguró como museo nacional en 1992, pero ya en 1886 funcionaba como centro de arte), se ha consolidado como uno de los grandes museos de arte moderno y contemporáneo del mundo. Su bandera, el «Guernica» (el deseado) de Picasso, que llegó a España en 1981 (se expuso en el Casón) y desde 1992 cuelga en el Reina Sofía.
Hay largas colas a diario ante el museo para admirar la gran antológica que le dedica a uno de sus puntales. Y es que Picasso, Dalí, Gris y Miró son un póquer ganador. De estos cuatro artistas el museo atesora importantes colecciones. Cabe destacar obras como «El gran masturbador», de Dalí; «Mujer en azul», de Picasso, y las tres mejores esculturas del malagueño: «El hombre del cordero», «Mujer en el jardín» y «La dama oferente».
El Reina Sofía ultima la reordenación de sus colecciones. La fotografía y el cine se han hecho un hueco importante. Con un recorte en su presupuesto público de un 25% este año, el Reina Sofía se ha convertido, al igual que el Prado, en ente público y ha creado una fundación en la que hay importantes coleccionistas. El museo cuenta con otras sedes para exposiciones temporales (los Palacios de Velázquez y Cristal del Retiro). Ha recibido importantes donaciones (como el archivo Capa de la Guerra Civil española) y préstamos (colección Phelps de Cisneros).
Queda para la historia la pérdida de una relevante pieza de su colección: una escultura de Richard Serra de 38 toneladas, «Equal-Parallel/Guernica-Bengasi». Se le perdió la pista en unos almacenes de Arganda del Rey. El artista la rehízo y hoy se exhibe, resucitada, en una de sus salas.
Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza
En 1992 se inaugura el Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, con el préstamo de 775 obras de la colección del barón Thyssen, una de las mejores colecciones privadas del mundo. Un año después la adquiere el Estado por 350 millones de dólares (estaba valorada entre 1.000 y 1.500 millones) en una operación en la que su esposa, Carmen Cervera, jugó un papel decisivo.
La baronesa cedió al Estado unas 240 obras de su colección durante 11 años, de forma gratuita. Préstamo que se ha renovado ya tres años más. Sigue siendo una incógnita el futuro de la colección, que cuenta con tesoros como «Mata Mua», de Gauguin. Con la pérdida del patrocinio de Caja Madrid, el Thyssen busca, al igual que el Prado y el Reina Sofía, cómo atrapar a poderosos empresarios, que están entrando en sus Patronatos.

Pero el maestro sevillano se halla en la mejor compañía: Goya (el «Retrato de la Familia de Carlos IV», las «Majas», «Los fusilamientos del 3 de mayo», las pinturas negras...), Tiziano («Carlos V a caballo en Mühlberg»), El Bosco («El Jardín de las delicias»), Van der Weyden («El descendimiento»), El Greco («El caballero de la mano en el pecho»), Rubens («Las tres Gracias»), Fra Angelico («La Anunciación»), Durero («Adán y Eva»), Rafael («El cardenal»), Tintoretto («El Lavatorio»), Antonello da Messina («Cristo muerto sostenido por un ángel»)...
Museo Reina Sofía
A ambos lados del Triángulo del Arte en Madrid se ubican el museo Reina Sofía y el museo Thyssen.
El museo Reina Sofía va mudando poco a poco su piel. Su sede habitual (antiguo Hospital de San Carlos) fue ampliada por Jean Nouvel en 2005. Un proyecto que, pese a costar 92 millones de euros, no termino de convencer por romper con la estética neoclásica del edificio.
Aunque es un museo joven (se inauguró como museo nacional en 1992, pero ya en 1886 funcionaba como centro de arte), se ha consolidado como uno de los grandes museos de arte moderno y contemporáneo del mundo. Su bandera, el «Guernica» (el deseado) de Picasso, que llegó a España en 1981 (se expuso en el Casón) y desde 1992 cuelga en el Reina Sofía.
Hay largas colas a diario ante el museo para admirar la gran antológica que le dedica a uno de sus puntales. Y es que Picasso, Dalí, Gris y Miró son un póquer ganador. De estos cuatro artistas el museo atesora importantes colecciones. Cabe destacar obras como «El gran masturbador», de Dalí; «Mujer en azul», de Picasso, y las tres mejores esculturas del malagueño: «El hombre del cordero», «Mujer en el jardín» y «La dama oferente».
El Reina Sofía ultima la reordenación de sus colecciones. La fotografía y el cine se han hecho un hueco importante. Con un recorte en su presupuesto público de un 25% este año, el Reina Sofía se ha convertido, al igual que el Prado, en ente público y ha creado una fundación en la que hay importantes coleccionistas. El museo cuenta con otras sedes para exposiciones temporales (los Palacios de Velázquez y Cristal del Retiro). Ha recibido importantes donaciones (como el archivo Capa de la Guerra Civil española) y préstamos (colección Phelps de Cisneros).
Queda para la historia la pérdida de una relevante pieza de su colección: una escultura de Richard Serra de 38 toneladas, «Equal-Parallel/Guernica-Bengasi». Se le perdió la pista en unos almacenes de Arganda del Rey. El artista la rehízo y hoy se exhibe, resucitada, en una de sus salas.
Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza
En 1992 se inaugura el Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, con el préstamo de 775 obras de la colección del barón Thyssen, una de las mejores colecciones privadas del mundo. Un año después la adquiere el Estado por 350 millones de dólares (estaba valorada entre 1.000 y 1.500 millones) en una operación en la que su esposa, Carmen Cervera, jugó un papel decisivo.
La baronesa cedió al Estado unas 240 obras de su colección durante 11 años, de forma gratuita. Préstamo que se ha renovado ya tres años más. Sigue siendo una incógnita el futuro de la colección, que cuenta con tesoros como «Mata Mua», de Gauguin. Con la pérdida del patrocinio de Caja Madrid, el Thyssen busca, al igual que el Prado y el Reina Sofía, cómo atrapar a poderosos empresarios, que están entrando en sus Patronatos.

