In this e-lecture, I discuss Ferguson's classical article called "Diglossia" published in 1959. I define what is Diglossia. Then I go through its main features as introduced in his article: namely: *Function *Prestige *Literary heritage *Acquisition *Standardization *Stability *Grammar *Lexicon *Phonology Then I go through Fishman's "Extended Diglossia". Finally I present the versions onto which diglossia can develop according to some sociolinguists. These are Triglossia (Mkifili, 1978) (Youssi, 1995) and Poliglossia (Platt, 1977).

In linguistics, diglossia (/daɪˈɡlɒsiə/; Greek: διγλωσσία less than δι- prefix denoting two, from δίς, twice + γλῶσσα, language + -ία, suffix denoting state or attribute, "speaking two languages") refers to a situation in which two dialects or usually closely related languages are used by a single language community. In addition to the community's everyday or vernacular language variety (labelled "L" or "low" variety), a second, highly codified variety (labelled "H" or "high") is used in certain situations such as literature, formal education, or other specific settings, but not used for ordinary conversation. The high variety may be an older stage of the same language (e.g. Latin in the early Middle Ages), or a distinct yet closely related present day dialect (e.g. Norwegian with Bokmål and Nynorsk, or Chinese with Mandarin as the official, literary standard and colloquial topolects/dialects used in everyday communication). Other examples include literary Katharevousa versus spoken Demotic Greek, Indonesian, with its Baku and Gaul forms, and the Dravidian language Tamil of southern India and Telugu with their respective high and low registers. Your rhythm echoes as I read the silence in-between your and my words. Our double kiss casts a circular shadow on everything we touch, splitting in two people’s minds and hearts. The world beats us thin, to almost transparent, mirroring with each other and the time without a beginning or an end. Love me to break away from the past, To create a new self, To draw a line, To cut the time into two halves, so we no longer know who is you, me, and who is us. Scald me with your light, write over and over new scars, the day will set them free. You are with me, even in the darkest night , piece by piece recreated by the stars. Take my hopes and I’ll let take you to the limit of our kneading, till we don’t know who is the broken-hearted and who is the sky’s king. Fulfilling an old promise of fidelity, we empty ourselves into the silver lining in-between the clouds. We splinter time and space, committing a sin with the oceans and the bays.
