A leap year (or intercalary or bissextile year) is a year containing one additional day (or, in the case of lunisolar calendars, a month) in order to keep the calendar year synchronized with the astronomical or seasonal year. Because seasons and astronomical events do not repeat in a whole number of days, a calendar that had the same number of days in each year would, over time, drift with respect to the event it was supposed to track. By occasionally inserting (or intercalating) an additional day or month into the year, the drift can be corrected. A year that is not a leap year is called a common year.
For example, in the Gregorian calendar (a common solar calendar), February in a leap year has 29 days instead of the usual 28, so the year lasts 366 days instead of the usual 365. Similarly, in the Hebrew calendar (a lunisolar calendar), Adar Aleph, a 13th lunar month is added seven times every 19 years to the twelve lunar months in its common years to keep its calendar year from drifting through the seasons too rapidly.

As the group of first graders from Chicago's Public Peter Reinberg School practiced writing about their futures, their teacher pacing the room, a new kind of helper could be spotted -- wearing bright pink -- among the children. Ingrid, a Parent Mentor Coordinator for the Northwest Side Housing Center's (NWSHC) Parent Mentor Program walked students through the morning writing exercise.
"It has always been my dream to become a teacher ever since I can remember," Ingrid said.
Ingrid was a parent mentor in the classroom last year, and was hired on as a coordinator by the NWSHC in the fall. She said that initially she thought it would be just a fun way to spend some time in her daughter's school, learning from students and teachers. But through her work as the Parent Mentor Coordinator, Ingrid drew attention from the principal of the school.
Ingrid was recently hired by the school to provide aid to students with special needs.
"I thought it was just a fun experience, but now it feels surreal," she said. "Now I'm actually coming in here, I'm part of the staff."
Ingrid will continue as the Parent Mentor Coordinator while holding her new position in the school.
"It definitely is my dream starting to come true," she said.

In a statement issued on Wednesday after its executive board reviewed consultations held late last year, the IMF said Egypt's economy is starting to make a turnaround despite its current difficulties following years of instability.
It also confirmed its forecast of 3.8 percent growth for the current fiscal year, which ends on June 30, compared to 2.2 percent in the previous period.
The IMF says that as Egyptian "authorities implement policy initiatives, prospects for growth, employment, and macroeconomic stability will improve."

We begin at the nation′s top office.
With her approval ratings hitting an all-time low, President Park Geun-hye has promised to reshuffle her office to turn over a new leaf.
The president says the shake-up will help the government better carry out her economic reform plans.
Choi You-sun starts us off.
President Park Geun-hye says she will soon reshuffle her staff and Cabinet to sharpen her focus on revitalizing the economy in the new year.
"By partially reorganizing the presidential office, I hope to increase efficiency in my administration and turn over a new leaf. I′m also thinking about a minor Cabinet reshuffle, including filling the vacant seat of the oceans minister to start fresh."
At Tuesday′s Cabinet meeting, she also talked about appointing special advisers who would consult with political parties in enforcing her three-year economic innovation plan of spurring growth through reforms and streamlining red tape.
President Park then reiterated what she said at her New Year′s press conference: that this year will offer the Korean economy a final chance to recover and make a leap forward.
The president is thought to be speeding up personnel reforms after her approval ratings hit an all-time low of 35 percent amid public criticism over disorder within the administration surrounding documents leaked from her office.
The reshuffle is widely expected to occur before the Lunar New Year holiday next month.
Before starting Tuesday′s Cabinet meeting, President Park, in an attempt to contain criticism about her lack of communication with officials, had a brief but formal tea time with the Cabinet for the first time since she took office two years ago.

The presidential office of Cheong Wa Dae says the meeting will include the leaders,... floor leaders... and policy committee chiefs of both parties.
President Park is expected to press them for prompt passage of her government′s economic revitalization bills,... and for next year′s budget bill.
This will be the president′s second meeting with both party leaders since September of last year... and her first with the floor leaders since July.

Speaking of talks,... there are growing questions about whether North and South Korea will hold high-level talks in the coming days as scheduled.
This, after South Korean activists flew anti-Pyongyang leaflets across the border... over the weekend.
Attention now shifts to the reaction out of Pyongyang, which had repeatedly warned... of grave consequences for such actions.
Choi You-sun has more.
Despite strong resistance from progressive civic groups in Seoul and South Korean businesses at the inter-Korean Kaesong Industrial Complex, conservative activists in the South sent some 20-thousand anti-North Korea leaflets across the border late Saturday.
"We have decided to openly send the leaflets to show the public that brutality and violence cannot stop the dissemination of truth."
While Pyongyang hasn′t yet reacted to the latest leaflet launch, it had warned of military action and significant damage to inter-Korean ties should the South Korean government fail to stop the activists.
Acknowledging the leaflets do nothing to improve inter-Korean relations, Seoul on Sunday reiterated its position that there are no legal grounds for stopping the launches, out of respect for the Constitutional value of freedom of expression.
A Unification Ministry official, however, added that the authorities have and will intervene if necess

