Agrippa’s 3 Books by Edmund Welles
This multi-movement piece delves into the expressive and rhythmic extremes of the four bass clarinets and is primarily inspired by occult philosophy and heavy metal music. Each movement draws inspiration for form and content from some tangent connected to these topics. By focusing on the themes of duality and interconnectedness, the musical direction of each movement becomes generally a union of two genres, or at least abstractions of genres, in which the bass clarinet has been historically and conspicuously absent. With the dawn of the Single-Reed Conspiracy, this will no longer be the case.
II. The Black Lodge [swamp trance blues vs. uptempo swing blues]
FEAR & SUFFERING
The title is from a legend presented in the David Lynch/Mark Frost television series Twin Peaks.
“We each chose how to react: if the choice is fear, then we become vulnerable to darkness.…you may be fearless in this world, but there are other worlds….There is also a legend of a place called the Black Lodge, the shadow-self of the White Lodge. The legend says that every spirit must pass through there on the way to perfection. There, you will meet your own shadow-self. My people call it The Dweller on the Threshold. But it is said: if you confront the Black Lodge with imperfect courage, it will utterly annihilate your soul.”
“I think that the Black Lodge is what you have referred to in the past as ‘the evil in these woods.’ There’s a source of great power there . . .These night creatures that hover on the edge of our nightmares are drawn to us when we radiate fear.”
Whereas cause & effect is a basic illustration of duality, the doppelganger or shadow-self is an extreme example. The Self appearing in two opposing personages. Figuratively, we oppose ourselves almost constantly, and this may be born of Fear: Fear of death, fear of suffering. It is a logical progression from basic survival instincts and self-preservation. If we are to live beyond fear, we must face ourselves and the inherent fear and contradiction that dwells within us: the emotional manifestation of the inevitable transition from life to death. This subject has spawned a lot of dogma and theology, some of it less than illuminating; nevertheless, this conflict remains inexorable.
“Repetitions are magic keys.” (Eco, p. 376)
[...edited for space, more in the liner notes of the album from 2005 and the Companion release August 2015...]
The musical contrast of this movement is in the shift to the uptempo swing blues---this section is intended to be the most comfortable part of all four movements. It is a style with which most of us are intimately familiar since the basic 12-bar blues has been the backbone of rhythm & blues, swing, jazz, rock and popular music for just under a century now. The soloist is allowed the freedom of roving through familiar territory, but eventually the Unknown forces its way back in.
Three Books of Occult Philosophy
by Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa von Nettesheim (1531)
Seeking to categorize and explain all of the elements of the whole. Searching for mysteries and hidden truths. Exploiting the power of ideas, numbers, and harmonies. Bringing together disparate extremes and placing them in the same compendium. Dispensing Knowledge through creative expression and the ability of breath & air to move the soul.
“The single most important text in the history of Western occultism.” This is the prevailing description of Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa’s Three Books of Occult Philosophy. I discovered this work when exploring the simple & profound views of music held by occult philosophers in the Renaissance.
“Musical Harmony also is not destitute of the gifts of the stars; for it is a powerful imaginer of all things, which whilst it follows opportunely the celestial bodies, doth wonderfully allure the celestial influence, and doth change the affections, intentions, gestures, motions, actions and dispositions of all the hearers, and doth quietly allure them to its own properties, as to gladness, lamentation, to boldness, or rest, and the like; also it allures beasts, serpents, birds, dolphins to the hearing of its pleasant tunes.”

