The Muristan (from Persian Bimārestān بیمارستان meaning "hospital") is a complex of streets and shops in the Christian Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem. The site was the location of the first hospital of the Knights Hospitaller.
The area just south of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre has a long tradition dating to the days of Judas Maccabeus (the 2nd century BC) based on incidents recorded in the Second Book of Maccabees. According to the legend, King Antiochus V proceeded to Jerusalem to punish the High Priest for plundering David's Tomb. While on Golgotha, the king was directed in a divine vision to pardon the High Priest, and to build a hospital for the care of the sick and poor on that spot. In 1496, William Caoursin, Vice-Chancellor of the Hospitallers, wrote that Judas Maccabaeus and John Hyrcanus founded the hospital on that spot.
Old City may refer to:
The Church of the Holy Sepulchre (Latin: ecclesia Sancti Sepulchri; Hebrew: כנסיית הקבר הקדוש, Knesiyyat HaKever HaKadosh), also called the Church of the Resurrection i.e. Church of the Anastasis by Orthodox Christians (Arabic: كنيسة القيامة, kanīssat al Qi'yāma; Armenian: Սուրբ Յարութեան տաճար, Surb Harut’ian tačar; Greek: Ναός της Αναστάσεως, Naós tēs Anastáseōs), is a church within the Christian Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem. It is a few steps away from the Muristan.
The church contains, according to traditions dating back at least to the fourth century, the two holiest sites in Christendom: the site where Jesus of Nazareth was crucified, known as "Calvary" in Latin and "Golgotha" in Greek, and Jesus's empty tomb, where he is said to have been buried and resurrected. Within the church proper are the last four (or, by some definitions, five) Stations of the Via Dolorosa, representing the final episodes of Jesus' Passion. The church has been a major Christian pilgrimage destination since its creation in the fourth century, as the traditional site of the Resurrection of Christ, thus its original Greek name, Church of the Anastasis.
Jerusalem (/dʒəˈruːsələm/; Hebrew: יְרוּשָׁלַיִם Yerushaláyim pronounced [jeruˈʃalajim]; Arabic: القُدس al-Quds pronounced [ˈaːɫ ˈquːdsˤ]), located on a plateau in the Judean Mountains between the Mediterranean and the Dead Sea, is one of the oldest cities in the world. It is considered holy to the three major Abrahamic religions—Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Israelis and Palestinians both claim Jerusalem as their capital, as Israel maintains its primary governmental institutions there and the State of Palestine ultimately foresees it as its seat of power; however, neither claim is widely recognized internationally.
During its long history, Jerusalem has been destroyed at least twice, besieged 23 times, attacked 52 times, and captured and recaptured 44 times. The oldest part of the city was settled in the 4th millennium BCE. In 1538, walls were built around Jerusalem under Suleiman the Magnificent. Today those walls define the Old City, which has been traditionally divided into four quarters—known since the early 19th century as the Armenian, Christian, Jewish, and Muslim Quarters. The Old City became a World Heritage Site in 1981, and is on the List of World Heritage in Danger. Modern Jerusalem has grown far beyond the Old City's boundaries.

I have sent 17 of these cats for spay/neutering. Most of them were females, so one can imagine how many kittens would have suffered and died otherwise. I feed these cats lots of dry food every other day. Someone else gives them lots of chicken twice a week. We both now go at night, because the men who live and work there think that we are encouraging more cats to be there (when the opposite is true), and they harass us and curse us.

http://www.jfpenn.com/free In November 2016, I did a research trip to Israel for ARKANE thriller #9, End of Days. In this short video, walk with me through the Old City of Jerusalem. We enter through the Damascus Gate and walk through the souk, the Arab market, into the Church of Holy Sepulchre and then onto the roof where the Ethiopian Coptics have their section of the church. We descend into the 4th century cistern of St Helena, one of many cisterns under the city (and used in End of Days!) then we walk through the Jewish Quarter to the Western Wall. I've used these locations in a number of the ARKANE thrillers so it was awesome to be there in person. The first picture with the wild hair is on the Mount of Olives on a very windy day, looking towards the Old City. Read the book based on...

Today we are visiting the Church of the Visitation which marks the place were Mary, Mother of Jesus, had met her relative Elizabeth after the angel Gabriel revealed himself to Mary and told her she was pregnant with the son of God, and that also Elizabeth is expecting a baby -- later known as John the Baptist. Excited by the news of the two pregnancies, Mary hastened to her relative Elizabeth in Ein Kerem, which is located south west to Jerusalem and is also known as the city of Judah in the New Testament. According to Christian tradition, the site of the Church of the Visitation was a summer home where Elizabeth and her husband Zacharias resided so that Elizabeth could conceal her pregnancy with...

It is a few steps away from the Muristan. The entrance to the church is through a single door in the south transept. This narrow way of access to such a large structure has proven to be hazardous at times. For example, when a fire broke out in 1840, dozens of pilgrims were trampled to death. In 1999 the communities agreed to install a new exit door in the church, but there was never any report of this door being completed. The site is venerated as Golgotha,[1] (the Hill of Calvary), where Jes...