For the rajputs, no sacrifice weighed more importance than freedom.
But despite this unprecedented courage, Mughal forces often dominated over the courageous Rajputs and it seemed the desires of these enemies would be fulfilled before long. In this troubled time, the soil of Mewar gave birth to its bravest son, Maharana Pratap who became an emblem for courage for the entire country. This is the story of a great warrior king, who in personal life is an ideal son to his father, a loving son to his step mother who hates him, a soothing leader to his people in their difficult times and trials. He is most surprisingly the man who only had love for his brothers, who in turn were either filled with jealousy, or hatred as they wanted themselves to be the rulers of Mewar. Many of these brothers went in the service of Akbar, but as history proves, his love would change his jealous brothers melodramatically in times of War.
The story of Maharana Pratap is not just the story of king who was a great warrior and who lead the army of his kingdom to victory against the armies of another empire. The story of Maharana Pratap is also not the story of a Rajput prince, who got his throne as a birthright from his father and ruled their state as a king in comfort. This story is actually the journey of a boy Pratap, who much later would earn his title Maharana, through his own deeds and dedication.

Hello.... and thanks for joining us. To our viewers around the world, it′s 6 a.m. on Wednesday, January twenty-first here in Seoul. I′m Mark Broome... and you′re tuned into Day Break. Title: President Park vows reshuffle to sharpen administration′s focus on economy We begin at the nation′s top office. With her approval ratings hitting an all-time low, President Park Geun-hye has promised to reshuffle her office to turn over a new leaf. The president says the shake-up will help the government better carry out her economic reform plans. Choi You-sun starts us off. President Park Geun-hye says she will soon reshuffle her staff and Cabinet to sharpen her focus on revitalizing the economy in the new year. "By partially reorganizing the presidential office, I hope to increase efficiency in my administration and turn over a new leaf. I′m also thinking about a minor Cabinet reshuffle, including filling the vacant seat of the oceans minister to start fresh." At Tuesday′s Cabinet meeting, she also talked about appointing special advisers who would consult with political parties in enforcing her three-year economic innovation plan of spurring growth through reforms and streamlining red tape. President Park then reiterated what she said at her New Year′s press conference: that this year will offer the Korean economy a final chance to recover and make a leap forward. The president is thought to be speeding up personnel reforms after her approval ratings hit an all-time low of 35 percent amid public criticism over disorder within the administration surrounding documents leaked from her office. The reshuffle is widely expected to occur before the Lunar New Year holiday next month. Before starting Tuesday′s Cabinet meeting, President Park, in an attempt to contain criticism about her lack of communication with officials, had a brief but formal tea time with the Cabinet for the first time since she took office two years ago. Ep 262 - Maharana Pratap - Unaware of Ajabde's marriage proposal Pratap reaches her room and decides to propose her for marriage. He gives her the rose and proposes her romantically. Ajabde, though overwhelmed, acts strong and tells him that her marriage has been already fixed to someone else. Stunned to hear this, Pratap gets angry and tells her it is he whom she will get married to. Meanwhile, Udai singh and Jayavanta makes excuses to leave but are stopped by Hansa and Mamrakh for the ceremony. Bhatiyani and Uma go to bring Ajabde to the pond which she has to cross by for the groom to see her reflection in the water. Pratap goes with Ajabde as he wants to meet the groom. As Ajabde crosses the pond she notices Pratap throwing a pebble into the water creating ripples. The groom is unable to see Ajabde's reflection. "Around 400 years back, with the might of their huge armies, foreign forces, one after another, were invading the Indian territories. Afghans, Turks and then the Mughals...all had one burning desire... establishing their control over a prosperous India. But even in these hard times, there was one province which gave a bold fight to these enemies… and that was the gleaming rajya of the Rajputs- Mewar! For the rajputs, no sacrifice weighed more importance than freedom. But despite this unprecedented courage, Mughal forces often dominated over the courageous Rajputs and it seemed the desires of these enemies would be fulfilled before long. In this troubled time, the soil of Mewar gave birth to its bravest son, Maharana Pratap who became an emblem for courage for the entire country. This is the story of a great warrior king, who in personal life is an ideal son to his father, a loving son to his step mother who hates him, a soothing leader to his people in their difficult times and trials. He is most surprisingly the man who only had love for his brothers, who in turn were either filled with jealousy, or hatred as they wanted themselves to be the rulers of Mewar. Many of these brothers went in the service of Akbar, but as history proves, his love would change his jealous brothers melodramatically in times of War. The story of Maharana Pratap is not just the story of king who was a great warrior and who lead the army of his kingdom to victory against the armies of another empire. The story of Maharana Pratap is also not the story of a Rajput prince, who got his throne as a birthright from his father and ruled their state as a king in comfort. Leap seconds help keep atomic time in sync with Earth's rotation; but also cause their own problems. Midnight will come later tonight as for the first time in three years an extra second is added to the official time set by atomic clocks. The "leap second" means the last minute of June will have 61 seconds in it. Leap seconds - and leap years - are added as basic ways to keep the clock in sync with the Earth and its seasons....