IIII. Asmodëus: The Destroyer, King of the Demons [death-metal ritual expedition & lamentation]
DEATH & PEACE
There is an apocryphal Fourth Book of Occult Philosophy not published with Agrippa’s original Three. “There are then, as we have said, four elements, without the perfect knowledge whereof we can effect nothing in magic, now each of them is threefold…” (Agrippa, Book I, Chapter IV). He attributes the following qualities to the number 4: “It is the foundation, the root of all other numbers, it signifies solidity, it makes up all Knowledge, the perpetual fountain of nature. It hath also great power in all mysteries….Hence that superexcellent, and great name of the divine trinity of God is written with four letters.” (Book II, Chapter VII)
Among the order of evil spirits listed in Agrippa’s Book Three, Asmodëus is named as the prince of the Fourth order, the Revengers of Evil. In the apocryphal Book of Tobit, he is named the Destroyer for killing seven husbands of Sarah (3:8). He was apparently birthed from King David and the succubus demon Igrat, and according to Jewish folklore, the title of King of the Demons came from Asmodëus usurping King Solomon’s throne for 40 years. Incidentally, King Solomon was at one time allegedly in possession of the ancient and elusive Delamelanicon.
Metal has reached a kind of zenith with the efforts of Black or Death Metal bands such as Bethlehem and Emperor who offer the usual thick distorted guitar sound, extremes of tempo, severe screaming vocals of dread and despair along with anomalous dynamic contrasts and surprisingly beautiful melodic lines. This movement is the most single-minded in its stylistic approach, and that style is this metal style. Even the very slow, lamenting sections are inspired from this music, which can be very theatrical in its way.
This movement leads directly into the Postlude.
Movement four (IIII) of Agrippa's 3 Books written for bass clarinet quartet by Cornelius Boots, commissioned by Chamber Music America.
This movement leads directly into the Postlude which can be heard here, with contras!! https://youtu.be/XjFUYdw6SIk

The Acts of the Apostles: Great Beasts, Which are Four
We will conclude our look of Acts 24-26 by looking at Paul's ultimate encounter he would face in Rome (Caesar) and how he foreshadows the real power behind Herod Agrippa II and the 3 Herods before him. Plus, amazingly, these 4 Herods in Scripture give us a glimpse into the counterfeit government coming under Anti-Christ (Herod a type). Recall that there are 4 beasts that will be the kings and priests in God's government, albeit they will differ in that they are "living creatures"!

Suzii Paynter at Wilshire: "Commission in the Context of Power"
We welcome to the Wilshire pulpit this morning Suzii Paynter, executive coordinator of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. Suzii is no stranger to Wilshire and is a friend to many in our congregation. Prior to joining CBF in March 2013, she served as director of the Texas Baptist Christian Life Commission and as director of the Advocacy Care Center at the Baptist General Convention of Texas. There, she directed public policy initiatives for state and federal issues and led international relief and development projects.
Over the past decade, Suzii has gained a national reputation for her advocacy on important ethical issues such as religious liberty, hunger and poverty, human trafficking, immigration reform and the environment. She has been recognized by numerous national religious and secular organizations such as the Sierra Club, American Association of Retired Persons and Samaritan Counseling Centers. In 2013, the Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty honored her with the J.M. Dawson Religious Liberty Award. In April 2014, she was invited to the White House, where she discussed immigration reform with President Obama and a small group of faith leaders in the Oval Office.
An ordained deacon and Sunday school teacher of more than 40 years, Suzii has held positions of leadership in Baptist churches in Texas, Kentucky and Mississippi. She has served these congregations alongside her husband, Roger Paynter, who recently retired from the senior pastorate of First Baptist Church of Austin.
CBF is a diverse community that includes nearly 1,800 congregations, thousands of individuals and dozens of partners all over the world. CBF supports a wide range of missions and ministries that give people meaningful opportunities to put their faith to action, including a network of 125 field personnel ministering in more than 30 countries as well as congregation-focused efforts to enhance the leadership of clergy and laity.
In today's sermon text, the Apostle Paul has been wrongly imprisoned for several years and finally gets to appeal to King Herod Agrippa II. He argues that his following of the way of Christ consists of fidelity to his Jewish Pharisee heritage, notably hope in the God who raises the dead. This strikes the procurator, Festus, as too much learning that is driving Paul insane. The logic of the resurrection challenges conventional reasoning that is meant to keep the powers in place, since it is ultimately about the reckoning of injustice in the name of mercy. The king is wise and sensitive enough to sense the truth in the gospel, although he does not himself become a Christian because of it. Faith is always endangered by the prospect of what we would have to give up in order to embrace it. When speaking the truth to power, we learn both to keep our message of justice and hope and at the same time appeal to the highest and noblest virtues of those in power.

Herod Agrippa II (AD 27/28 – ca. 92 or 100) officially named Marcus Julius Agrippa and sometimes just called Agrippa, was the seventh and last king of the family of Herod the Great, the Herodians. He was the son of the first and better-known Herod Agrippa, the brother of Berenice, Mariamne, and Drusilla (second wife of the Roman procurator Antonius Felix).