Vic exploring Madrid-Part 2/2
Continuing to explore Madrid I walked past the famous Prado Museum what ever it is famous for lol and went further southbound through the incredible noisy traffic. It was already time for eating so after stopping by at another hotel to pick up something I started to look for a place to eat. Turned out not to be that easy because places around the area I was at are all tourist traps and their prices are astronomically high. After all I found a place to feed and in the meantime it already got dark outside so I walked back to the hotel, however the day just had begun here and I was ready for some night life. -

Jose Rafael Moneo is the first Josep Lluis Sert Professor of Architecture. He was chairman of the Department of Architecture from 1985 until 1990 and teaches the lecture courses On Contemporary Architecture, and Design Theories in Architecture. Before joining the School of Design, Moneo was a fellow at the Spanish Academy in Rome and taught in Barcelona and Madrid. His scholarly work includes numerous articles and lectures published throughout the world. Francesco Jodice's insights into his two video works that accompany 'Portrait of Spain: Masterpieces from the Prado'.
To complement 'Portrait of Spain' the Gallery presents two contemporary video works commissioned by the Prado, by Italian artist Francesco Jodice, that pay tribute to the visitors of the Prado.
In 'The Prado by Francesco Jodice' 2011 a moving 'human atlas' of the museum's visitors is presented, registering the relationship between the vast cultural heritage of the Prado's collections and its audiences.
Video Installation
'Spectaculum Spectatoris' 2011 presents a group portrait of the community that experiences the Prado. The five, synchronised projections show portraits of hundreds of visitors, constructing a record of their interaction with the works of art. Representing the Prado's human landscape, this installation avoids placing the work of art at its centre; rather, the viewer becomes a work of art.
Film
The second part of the work, a short film Prado, reflects the everyday relationship between visitors to the Prado and its collection. Jodice 'fuses' the visitor with the work of art, showing mobile portraits (couples, families, students) in dialogue with the Prado's collection, and once again making the spectator rather than the work of art the protagonist.

On Thursday, May 17, 2012, the Old North Church hosted a three part public lecture, "The Paul Revere Mall: History, Art and Community".
In the first part of the lecture, shown in this video, David A. Kubiak presents "The Prado: It's History, and Future." Kubiak is a longtime North End resident and represents the North End/ Waterfront Residents' Association Parks and Open Spaces Committee. His talk focused on the history, vision and landscape design of the Paul Revere Mall, called "The Prado" by the local community. Introducing the lecture was Rev. Stephen T. Ayres, Vicar of the Old North Church and member of the Friends of the Prado.
Other video posts will highlight the lectures by Rebecca Reynolds, American Art Curator presenting "Arrested Motion: Cyrus Dallin's Statue of Paul Revere" and Alex Goldfeld, North End Historical Society President, presenting "The Pride of Later Generations: North End History Remembered in the Prado."
This lecture follows a successful April 29, 2012 outdoor celebration. The two events are intended to raise a new consciousness about the importance of the Paul Revere Mall for its historical, public and community value. The event sponsors are actively promoting investment in the Mall in order to restore the physical integrity of the space to Shurcliff's original design and to see a revitalization of the park as both a historical monument and a beautiful open space for neighborhood and visitor gathering and reflection.

Continuing to explore Madrid I walked past the famous Prado Museum what ever it is famous for lol and went further southbound through the incredible noisy traffic. It was already time for eating so after stopping by at another hotel to pick up something I started to look for a place to eat.
Turned out not to be that easy because places around the area I was at are all tourist traps and their prices are astronomically high.
After all I found a place to feed and in the meantime it already got dark outside so I walked back to the hotel, however the day just had begun here and I was ready for some night life.

Jose Rafael Moneo is the first Josep Lluis Sert Professor of Architecture. He was chairman of the Department of Architecture from 1985 until 1990 and teaches the lecture courses On Contemporary Architecture, and Design Theories in Architecture.
Before joining the School of Design, Moneo was a fellow at the Spanish Academy in Rome and taught in Barcelona and Madrid. His scholarly work includes numerous articles and lectures published throughout the world. His projects include the Bankinter Building in Madrid, the Museum of Roman Art in Merida, the L'Illa building in Barcelona, the Pilar and Joan Miro Museum in Palma de Mallorca, the "Kursaal" Auditorium and Congess Center in San Sebastian, the extension of the Prado Museum in Madrid, as well as the Davis Art Museum at Wellesley College, the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, and the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles. Moneo has been awarded the Gold Medal by the Spanish government, the Arnold W. Brunner Memorial Prize by the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Prince of Viana Prize (Spain), the Swedish Schock Price for the Visual Arts and the Royal Institute of British Architects Gold Medal.
